Default Holster Recommendation: N-Frame Pre-27 6 Inch

I am looking for a right handed belt holster (leather / lined) for my pre-27 "shooter". Something with a classic design that goes with the gun's age and era. I do not know much about holsters and would appreciate any suggestions. I am not a fan of the basket-weave style. I am looking for something to carry the gun while on the range.

I was hoping to get something lined to minimize wear and tear on the finish. This is no safe queen gun, but it is one of my favorites.

Thanks

Milt sparks cross draw. I don’t find strong side holsters comfortable for longer barreled revolvers.
I use this for 6” and 6.5” N-frames. El Paso Saddlery makes a nice on too.

Lining will not minimize wear. A properly fitted holster will do that. If the maker offers a one size fits all, pass. If it says we need make, model, barrel length, much better.

I like the Sunday Scabbard or Brill style of holster. Another one that works is the ThreePersons holster.

I've got several Triple-K holsters for my revolvers; they are basic, well-made, but not expensive and would do what you're looking for, protect your gun while at the range. They hold the gun in a forward cant when worn, like a law enforcement holster would, and has a thumb break retention strap.

This one is a # 196 Carrylite, made to hold a 6-1/2" barrel, although my long revolvers are 6". I use this one for my M27, M28, M57 and even my M25, although it is only a 4". I have another one for my K frame guns.

I use a Bianchi 111 Cyclone for my m29 6.5 inch. Solid construction and leather at $75-$80 and you can use it cross draw or strong side. I prefer cross draw for field carry with the longer barrel.

I really like the Sourdough Pancake holster made by Simply Rugged Holsters. It can be worn both strongside or cross draw. I find the cross draw more comfortable for a large heavy revolver. I have one for my Ruger Super Redhawk Toklat 454 which a carry while hiking in grizzly country.

Check eBay and search "leather holster for an N Frame." You should get several pages of options. Many should fit your want for a holster to match your revolver.

Back in the day, I carried my 6" S&W duty revolver in a Safariland holster. Bianchi holsters were also very popular with police officers, and both certainly would be "period issue" for your Pre-Model 27.

I like my plain ol' Don Hume belt slide at the range. I use it for both K and N frames in a variety of barrel lengths.

For the last 40 years, I have been using a Bianchi 5BHL for my 6 1/2" Smith & Wesson

Thumbsnap Suede Lined Belt Holster - Revolver

Bianchi also made this holster in an unlined holster, the 5BH, but I like lined holsters

Is your Per-Model 27 a 6" or a 6 1/2"? It is my understanding that the 6 1/2" barrel was more common until the later days of Model 27-2 production. If you have a 6 1/2" barrel make sure your holster will accommodate the extra half inch.

The Bianchi 111 and 5BHL may be the most common leather holsters that you can find in stock at a local shop for an N frame revolver. Galco is another possibility. As mentioned, there are others available on line. Both Don Hume and El Paso Saddlery make high quality holsters.

Keep an eye out for used holsters at local shops, shows and on line sellers. I picked up a lightly used El Paso Tom Threepersons basket stamped holster for a 6" N frame (it will NOT fit a 6 1/2") at a show for $89 off the retail price. That was definitely worth the price of admission!

You may want to find a period holster for your revolver. Past makers like Bucheimer, Eubanks and Lawrence made quality holsters at the top of their line that, when found in good condition, will serve your need for an occasional trip to the range and add a point of conversation and historical context to your top of the line revolver.

I've always been impressed with Simply Rugged holsters. I've only owned their pancakes, but their other offerings look very good too. Usually a 3-4wk delivery, sooner if you can find something in their gear-to-go bin.

Have also owned and been impressed with Lobo and Rgrizzle. And I do have one Triple K and am pleasantly surprised by the quality.

Hunter Model 1100 size 15 is made for a S&W N Frame with 6.5" barrel.
If your barrel is 6" you would want size 14. Sending a PM.

For an older style holster, try A.E. Nelson.
