Hello all.

Trying to date a Model 57’s year of manufacture. Serial #N692011. Trying to figure if it is a C&R. Hopefully somebody can tell me.

Thanks.

Is there a particular reason you wanted it to be a C & R? I remember when I first got my collectors FFL I was always looking for 50 + year old guns.

Thanks for the reply. I’m hoping it was so it could be sent to Ca. Being exempt on the ass 9 DOJ Handgun Roster.

I feel for you and totally understand. I am in CA and I have both a Type 1 and type 3 FFL.

Hang in there until tomorrow. I don't do any retail but I'll call my friend who runs a gun store and try to find out how they handle this. I'll PM you. I know they will just enter guns like your Model 57 in the DROS system and they're approved almost without question - and that's the DOJ registration system. I've seen a few kicked back but not many. There were some dealers also making mods to convert to single action, which are legal, some kind of trick with the trigger mechanism.

Is there always a Design Change dash # stamped after the model number on the Yoke/Frame area? This particular revolver has the serial number and Mod. 57, with no dash stamped under the serial number.

I don't have great news. I visited my local expert this morning and we discussed it.

This is what I understood it to be although it's complicated. It can be done as a private party transfer if the registered owner goes to an FFL and fills out the proper paperwork with state driver's license, then it is sent to your local FFL. You would need to contact your local FFL to make sure they are willing to do it. The local FFL then fills it out as a private transfer with documentation. it's a matter of everybody agreeing to this and they are on the same page. If you could take possession of the gun out of state and bring it in to your local FFL, that would be OK too. For example, people who move here, guns are exempt from the approved list.

If the gun goes into the DROS system as a normal sale, the model number won't be listed in the database so the transaction can't be completed.

Wish I had better news. FYI model 57's would have to have any S serial number or an N number under about 300,000 to be eligible for C and R, in which case they are exempt.
