I've got a couple ball caps I like with mossy oak patches on the front. They're a little dirty (not greasy). They could be replaced for $10 or so but I'm on an austerity kick. No "how to care for" labels. Can you put them in the washer?

I do and they seem okay. Don't use the dryer but let them air dry to keep their shape a bit better. Others can tell you more.

I wash them in the dishwasher, works great.

You can buy a plastic enclosure to put the hat in and wash it on the top rack of the dishwasher. But I'm with Rick, you could probably just set it flatly on the top rack and it would do fine.

Sink, detergent, scrub brush, elbow grease.

Dry the hat while on your head, it will be the most comfortable hat ever after drying on your head!

The old caps had a heavy cardboard bill. If you washed it it ruined the cardboard. The new ones have plastic bills. Use some pre wash on the sweat stains and just throw that puppy in the washing machine-It will do fine-unless is't so old that the fabric won't take the washing-in which case throw it away and I'll send you one lightly used LSU cap

I have a spare Bama hat if you need one. :D

What is this "washing" ? Don't you know an old, sweat-stained, dirty hat has character? :)

I have the plastic cap washers, and they fit into the dishwasher or clothes washer.
One thing for sure, you find out what the caps are made of. Some come out OK, some just fall apart. One cap lost all its color.

Today is warsh day. I have a couple Carhart jackets in the washer now. My wash machine gives out a groan when I wash those jackets. If that machine survives I'm gonna throw one cap in the next load on perm press. Mr. Lawyer I've got a knock off Green Bay hat I could trade. I had a pretty good hat collection going, but over the summer I did a Terminator style approach to throwing "stuff" away. Looks like not many hats survived. 39 degrees here this morning when I went for coffee. My old bald head set off a condition red "hat required" alert.

I use one of those cap shaper thingy's with good results.

Well, thanks to all for advice. I took one hat and used some spray and wash stuff on it. Washed it in the sink and rinsed it off. Took a small plastic garbage bag and stuffed it full of crumpled up paper. (actually a pretty good simulation of my head including contents) Stuffed the bag into the hat to shape it and hung it out on the back porch. We shall see.

Washing Caps

I have one of the plastic shapers. Wash/soak in bathroom sink with hand washing soap. Use Spray & Wash on any stains. Rinse, stretch over cap form, dry in sun! Smells wonderful and is clean! If you want to put more body in the cap, spray with spray starch before drying! Comes out great! Have several Browning hats that have probably been washed 25 times each or more. They will fade over time, but what the heck, gives them character!

Heres what I do and it works wonders. Also it does not eat the stitching etc. Buy some oxy clean and you can either spray the hat or get the powder form and mix it with water in the sink. Soak the hat for 30 min to an hour and when you pull the hat out, rinse with warm water. Youll see the water in the sink will be dark brown and rinsing the hat gets rid of anything left over. My hats get filthy from my line of work and are like brand new when Im done cleaning them.

Good luck. (ps: oxy clean is like 2 bucks)
