I was given a metal detector a couple of years back but I never got a chance to do anything with it. Now that my recreational activities are limited due to my arm injury I got the thing out today and put in some new batteries and hope to try it out tomorrow. I had one about 10 years back but it was very complicated and heavy, the box actually strapped around your waist and then hooked to a separate detector. No matter how I tuned it or set it I would pick up everything. I remember finding square iron nails nearly two feet down but never anything valuable. I spent so much time digging up junk of all kinds that I got bored with it. This one, even though it is a cheaper detector, works well on coins which I got it set up for today. I was just wondering if anyone else ever used one for looking for lost treasure and what the nicest and most valuable thing you ever found?

Have had a lot of fun with mine, found some nice old coins, lots of newer coins and some jewelry....neatest thing I've found was an old rimfire revolver (an 1860's side hammer design) on an old farm lot that was being cleared for construction. I tend to dig any good signal so I get a lot of junk but sometimes I find some oddities (old race track tokens, tools, etc.) Have fun, never know what you might find.

not a metal detector but the primordial ooze of one.
just took possession of a specialized meter for tuning coils with which Ill build a metal detector amongst other things.
I'm thinkin brass

I've had a White's M 6 for about 5 years now, it's my other addiction. I live in a pretty small town, so areas to detect are limited, but I've managed several rings, (nothing of any great value) and of course lots of coins. I've found 1 Walker that's worth about $50, and 1 Mercury dime that's worth about $25, but the fresh air, exercise, and me time are invaluable. Have fun and find lots of treasure...

my dad used his whites almost every weekend when i was younger. i was the designated treasure carrier as i enjoyed the time with him. he got pretty good with tuning it...he could tell when something was junk. he could differentiate between dimes, quarters, nickles, and pennies by the tone they gave off. he had found a lost graduation ring and an engagement ring. i've often thought about asking mom if i could have it.

We use "metal detectors" (wands) to safety check the participants during Active Shooter Training, does that count? :p;):D

All participants are briefed, then formed-up where they physically check themselves for guns, knives, ninja throwing stars, off-duty grenades...you'd be surpised ;), "What, that Glock?. A "Buddy Check" is next and then we run the wands over 'em before they move to the "sterile" Exercise Area...where they're issued their "Blue" or AirMunitions weapons.

Same/Same, of course, for all the Role Players...

Works great, wish I could keep all the "treasure" (guns/mags/knives) I've "discovered" ;):D...

I bought one about 6-7 years ago. Hardly seem to have much
time to play with it though. It's a Garrett Ace 250. I also have the
other two add on coils, so I have three coils to choose from.
The first month I had it, I found over 500 coins just in our yard,
and there are still more out there. So it does work pretty well.
I've used it for finding survey pins at properties, and it's pretty much
paid for itself just doing that. I also have a handheld pinpointer which
is basically a small detector that you use to find the objects in the
holes when you are digging. It speeds things up quite a bit.
The Ace 250 is pretty danged good for a appx $200 detector.
I think with all the coils, pinpointer, and coil covers which I have for
all the coils, I've got about $430 or so into the package.
Like I say, it's paid for itself just finding rebar survey pins.
But I've found other goodies, such as a nice Buck Knife I found one
day when looking for survey pins for the first lot I tried it on.
I'm not that much of a coin hunter like some are.. I like finding old
relics and stuff. I like prowling old home sites and such more than I
would looking for coins.

I have a Whites IDX with a Blue Max 950 coil..I've had it for almost 10 years but haven't used it for a couplle years...I usually hunted under bleachers at ball fields or fair grounds..Picnic groves are good too..I've found rings and coins but nothing big time..but a LOT of junk..It's good to spend a day with..Lots of luck with yours...TIN...

I have a Whites DFX but don't get out as much as I would like. Most of the good treasure hunting areas are off limits. Lots' of revolutionary sites in NJ but they are protected. Some hunters have had some good luck detecting on neighboring property for musket and canon balls. For now mostly change and the occasional horse shoe or door hinge.

I have a X-P Pro that I have used on and off for several years. I used it on several old homeplaces, ball fields, and the beach. I was a member of the Gold Prospectors club and used it on a couple of their leased sites. I have found old metal cars, military brass hat emblems and buttons from the airmen of Donaldson AFB who rented houses of my father. I have never found anything of real high value, but the exercise was very good. Better than a treadmill(lol). My son is using it now and we will take it to the beach in Nov. Hope some old spanish gold has washed up.
