Default Cannon EX20 Gun Safe? (4/25-delivery)(4/26-disaster)(5/21-success!)

I have about 6 rifles/shotguns and 8 handguns - but adding at a brisk clip. I currently cram these into a $100 locking gun cabinet but would like to upgrade to something more secure and keep the cabinet for ammo storage etc.

A few months ago there was mention here about this Cannon EX20 safe from Costco which is about to go on sale again on 3/11 for $580 delivered.

The specs sound pretty good. I know it's not the ultimate and that you should always buy bigger, but does anyone have this particular safe and how do you like it?

UPDATE (4/25/10): Got a call and set up delivery for tomorrow afternoon - I've been tracking this safe for over a week from CA - hope it's in one piece! I'll try to take a few pictures to post. Our driveway is pretty steep and long and it's curbside delivery - hope I can make a deal to get it into/near the garage. FYI ordered this from Costco on 3/19/10 - pretty fast service.

UPDATE (4/26/10): So the 18 wheeler pulls up in front of our driveway - driver greets me and we chat about all the safes he has delivered. Mine is in the front of the truck. He gets the forklift and tries to maneuver it to the lift gate - can't get both forks under the pallet because the pallet is too small so he's balancing the thing as he comes toward me at the lift gate. Now I should mention that our street is steep and the truck is parked with the cab on the upside. You can see what's coming (I sure could) - the safe separated from the pallet and fell flat on it's face - right on the front side where the electronic lock resides . "Guess you're refusin' delivery now" he says. "Guess so" I said. So there you have it - 6 weeks of waiting - pphhtt !! (or however you spell it). He made the necessary calls - I called Costco to see if I could re-order - they will get back to me if it's available.

Final Update! (5/21/10) Well my new Cannon EX20 was just delivered not 2 hours ago. The R&L driver was awesome - complete opposite of the first guy - helped get it off the truck and even helped place it near where it will reside in the basement (our basement is the same level as the garage.) He got a nice tip! As far as the safe itself goes, it appears very nice - certainly worth the money. Once I have more time, I'll try to post some pictures. I think this model might be discontinued now so I'm happy that I was able to grab one at a great price. Costco came through no problem and so did R&L.

I do not have the safe but also saw it in the Costco ad magazine we get. It appears to be as good or better than a lot of them out there. With free delivery, I am thinking of getting it also. I do not see how you can go wrong and it certainly is better that a gun "cabinet". Costco has the best return policy if for whatever reason you had to return it. (Not that, that would be an easy thing to return)

I just wonder what is included in delivery? To your front door or do they actually bring it in the house and put it where you want it??

As I understand it, they provide lift gate delivery to curbside - the rest is up to you/me. I think it's very doable - I had a 550 lb cabinet saw delivered the same way a few years back and three of us rolled it up our inclined driveway on a dolly. Now we didn't have to take it up/down stairs, so that's another thing altogether.

For me it's inside frist door, then I have to put it where I want. But could pay extra to have it placed where I want it. But for the extra charge I'll Put my 2 older son's and son inlaw to work, to help their oldman out for a change.

discussion of this safe on calguns
Costco Cannon Safe EX20 Sale $200 Off - Calguns.net

i just got my tax return funds and they had been earmarked for a safe. i was really leaning towards a AMSEC 6036 but now im torn.. i woudl prefer something even bigger. i can get a 60x36 in my closet and give up half my shirt space.i would prefer it in the house to teh garage and i would like more than 30 mins of fire. but at that price its hard to pass up. the only problem really is that i feel like i need a bigger one just to get all my stuff in there. i really want a 6000 pound 72x48, that i would feel ok putting in my garage

is this cannon safe US made ?

apparently most delivery guys will put in your house for a small cash honorarium and a soda for the road

I think both the dial and electronic locks now have the same one year warranty for labor, parts are lifetime.

When I bought my safe electric lock 5 years labor
dial 3 years labor. Parts lifetime

No problems with the electric lock until last month.
Two months left on free labor warranty.
Cannon had me fixed in 4 days, The locksmith was a local who stated he fixes electronic locks 3-1 over dial locks. But he stated his safe also has a electronic lock for the convenience.

I don't think my next safe will have the electronic lock. Maybe keep some guns in each type of safe.
If two guns are better then one can the same be said for safes?

Good afternoon,

I just got the call from the delivery people that my safe will be delivered tomorrow. I tried to ask if they could deliver it on Friday instead, as that is my day off. The dispatcher said no-go as they would then have to charge storage fees. The best I could do was get the latest delivery in the day (between 3:00p.m. - 5:00p.m.) with a 1 hour before they arrive phone call. This is my first real gun safe as I've been using a cheap "fire safe" for years to store my handguns. I'll clean out the closet tonight and try to move furniture out of the way tomorrow morning in hopes that I can pay the delivery guy to deliver the safe inside the house - wish me luck. By the way, for those who have had a safe delivery, what tip, if any did you give the driver besides "look both ways before crossing the street", "join the NRA", etc. Would $5 - $10 be okay?

Wish me luck,

Dave

UPDATE:

Well, delivery was without any problems. The driver and assistant were very nice and professional. They stated that they were only supposed to deliver to the curbside, but they would be happy to put it into my garage - which they did using their pallet jack. The box is plain, without any ads to indicate it contains a gun safe. My skinny 14 yr. old daughter and wiry 12 yr. old son helped me move the safe from the garage using 3/4 inch black iron pipes from bar clamps as rollers, transferred it onto a large, sturdy old furniture dolly, and finally onto some of the round, plastic furniture sliders you can get from Home Depot. As far as the safe goes, I'm a bit disappointed in the quality - this safe does not appear to compare to the Winchester safes that Costco had on sale - only 4 locking bolts, real el cheapo handles, and a lock that you must enter the numbers into slowly for it to work. This is my first real gun safe, so I'll chalk it up to a learning experience, and I do agree that any gun safe is better than none.

Best of luck,

Dave

When I had my huge heavy safe delivered they just rolled it threw the rooms on a heavy PC pipe, about 3 pieces, just kept picking up the last one that rolled free and setting it ahead. Worked real slick!

The last time I moved one of mine I called a friend that is in safe and lock sales and asked him the best way to move a 1000 pound safe. He told me to use about two dozen golf balls in the same manner you used the pipe. Golf balls make it easier to go around corners.

Why didn't he adjust the forks closer together so he could move it correctly? They are easily moved by simply raising the end of the fork up to disengage then sliding it in or out.
What was the name of the delivering carrier?
And lastly, before the accident, did he agree to put it in your garage?

Pretty sure it was a "fixed fork", manual pallet jack that the driver was using in the back of his trailer.
The fault was in the bone head that loaded the truck and didn't stack the small maufactures pallet on top of a conventional pallet so that the driver could get his pallet jack under and unload properly.

Good question - he was back near the cab and I couldn't really see what he was doing with the lift. When he finally appeared from behind some other cargo, it was obvious that he was trying to balance it somehow using just one of the forks - in a hurry or something I guess. I mentioned we are on a steep hill - gravity took care of the rest. The carrier was R&L. I tracked the safe from San Bernardino CA for the last week. Before it fell over on it's face, it seemed fine (no tears, cuts in the cardboard packaging etc) - made it almost 3000 miles but not the last 200 ft! No he did not agree to put it anywhere but the curb and he really didn't have any equipment to move it up our inclined driveway anyway.

I'm sorry to hear about your mishap. I took delivery of the very same model from Costco about a month ago. They were the same carrier (R&L) delivered from San Diego to Alabama. The driver placed it in my garage, but my drivway was flat, so not much trouble there. He just had a pallet jack with him. They will have to give you a replacement at the carrier's expense. It is a pretty good deal from Costco. I had a friend help me move it up 4 steps into my house from the garage. Just take your time. It's not that heavy (make sure you bolt it down the floor afterwards). Good luck.

R&L must have the contract as they are also delivering mine from Los Angeles - San Diego - to Texas.

Lou, hopefully I won't have the problem as our street and driveway are about as flat as a pool table. At a minimum, he should be able to just back the truck up to the garage without any problems. I should know in a bit and I'll post an update.

All, thanks for the great tips about the PVC pipe rollers and golf balls. I've got a sturdy dolly, hopefully all of these will work for me.

Regards,

Dave

I went with Cannon because of the warranty ...it ment alot to me.
Also I went with Dials....I understand that some want to get into them quick and if I'm aorund the house and in and out I'll day lock it ...other than that ....I dont want batteries or quick.

Thanks for all the sympathy guys!

I'm still waiting for Costco to get back to me on the availability of another EX20 - I'm not sure that I'll be able to get another as they seem to have replaced it with model C21E for $850 (not the sale price.) This is a little wider (30" v. 28") and a bit heavier at 450lb. I might have to wait for a sale on it.

I would not think that you would have to come out of pocket with any more money. The carrier should have to replace it with the same or better model at no cost to you. JMHO.

Well, since this thread is resurrected from a year ago and I was the OP, I feel that I should chime in to say that I am very happy with this safe. I have about 20+ handguns and half dozen long guns in it with room for many more (and I haven't even thought about door storage.) The electronic lock has been perfect and the interior AC is nice as I added a goldenrod immediately and it's been humming along with no problems.

I reconfigured the inside a bit, adding shelves etc.

The one thing I wish is that the door opened beyond about 100 degrees or so, but with the internal hinges, that's how it goes.

For the price, delivered, you cannot go wrong for the casual collector/hunter etc.
