Gun cleaning supply storage?

Any one have a good idea on how to store that kind of stuff cleanning roods brushes snakes patches and so on.. I'm using a three tray fishing tacle box right now and would like something better but can't think of a better way. I have a extra small 3 draw Craftsmen tool box it's a better box but really don't think I would gain much.. Not looking for something to take along with me to the range just something i can work from home.. George

gun cleaning supply storage

I purchased, from harbor freight, a chest that sits on my work bench. It has a large opening at the top with a lid that I use for cleaning rods, Tipton jags in a plastic case of different sizes I purchased from Midway and along with that other brushes such as nylon and bronze brushes in a similar case for different calibers. I use it for bore light and mini maglight or anything you want to store. Also, there are six small drawers and four large drawers for storage. The chest runs about $80.00 on sale. It is made out of wood and I usually use Scott's liquid gold spray polish on a soft rage to polish the wood once a month and wipe it off with a clean dry cloth. It preserves the wood and gives it a lasting shine. The drawers and top shelf are lined with with felt so you won't damage the items stored in the drawers. Great buy and I store most of my gunsmithing items in the drawers.

I just use a the large tray with handle that comes as the top tray in a tool box and then a small Rubbermaid open rectangle box.

The rods lay in the open handle tray along with small bottles, patches jags etc. Large bottle and bags of stuff in the box. Old plastic medicine jars hold jags, bore brushes, mops etc.
 
When I lived "up north" I had a nice gun room in my basement, probably at least 50 sq. ft. When I moved south I found that, in my area, 99%+ of the houses don't have them, so I turned a walk-in closet (with much protest from the wife) in to a gun room. It's only about 35 sq. ft. with a very tiny shelf to work on. About a year ago I bought an eleven drawer tool chest (item #67421) from Harbor Freight. They normally sell it for $199.99, but if you watch for coupons, (American Rifleman, Popular Mechanics, etc. or you can sign up to get them online) about twice a year they have them for $149.99. I buy silverware trays at the $ store & use them to help organize the drawers. This is next to my work bench in the garage & I keep a large folded beach towel on the bench to work on / clean guns. I also keep much of my ammo., targets, etc. in the larger drawers. The bottom cabinet is great for my handgun rest, qt. bottle of Hoppe's, long gun cases, holsters & etc. (I still keep the leather in the gun room in the house.) Just sayin' what I did.
 
Amazon had the big Plano gun toolbox on sale for $25 a while back so I grabbed one of those.
 
I wish I was better organized. Seems like I just pile stuff on multiple shelves and then play hide and seek when I need something. The only thing that saves me is I have a gunshow kit that I'm religious about keeping together. My basement has enough room so I keep cleaning rods in an old coffee can as well as hammers, pliers etc and then I use a couple different size plastic storage boxes that stack well.
 
I bought a plastic 4 drawer plastic storage thing at Wal-Mart I keep my bore brushes, jags, brass and nylon brushes in the drawers. I have a metal cabinet next to the bench that stores the patches and cleaning solvents as well as reloading dies, scales etc. I use a screw driver holder that came with a set of long lost drivers attached to peg board over the bench store my cleaning rods. I tend to want to keep my hobby stuff stored separate but close to my bench.
 
Single tray Plano tackle box works for me. Enough spaces in the tray for separate areas for solvent and oil, swatches, and brushes and mops for 22, 9, 40, 45, and 12/20. The lower area comfortably holds three different size cleaning rods, an old bar-top towel, cleaning mat, a larger bag of mops, large piece of soft cloth I cut from an old shirt, and a silicone towel. $10 from Dicks, money well-spent.

That's what I'm using now and have for the past 30 years a Plano tackle box but I have the 3 tray fold out.. My Plano has runneth over with 30 years of this and that gun stuff. I keep all cleaners and oils out on a shelf. I have to paw through it trying to find what I need.. But your right it worked great for some time.. I think I'm just at the point now ,older that I get enjoyment in all aspects of the hobby if I'm trying to find a better storage idea I'm shooting, if I'm cleaning my guns I'm shooting, if I'm just looking at my stuff I'm shooting.. kinda like what people say about fishing. If I'm tying flies I'm fishing..Thank you for you input! I feel better now I'm not alown in using a tackle box.. heck may even just get a better tackle box. just have to see the right one.. George
 
Right now, everything is scattered on top of my work bench, awaiting a better solution....
 
I had a big plastic tool box, that I converted to gun cleaning and tools. I figured would be nice to take to the camp, but now I am just looking to make a small cleaning kit for the camp.

It woks good on floor next to my chair, but I have also knocked it around alot stepping over it.

One of the tool chests made for going on top of another chest would be good. You don't need a heavy duty, though I hate buy Chinese ****.

Maybe I'll build a small bookcase type shelf, and but that on it.
 
Guess I am old school..I was brought up to store gun cleaning supplies in a old metal fishing tackle box..I have numerous small ones, that are most likely antiques...
I also use metal ammo cans for assorted goodies..
I like the idea of having portable containers for cleaning supplies..Sometimes, you need to take the supplies to the weapon, not the reverse..
 
I looking at putting together a small kit for transport, with just a few things. Patches, chemicals, rod, jags. I don't need to have my hollow tip screw drivers and punches with me. Ya if something go wrong you can use those things. But a multiscrew driver will work for lots of stuff.

I like ammo cans too. But I am converting over to the plastic ones. No sharp edges to rip or gauge.
 
My wife gave me a really cool box with a lift out tray and slat mounts for a rifle. There are drawers and plenty of storage under the lift out tray. I'd is made of wood and has a nice mahogany finish. I have a pic of it somewhere if I can find it I'll post it up.
 
I have about 7 or 8 LONG cleaning rods that I store on the inside of a steel closet door (made a wooden bracket to hold them) in my workshop. The cleaning supplies like brushes, jags, picks, tweezers, gun specific hollow ground screwdrivers, etc. go in a Craftsman tool box and the solvents & chemicals go in a steel closet in my shop. That's about it.
