weum817: If you used new concrete construction for walls, floor, or overhead, you need a drain hole someplace and an electrical outlet for a dehumidifier. I built a walk-in a few years ago and the dehumidifier pulled two quarts of water out of the air for a week and then slowly pulled a decreasing amount out for another month. I left the dehumidifier to do its job for about 6 months. ............ Big Cholla

I did one several years ago. After the reinforced concrete walls and ceiling were poured I had the interior finished out by a cabinet maker I had at the house doing some other work. Biggest problem with mine is it is too damn small and I knew it even before it was poured, but putting one in an existing house you may be limited as to where it can go. In an ideal situation it would be in the basement and done during construction of the home.

I wouldn't think turning a porch into a walk in vault would be a real good idea. I would want my vault enclosed on all 4 sides and preferably the ceiling by other rooms. We are planning on doing this when I retire and we have a house built back home. Work benches on one wall with shelves above and then shelves and racks on the other wall. Then, the back wall would be a display area for fine guns. Good luck with however you do it.

If this is not concrete construction in walls floor and ceiling, have your contractor insert rebar rods horizontally through a separate set of upright wall studs at about 6" intervals around all walls and ceiling, and the floor if possible. Something that will stop a chain saw and keep people out long enough to discourage them.

Make sure it has electric and if possible heat & AC for climate control. If possible make it at least half again bigger than you planned, because you will regret it later.

Mine is 4"X7" interior, and is safe only, located within my "Gun Room", which has work counters around 3 walls for loading press's, cleaning/repair, and shelving for gun cases etc. The "Gun Room has separate steel door to go through before getting to the vault room. Don't forget plenty of electric outlets at bench top height and your TV and radio shelving. Include plenty of shelving for Tools, dies, powder, primers, etc. Leave space for under bench storage of ammo.

Good grief, some of you guys have fantastic walk in safes... This is a very tempting idea for me when I get a house.
