There was one part in the movie, "Hannie Caulder", that gained my interest; string. This was when Hannie was building up her wrists, her hand grip, and her arms to handle a pistol. Her mentor, played by Robert Culp, had her used a dowel or stick, with string tied to it, with a rock tied to the other end of the string.

I made my Weight Winder, about 15 years ago, using a 1' inch dowel, long boot laces, and various iron weights. I also have to use a grip master since I had my stroke.

I used one when I was in high school wrestling. It's a good exercise for someone fairly young, however I would not recomend to an older person until they've been evaluated for Tunnel Carpal.

Still have mine in the weight room downstairs. I believe the "Iron boots" strap on shoe weights with a hole to add dumbells to are still attached. Yup. Charles Atlas here I come. Actually it was a great grip, shoulder and forearm excersize. Wind-up one direction and wind down slowly then reverse wind-up and down. Repeat as necessary. Feel the burn..........

I have a commercially made winder. It has rubber grips similar to old fashioned bicycle grips. I thought that was to make it easier, no, the grips are loose on the dowel, so that you have to squeeze hard to get enough friction to turn the dowel. Then you have to maintain the squeeze or it unwinds by its self.
