Default Watch pockets

I primarily wear blue jeans (sometimes black jeans - but not often). They have a convenient watch pocket which, I suppose, used to be where people carried their watch, which was appropriately called a *pocket watch*.
Well -- Ya just don't see too many pocket watches anymore but the watch pocket is still there....
My cell phone is an old flip up Samsung thing that fits into the aforementioned watch pocket quite well, making it a *phone pocket*, but I want a *smart phone* now. I believe that most of them are too big to fit into my phone pocket

Do any of y'all have a *smart phone* that fits into that little pocket, or do you have to have yet another holster to tote the thing.

BTW - I'm considering a Samsung Galaxy S II (this Samsung phone has been working flawlessly for years so I think I'll stick with that brand).

I wonder if the watch pocket could be replaced with a larger phone pocket without too much trouble Hmmmmm

They've gone the wrong way, haven't they? Instead of being smaller, lighter, and handier, we have the problem you mention. I used to have a pretty convenient and secure holster for my last cell phone. When a new phone came along, I couldn't find anything similar, so when I don't want the phone in my pocket I just leave it in the car or on the desk. Very rarely miss the silly thing.

Smart phones! If I am going to learn anything it's going to be about guns. Smart phones are for smart people and that lets me out. Don

Another good use for the watch pocket is, you can carry a Colt Mustang, a Kel-tec or a Ruger LCP in it and hook your belt over the tang for retention of the gun without need for a holster. Fits as good as a holster.
When needed I just pull up the belt slightly with my left index finger, freeing the gun, in the same motion of raising your shirt or T-shirt and the gun is easily accessible to draw. It works, try it.

DB, I tried it with a Kel Tec PF9 and that worked pretty well. I will stick with my Nemesis usually, but thanks for the idea.

It may not work out perfectly for all day everyday carry, but for when you have to pop out to the local store, walk the dog or get the paper it sure comes in handy to have the gun on you, hidden and secure this way.

I carry my Zippo lighter in my watch pocket.
Keeps it from leaking when freshly refilled (I hate that burning sensation) & from getting scratched by loose change.
I have a "dumb" phone and will keep it that way.

Riggs jeans and work pants (by Wrangler) have a nice big watch pocket, easily big enough for a small pocket pistol, and even big enough to take something like my CZ50 or a PPK.

I thought it might be a good place for 4" folding knife; it will lie easily in the bottom of the pocket, and stay there, but I made the mistake of using the clip. The pocket is not deep enough, and sitting tends to push the knife out of the pocket. I lost a nice Benchmade assisted knife that way, and would hesitate to carry a pistol there without some means of securing it, like tucking it under my belt, as suggested above.

I keep a tiny (cover most of it with your thumbprint, about a quarter inch thick) Princeton Tec Pulsar LED light in my watch pocket, tethered by a short length of very light line looped through the adjacent belt loop. It's not much of a light, but it's enough to find a keyhole, or read a combination lock, or anything else that's within range (a few feet) of the surprisingly bright little light. Even a very little bit of light is way better than none...

I keep a couple quarters in mine so I'm prepared when I get to the Aldi shopping cart corral.

The medallion in DAVWINGMAN's post above caught my eye, I have a "Medal of Award" from the same 1915 exposition. Awarded to my Mother's Grandfather for wheat submitted from his farm.
The sculptures on the back of the medal would seem a bit risque for that era, but there they are.

When I got my iPhone I found that carpenter jeans have a pocket just the right size.

And for the smart phone haters, think of it as a pocket computer/atlas/compass/internet interface/remote auto start/astrolabe/weather radio/camera/music player/ etc. that happens to do phone calls - makes much more sense that way ...

Good points there...
I actually have a use for a smart phone.
I'm our town's SKYWARN ham radio operator.
A couple of weeks ago I was between two severe storms - One was a bit east of me and the other was a bit west. The one west of me produced large hail and a tornado.
I had no idea which way I should go to get out of the way or what way either storm was tracking.
I decided right then that I need a smart phone so that I can see the Nexrad radar when I need to....

BTW - ANYONE can be in the SKYWARN program. The more eyes watching the sky and reporting the better and sooner warnings can be issued. You don't need to be a ham anymore since the advent of cell phones. But you do have to be careful.

I can't find a watch pocket that is the same size even in two pairs of jeans with the same size and brand. They seem to be more of a thing about look than function. I had a cheapy Swiss Army pocket watch and had jeans that it didn't even begin to fit in that pocket.

You might try some hiking pants. Cabela's has some that have seven pockets. That might even keep Sip busy for awhile.

Yea but you can be arrested for wearing them if you're not a carpenter.
That little watch pocket in the jeans is ideal for carrying around your stash-according to the police reposts I've read over the years.

My watch pocket generally has a Streamlight Key-Mate flashlight in it.

Deadaye, I found the holster to be cumbersome. I keep my smartphone either in cargo pocket (prefer TruSpec 24-7s) or in back pocket of regular pants / jeans. If you put the phone into sleep mode, it wont butt dial anyone and you cant hurt it.

There's a young woman where I work who--I swear--thought the watch pocket in her jeans was for carrying prophylactics.

I have the Samsung Galaxy and I love it. You will, too. It won't fit in the watch pocket. I didn't want to belt carry. I got an Otterbox and I carry mine in my front pocket or shirt pocket. With the Otterbox, it gives the phone some grip and won't slide out of my shirt pocket when I lean over.

When you get the phone, get the Tapatalk app. It makes checking and posting in this forum, and many other forums, a breeze.
