How do you guys keep your safes prior to opening? I had to enter a home (very bad run down neighborhood) today that had a large gun safe. The home owner turned the combination to just one number and it opened. The owner said he kept the safe dialed to the third number so all he has to do is dial the fourth number and the guns inside are readily available. Before he leaves the home, he messes the combo up and then when he returns, he dials the first three numbers.

My safes are all four number combos as well but I have them where I go through the entire combinations before they open. It takes a while but none of the guns inside would ever be needed immediately.

BTW: I was at the man's residence to question him about a MVA he witnessed and he saw my gun and wanted to show me one he has. Very nice man but has been in the home for over 40 yrs and the neighborhood went down around him.

Is your safe ready to open, unlocked or full combo required? I can see reasons for each way.

I have a keypad and not a dial. I'm still trying to figure out which system is actually better. Sometimes I wish I had a dial.

If I did have a dial, I would not pre-spin it. I figured out back in high school that other kids would spin the dial of a lock while pulling it down and more often than not it would open. You ultimately pay the price for being lazy.

I have a 26 gun Browning safe with a combo lock and a Stack On 36 gun safe with a combo lock . On both I use the full combo as I have no need to get in them quick . If I need to get to a gun quick I have a small 2 gun lock box with the finger pad style lock right next to my bed on my night stand with 2 loaded revolver's.

If I am home and going in and out of the safe I "set" it otherwise I spin the dial both ways several times. If I NEED a gun there is always a loaded one handy...

Mine has a key lock which can be used alone, or along with the combo.
Unless my wife and I will both be gone from the house I just use the key lock.

I keep mine locked its a sportsman steel but its only a three number like most of us i have one i can put hands on right now

My safes are fully locked, combos. If I need a gun fast, I go to my hip or pocket, always carry. At night, it is next to me on the night stand.

electronic lock w/ battery backup.
Gun is only out on my night stand when I go to bed.
Have a 14 year old, so I don't want it out at other times.

I just use the dial for the whole combination after passing the retinal scan and disabling the laser and tear gas systems . . . .

At home, I leave it on zero, one turn away from the number.....

Also, I keep a loaded double action revolver (something that starts with a "4") on a shelf at waist height, turned so that it will fit my right hand. The safe is oriented so that the door will be between me and anyone forcing me to open it..
