I try hard to stay on 'this' side of the rockies but my son is graduating from Ft. Sill this weekend. We're flying to Fayetville, AR & driving up.

If you're in the area and would like a burger or can recommend a good shootin range let me know. We'll do Fayetville tues/wed, drive to lawton on thrs and we've reserved a park for friday if you'd like to meet some 'new' soldiers.

Since we can't have a thread without pics we'll see if this brings back any memories. It's a different army that has facebook pages for their recruits.

Cannot offer any suggestions but Bon Voyage and congratulations to the graduate.

Be safe.

I grew up there and really can't recommend a thing. Of course I left in 1971, went back in 1997 for four years, still nothing to recommend.

Perhaps things have changed, but I wouldn't bet on it.

You should take half a day or so and tour the Ft Sill museum. It is a very nice one, and has a very nice collection of cannons along with other indoor exhibits.

You could always go to Meers, through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and get a world famous (so they say) Meersburger. Meers - Store & Restaurant

As far as shooting, the only place I ever went was to the range on Ft Sill. I don't even know if they have a range for public use in Lawton.

WoW! That tower is an improvement. When I went through Ft Sill we still repelled down Geronimo Cliff.

I liked Ft. Sill, went to Lawton a few times I am sure it has changed in 30 years. One of my co workers sons is out there. My Grandparents and went to some Native Americn sites while we were out there. It was also the first time I heard of a dry county.

Same here...I left in 1971 and never went back except for two or three visits to family.

I remember some really, really hot and dry years.

My buddies and I would visit Meers for a burger on occasion and our shooting range was pastureland out in the county, west of Lawton off the side of the road.

Congrats on your sons graduation. Don't know a thing about the area but I'm guessing whatever is there will pale in comparison to being there for your son. Enjoy!

??

Just out of curiosity, why would you fly in to Fayetteville if you're headed for Ft. Sill?

Take a ride to Medicine Park and then up to Scott Mountain.Great view. You'll most likely see prairie dogs and maybe a bison or twenty.Don't mess with them.Beware of the longhorns they hurt a lot of people. Also Lake Latonka has some huge catfish.
I thought when Uncle Sam sent me there for permanent party it was gonna be hell.I found some cool places and really hit it off with the locals.Lawton kinda sucked,Its most all military.
That was 30 something years ago and I bet its about the same.

Most of all,Tell your son thanks.

If you feel like driving here is a little day trip. Start off by going to Medicine Bluff on Ft Sill. The Ft Sill Fish and Game has a little animal exhibit there and it is just a nice relaxing place to be. After that head out the back gate (if still open) or out toward Lake Elmer Thomas to get into the wildlife refuge. Once in there take a drive up Mt. Scott and you can see quite a bit of the surrounding countryside. Then off to Meers for a Meersburger. Then back into the refuge and just mosey around, stopping at the visitors center. After that you can head to Cache and take the highway back to Lawton or go even further into the refuge and come out between Snyder and Indiahoma for the drive back to Lawton.

The two places we went out to eat at the most was a Chinese place called the Lucky China on Cache road (6400 block or so) and a German place that I can't find anymore. There were a couple of small german shops where I would get a hard roll and schnitzel for lunch. The one I went to the most was in a residential area, called Roundtree's. It is just a deli and store, no sit down eating.

Take this info with a grain of salt or two, I haven't been there for nearly 10 years. But if past experience is anything, it hasn't changed that much. Maybe a few more chain restaurants and another WalMart, but that would probably be it. ;)

If you feel like exploring a little more you can get directions to the Ft Sill Apache cemetery and see Geronimo's grave. It stands out a bit from the other government issue grave markers. It wouldn't take that much extra time to see along with the other sights. Save a good half day for the Museum though, you can even see where Geronimo was kept prisnor.
