Cowboy Boots
I'm thinking about buying a pair of "Cowboy Boots". I have a rather wide foot especially at the ball. Out of the Tony Lama. Nacona, Justin and other choices does anyone have recomendations? How about quality and durability? I think I will have plenty of choices to try some on but nothing like hearing from a long time user.

As Bill said, Lucchese. Expensive but worth it. Although when I could still wear boots, I did have a pair of Tony Lamas I loved. They felt like glove leather. Your choice though as to what fits you best. You said you had a wide foot at the ball. I don't know if you can find this in boots unless they are custom made but I used to buy my loafers for work with a D width at the ball and a B width at the heel.

IMO, Nocona is the best bang for the buck. Luccese certainly makes a good boot, and I own a pair, but they ain't cheap.

If you are looking for the best and don't mind spending the money, JB HILL in Texas. Their boots are handmade and they'll make them off of a pattern of your foot, so you know they'll fit.
Lucchese's are the best mid-priced.
Ariat makes the most comfortable everyday boot.

I own a pair of Tony Lamas. They are some of the most comfortable footwear I've ever had, and I didn't even buy the real expensive ones. Mine are on the lower end of the price scale, but still nice & comfortable.
I don't have any experience with other brands, so I won't comment on them.

I was a S.A.S.S. member and Cowboy shooter for 20 years and so I had few pair of CB Boots. I have not shot in a SASS Match in a few years now so I gave away the boots. I sincerely hope you find them more comfortable than I did. When I did shoot the Matches I use to bring Tennis Shoes to wear home after the match. Ouch!
One pair were Tony Lama's and the other was Durango I believe. I had a pair of Frye Boots a while ago too, but again they were too uncomfortable for me.
YMMV

I also vote for Luchese. Go with the classics, if you don't mind paying more. Try to have a Luchese rep fit you...their website should provide information about this. As a result of a fitting, I learned I needed a low instep arch to achieve the best fit so I ordered a pair that way and they are as comfortable as cowboy boots can be. With the classics, you can specify the type of toe and the type/height of heel. So, you can have it your way, tailored to how you will use the boots.

I cannot wear Tony Lamas as they are too narrow. And you have the get their "Americana" line unless you're okay with Chinese made. Not at all the same company they used to be...
In the $200 range, Boulet from Canada. I own a couple pairs, one is 20 years old. Check out the style 7032 or style 0312. Medium cowboy toe and available in EEE. Excellent daily user. http://www.bouletboots.com/
Life is short or as the kids say: "YOLO". In the $600 range, Lucchese Classics. Think of them as "Performance Center" boots. Mine are L1676. Lucchese Boot Co. - Official Site / Lucchese Classics - L1676

Depends on your budget. I had Tony Lamas and I was happy. But I also has Durangos and they did the job. I have new Ariat's for sale if interested...

For a off the shelf boot,,,You will have a hard time beating Lucchese..If you wat them at a discount...Go to ....grapevinehill.com Right now they have a 40% discount sale on most of their models they handle diccontinued models of Lucchese, at much better prices than first run dealers.....Granted Lucchese isn't the Lucchese of 25 years ago but still better than most.....If you can try the Lucchese Classic models....I just purchased a pair of their Claqssic Ropers at a very discounted price...Their return policy is very liberal.. Ironicaly grapevinehill is in New England. They have made a deal with Lucchese to handel overruns and different models...They also handle a lot of different shoe brands usually in the higher price venue. at a pretty good discount..In the 60's I had a last on file at the original Lucchese when it was still family owned. I have noe idea who really owns them now but quaity is still better than most factory made boots.. Grapevinehill.com

I wore Lamas and Naconas for 25 years. About 10-12 years ago I went to work boots. I got tired of winter salt stains on my boots and slip sliding in the ice n snow. Make sure they fit from the git go. Don't buy the "they're tight but they'll stretch" baloney. Hell hath no fury like tight boots.

I've had a pair of Naconas for 30 years, resoled once. Great boots. But I've also been pleased with Lucchese. My current dress boot (yeah, in TX we wear em with suits and jeans) are Dan Post lizard skins.

Thanks for all the good advice. I can totally agree that not all leather will stretch to fit. When I was in the Army one of the guys in our unit who was from Richardson told me that in Dallas in the early 70s if someone said they were a Detective don't ask for a Badge just see if they were wearing Tony Lamas. My work boots for job sites are Red Wings steel toe bought in 1991 and still on the job.

Wore 'em for years. Don't wear 'em anymore. Prefer work boots and sneakers...more comfortable.

The main thing is make sure they feel right when you put them on. I like the way Tony Lama's look but they have way too tight a throat for my high instep, Nacona's, Justins, and Dan Post just feel better to me. If you can afford a custom made pair Leddys in Ft. Worth and Abilene are both really good but pricey. The most comfortable pair I own were custom made in Mexico and the cheapest too, but I would be real hesitant to go down there these days! Good luck.

tried several brands and i currently have 2 pairs of Double H boots, both pairs have had the heels replaced. the tall pair with the riding heel has a slip resistant sole that still looks new. very tough boots and worth evey penny, i suggest staying away from justin boots unless you wan to replace them often.

Nothing feels as good as a good fitting pair of boots unless it is a good fitting pair of tennis shoes.

I'll throw my 2c in for Dan Post. I have worn out several pairs of Tony Lamas and a bunch of Justins. They were all good, just make sure they fit. I don't wear anything but 1" heels anymore, the riding heels are hard on the ankles and feet.
We had a newcomer here a few years ago braggin' that he was so much a cowboy that he wore cowboy boots for bedroom slippers. Most old cowboys who were real working cowboys wear sneakers and low heeled boots because their feet and ankles are so messed up from wearing high heeled boots for so long. The new comer isn't around here anymore. Don't believe anyone who says he's a cowboy until youv'e seen him work cows.

I've always liked seeing good quality western boots.
I just think they look funny in places where they're 'out of place', i.e., like my area, central and coastal NC.
When I see'em on someone here, I'm always tempted to say to the wearer, 'Pilgrim, you're a long way from the plains'.
But I don't. Might get hurt.
When it's long pants time, it's hiking boots with aggressive tread for me.

I wore several different brands, Justins' and such, my last pair actually I got from my dad when he was a Mason shoe dealer, real comfortable. Unfortunately I can't wear them anymore, I have an arthritic ankle, if I wear cowboy boots, I won't walk the next day without mucho pain. Lots of good advise on here...

I just bought a pair of Tony Lama Sharkskin boots. They must of been made for me. I couldn't believe how they fit the first time I put them on. They were also stamped Made in the USA. Good fitting boot, I'd buy another pair in the future.

Tony Lama packers, or else these:
Mine are about 40 years old, bought from Gokey's before Orvis bought the brand. That photo is from the 'net, but it's how mine look when they've just been greased.

My Tony's were made in Mexico. I've worn Tony Lama for at least 20 years, in lots of different styles. They are probably too narrow for the OP. Dan Post are great, also. I have a beautiful pair of black cherry for dress, or whenever I want shiney boots. Boots that run wide are my new everyday boots. They're Resistol Ranch which is a less expensive division of Luchese. They don't fit all custom like Luchese. They're more rugged, but have really nice style to them. Mine are rough cut with calf skin insets.
Sorry, I'm tired from work and don't feel like taking pictures of my 6-7 pair of boots. They're the only footwear I own besides house shoes.
OK, here's a couple. Resistol on left and Dan Post on right.

I was wrong (again). All of my Tony Lamas are made in the USA. If I ever see made in China, I will stop wearing Tonys. I know most big brand belts are made in China. My Nacona belt is chinese, as are a lot of my other belts. I bought them online and assumed the best. Didn't discover their true heritage until I had owned them a while. They have weathered well, however.

I saw a cartoon today about China. A Chinese couple was eating dinner with there son or daughter. A parent said "now eat all your dinner, you know people in America are starving". Wasn't funny.

Clearly not drawn by an American. Our poor people are so fat and well fed they'd make two of the Chinese couple.
You should see the poor folk walking past my house during the day. Some can barely waddle down the road. They must catch a ride back up hill, but the few that walk the hill are suffering mightily! But they don't have cowboy boots, they waddle along in flip flops.

Malnutrition. Most people think of skinny emaciated folks when they hear that word....but no, the kinds of food the poor can afford or are given on assistance is nutritionally void. Sad, because then they have the problem of poor nutrition AND the health risks of obesity. It's lose-lose. They lose, and taxpayers footing their bill lose. They get stuck in the poverty cycle...
As far as boots go...we are a work boot only household, so IDK. I don't particularly care for cowboy boots or western wear.
As with any shoe make sure they are well made with a good fit. Looks like you've gotten some pretty good advice here. try them. What works for one of you might not work for all of you.

It's been years but don't wear cowboy boots any longer. Now it's Redwings for work with Ariat and Justin for casual.
But when I did wear the cowboys, Lucchese for custom and Tony Lamas for off the shelf.

One more vote for the Lucchase classics. Black Jack makes a pretty good knock off of the Lucchases for about 60% of the $.
