I was in a pawn shop yesterday that is located in a run down part of town just to see what they had. As expected, their merchandise was of low quality. Their gun selection was made of six handguns. Only one got any attention from me.

They had a John Wayne Commemorative revolver, complete with the wooden presentation case, the papers and plaque. It was nicely decorated with the gold writing and impressions. There were no cylinder turn marks and I have reason to believe that is is a new gun (likely the only thing in the store that was new).

The issue I had was the price. $3,000 plus tax. I cannot find any thing giving the value of such a gun. Naturally this is a safe queen and I might be tempted to buy it at a lower price but is the gun worth their asking price?

Ruger, Colt and possibly others have made John Wayne Commemoratives. I would check some of the online gun auction sites like GunsAmerica and Auctionarms dot com before I made an offer on the gun. Generally speaking commemoratives aren't considered to be a good investment by collectors.

Assuming this was a Colt SAA, a couple are rare and worth big bucks. A couple are not so I guess it depends on what it was.

You aren't saying it was a S&W right? At least that's the impression I get.

It was not a S&W. Once I saw the price, I stopped looking and the brand was not on the price tag.

I am not interested in collectors value for an investment. I just like John Wayne. He was a man's man, a real American, a man of character and a hero to many. I currently have an autographed photo of him at my office. Should I have bought the gun, I would have placed it under the photo for a display.

Oldman, what kind of gun is it? A colt SAA? I belive the american historical fondation might have had a uberti commisioned SAA copy of it. I have one from them that is a almost exact replica of the silver engraved colt saa copy. Last I looked, even made by uberti I think they were asking close to $3,000! They were real silver plated, not nickle and were probley fulley hand engraved in italy. The one I have is a copy of general george pattons colt saa.

If you are a big fan of the Duke, the Winchester John Wayne Commemorative rifles are still around and can be had for less than half that price.

Top Gun, Inc. on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Buford, GA had two of those rifles last week.
