Ammo panic calming down or supply picking up?

Long time lurker here, first time poster.

I just thought I would give a heads up on my experience with getting 22 lr ammo.

Since January I have been hovering around 500 rounds of 22 lr. So I have been slowly trying to up my stash size.

Back in mid January, someone posted on these forums that Bass Pro shops was taking backorders on the phone with an estimated ship date of 2/14. So I placed an order for 10 boxes of 500 rds of Federal Champion at around .04 cents a round.

2/14 came and went and I received no order shipment detail, so I called Bass Pro. Of course it was too good to be true, they said my backorder had pushed out and based on updates from Federal, they gave me a new estimated ship date of late June.

I told them to hold my backorder but essentially abandoned hope. Today, I was blown away when out of the blue I got a shipment notice of the ammo. I even called them to confirm because I thought it was a mistake.

So there was several reason I made this new thread (none of them involving gloating or bragging):

1) If you backordered from Bass Pro, hang in there because your order could be coming soon.

2) Ammo panic could be dying down or people could be getting their fill of ammo, because Bass Pro customer service person told me a lot of customers who ordered 20+ boxes of 500 rds of LR had been cancelling their orders (which might have pushed my order up sooner).

3) Ammo suppliers are hopefully catching up somewhat with demand.

I just came from Bass Pro here in Grapevine TX, shelves were empty like a grocery store before a blizzard. Guy at the counter said they hardly ever get any in anymore and when they do its gone in minutes.

They are bare here also. Would be nice to have supply back! One store has there in the back. So when they sell a rifle or pistol, and the customer ask for ammo they have it. My 2 boxes of 325 rounds each were only acquired when I bought the 15-22 MOE.

I don't think it is getting better because I can't walk in to any LGS, or Walmart to buy any ammo, and let's not get into buying online for some crazy price, or having to sit at my computer for hours to buy a box of ammo.

When I can walk into Hoffman's and pick up a case or two or three or four of Federal Champions or Blazer for $170/case, I'll consider things are back to normal. Not until. :)

Have to agree with Major. Seems to actually be getting worse, at least hete in CT.

I think it depends on where you live. Here in Alvin, texas i havnt seen ammo in weeks. I just stock up in 12 gauge and make slugs. If you look online you can get lucky and find places that havnt been ravaged. Do not use key words when searching the web for ammo.

I haven't bothered to look at either Cabela's or Hoffman's in the past six weeks. Waste of gasoline and time. I've got more than enough to last me through the end of the year.

I actually think its getting worse. I see less ammo even coming up on gunbot this week. LGSs have next to nothing anymore. Cabelas...nothing, Sportsman Guide....nothing. Natchez...nothing. Even the ridiculously priced inventory is becoming scarce. I really find it hard to believe that CCI is running 24/7. I just don't believe it given the complete lack of 22lr ammo at any price in the market. If it was scarce we would see it at elevated prices the market can bear. I haven't even seen a case up for sale on gunbot this week.

Maybe certain folk have got sick of the situation that gunbot can crate and are no longer posting their inventory.

FWIW my buddy walked into a Walmart the other day and bough 9mm with no visible panic going on in the store. The "shortage" depends on where you live, but maybe more so on your state of mind.;)

I was at Gander Mountain this morning, arrived a few minutes before opening, there was a line like it was Walmart on Black Friday - doors opened and the rush began ... to the "limited" ammo section. As I was checking out I saw a guy with 3 boxes of CCI Tactical 22LR I asked how much it was and his answer reveals everything...

"I don't know and I don't care"

They still had a number of ARs and MP15-22s when I left but no more CCI Tactical...

I walk into Walmart and see cobwebs on the ammo shelves.

They ARE running full tilt. The problem is guys who used to buy a couple of 100-round boxes a month have started buying by the case. Add to that an all time high for sales of firearms, especially .22s, and it doesn't take long to delete a supply.

The smart shooter has been buying by the case for months, if not years, and so is not affected as much by the shortage - they've had a good stock all along and can ride out the current buying hysteria. Same deal for those who have been building an inventory by buying on a regular basis more than they need to shoot
that day.

I can shoot for the rest of the year on what I bought last October, because I never let my supply fall below a set amount. This goes for all my ammo. My carry ammo is not allowed to drop below a set amount and when my practice ammo gets low, I spend an afternoon reloading. Reloading supplies are bought with the same philosophy as loaded ammo.

No improvement in SE Harris County Texas as yet. Just got back from Wally world in Deer Park and even the exotic stuff is starting to get hard to find.

I walked into Walmart today and looked around and there is nothing. I mean the shelves were bare as a hooker's bottom on Saturday night. I went into another gun shop yesterday and they asked ME if I had any .22 Long Rifle I would be willing to sell because the locals know I am pretty well prepared when it comes to ammo. I have plenty but its nice to know if I need money if I go broke (always a week away from there) I can get some quick money quickly. If I do I will sell my Winchester Match .22 and my CCI Green Tag that I bought a while back on sale. I looked at the tag and saw $3.95 on the Winchester. Ahh the good old days! Today though I finally got out and started casting again despite the cold. I didn't stay out too long because it made me too sore and it was cold but I have 75 #358156 HP's that I will size tomorrow and maybe get some loaded this weekend. I plan on casting these and other bullets at least once a week if I can to get as many bullets as I can in both .308 and various .38 and .357 bullets. I have thousands of primers so I am good there for now and got more powder recently and brass is not a problem. I am hoping if I have some extra money come in (ha ha) that I can get a long barreled .357 revolver like a Blackhawk or a Highway Patrolman for deer season.

So we have quite a few members here who seem to be well stocked with ammo and yet I keep reading that they are in the store and looking to buy.:confused::confused: I know America is still a relatively free country, but somehow I'm missing the point.

I think our old history lessons and life learned is paying off just great don't you ? :D
