Remember when pagers were high tech?

I remember a young lady that borrowed her best friend's boyfriend's pager, to wear when she went to the clubs, so she looked important.

I remember being in a local tavern and hearing that familiar "BEEP BEEP BEEP" then it was followed by a woman's voice screaming for him to "get his butt home NOW"!
Laughed mine off for days after that one.

Dad wouldn't let me have a pager for the longest time. He thought I would become or look like a drug dealer.

Oh yeah. I thought I was sooooo happenin'. :D

And I had a brick phone, too. The ladies loved it. ;) Along with my Halliburton Zero briefcase.

Still have it in a closet somewhere . . . the briefcase . . .

Had to carry one for years, then got a bag phone, then a brick phone....neverending series of electronic leashes.

Now that's Tech History in the maken!!!:D My wife had the brick. I remember when I first saw someone talking on a cell phone....it was our governor lady back in the 70's..saw her in her limo talking on a phone...thought it was sooo cool...and high tech! Trying to remember her name,,,she was for all the nuke power plants in eastern wa. She had a bunch of gray hounds and lived alone. not that has anything to do with the thread.

Dixey Lee Ray I believe her name was....:)

My dad was a logger and relied on high powered CB's to call for help if someone got hurt on the job way up in the mountains. One time a guy, a cat skinner, rolled off the side of the pioneer road he was punching in and the cat, bull dozer, slid off the bank and he was trapped...his leg was cut off from the track of the cat. Dad packed his leg and others packed him to a "POINT" where the cb worked and called for help. Dad said you would be surprised how heavy a leg weighs. Yuck.

I still carry one. They are still in high demand for the fire service. All of our firefighters carry one, and all the surrounding depts except for the city dept. They are higher tech now though haha.

I had a pager back in the day. Kept it clipped to my belt all day long. I remember keeping a pocket full of change for the pay phones.

I remember taking it to the next level with an ATT combination credit card / telephone card. It had two sets of numbers embossed on it. I could go to any payphone, enter a string of numbers long enough to be missile launch codes, and make a call without having a pocket full of change.

I worked for the local Bell Telephone company back in 70's here in the Northwest. Of course, they had no competition at the time as the industry hadn't been deregulated. The had a product called the Teltone. It was the first pager I ever saw.

WARNING!!! THREAD DRIFT!!!!

I never had the chance to meet Governor Ray, but many of my friends did, my dad and mom as well. I can say unequivocably that she was the best governor our lovely state ever had. Brilliant woman, very personable. She used to bake the WSP Cadets who were guarding the governors mansion cookies, and bring them hot cocoa and coffee when the weather turned cold. Personally.

One of my favorite stories of her was about her farm on Fox Island. One year she raised pigs, and named each of them for a member of the local press. Well, butchering time came along, and she had some of each ground into sausage. She had the sausage served at a press corps meeting, and labeled each of the plates of meat with the name of the pig it came from.

They do not make them like her anymore......

Back in the '80s, King of Tonga came to Japan and was very enamored of the car phone in the limo he was using. Wanted to buy a similar car with phone to take back to Tonga. Someone had to explain to him that the phone would not work in Tonga, at the time, because there was no cell phone coverage there...

Yep, had one for a while. Worked in a truck shop and was on-call for break downs 24/7. The boss had one too and unfortunately both had the same phone number. Man, I got tired of that thing going off at 2:00 or 3:00 am when his wife was looking for him.

Reminds me of an old joke.
A man and his young son are in line at the store. Right in front of them is an extremely large woman. The woman's pager goes off and the boy screams "Look out Dad! She's backing up!"

I pay LESS to have a cell phone, than the $10/month I used to pay for my pager.

But then, it's a prepaid cell phone. Minutes are good for 365 days. As long as I buy more minutes, before 365 days pass, I can roll over my previous years' unused minutes.

I spend $25 to $50 a year. The phone cost $35, including shipping to me.

It's STILL better than a pager, and still cheaper, too.
