SHTF Gear: Hybrid IWB Holster
I’ve carried everything from a 1911 to a full sized revolver to a j-frame, and am VERY picky about my carry “system”.
In my opinion, you will not have comfortable, secure carry without a well designed holster (specific to the weapon) and a dedicated “gun” belt (thick leather, 1.5” wide)
I only carry IWB, just behind the point of my hip, no matter the weapon. Pocket carry, for me, does not work, because I have tried “force-on-force” drills, and was never able to produce the weapon from pocket with enough speed to overcome the threat.
So, even a J-frame revolver (the king of pocket carry) gets IWB treatment if I am carrying one.
I have gone back to carrying one of my favorite carry revolvers of all time, the Ruger SP101 in Double Action Only, and wanted to give SHTF Gear a try.
Let me first say that my favorite all time holster, for any handgun, is from TT Gunleather. It is the “Mike’s Special” IWB. It carries low and with aggressive forward cant, two features that I insist upon for concealed carry. (I will be ordering a “Mikes Special” for this SP101)
The holster under review is the SHTF Gear, Ace1 Gen2 holster. That is a mouthful, but it’s basically a “hybrid” leather/kydex IWB holster.
The holster shipped to me within 4 business days, so that was the first thumbs up!!
The leather, hardware and kydex are all first class, and fit and finish are top notch.
I ordered the holster with leather belt loops as an add-on, as I hate those metal clips (tear up belts and a pain to put on).
This holster came with an allen wrench and a special Philips head tool, in order to change hardware and adjust for ride height an cant angle.
I installed the belt loops right away, and found that the ride height was PERFECT for the SP101.
The cylinder comes in line with my belt, which I have found to be the perfect ride height for a snub revolver.
The leather backing is pre-formed with a slight curve, which helps to find the right spot “just behind the hip” that I love so much, as it gives me the best combo of concealment and comfort (and perfect firing grip from the holster).
There is nothing to NOT like about this awesome holster, and if you are looking for a solid hybrid design for a revolver (or autoloader), give them a try.
