Snake in the yard!

Agreed, looks like a common bull snake and are completely harmless. They love frogs and rodents.
Saw a couple of Pygmy Rattlers around our place this week, but nothing dangerous.

The pygmy rattler IS dangerous, out of all proportion to its size.

Some also underestimate the potency of the massasauga..

I was checkin' cows one spring and me and my horse stumbled into a wad of rattlers what had just come out of their den.

Boy that horse could buck, but I told him "buck all you want, ol' hoss, I ain't a comin off today!"

Sonoran Gopher Snake. There was a big one at Motezuma's Castle when my late wife and I were there in 2008. He just wanted to cross the path. Somebody went running back to the ranger station screaming "SNAKE!!":rolleyes: while I stood there to keep the curious and dumb at bay. The ranger got very confused when I spoke in my English accent and said not to panic because it was just a Gopher Snake. The ranger looked and agreed (with raised eyebrows at me) and then cleared the folk so our guy could cross. As he did he came to my side of the "corridor" as I was taking pictures. Sure enough everybody else shuffled back except me. The snake just cruised by and ignored me like I knew he would.

Way cool!!:D:D

he herp lady said it was a gopher snake. When we took him out on the desert in a pillow case, we heard rattlers all around us. Very distinctive sound. We didn't take him very far out; thought it was prudent to return to home base. The rattlers come out in force around here in the spring!

John you and your lovely wife are better folk than I would have been. ONE rattle:eek::eek::eek: would have me throwing that pillow case as far as I could and Mr. bull snake would just have to work his way free from there.

If a gopher snake bites you in the web of your hand between thumb and index finger, the upper teeth leave a mark very closely resembling a horseshoe, a mark a friend wore for some time, after attempting to snatch one... That's a handsome specimen!

Bareback Even!

I think I'd rather ride Iggy's swayback through a snakepile than throw a saddle over a gal known as "The Herp Lady"... :)

Grenades and flamethrowers. Thats what that needs, grenades and flamethrowers!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Good-looking critter, and definitely good to have around. I won't kill even a venomous snake unless it's his derriere or mine, and that hasn't been the case for over fifty years despite all the time I've spent outdoors. We have a live-and-let-live agreement.

That tangle of rattlers looks like the kind of mating cluster, to put it politely, that many snakes do. I've seen it with garter snakes, and it's a hell of a thing to watch.

I once had a similar size non-poisonious snake get into my house! I did not want to kill the snake, but my late wife saw it. I simply told the snake "if i don't show your dead A** to my wife, I will have to move out of this house!" I did the deed, showed her the dead snake, but she did not sleep a wink that night!

There is just something about women and snakes, your wife excluded!

While I admit to being a bit put-off by them I never intentionally harm them. Heres one we found last Summer with my Son and Grands.

The thin green ones are extremely cool. Those are grass snakes, right? I don't think we have those in California, or at least not in my area.

Iggy, that is a spectacular photo. I am impressed that you delayed your retreat long enough to get out the camera and record it.

In line with the principles I laid out above, I would not have tried to eliminate the theoretical threat in that mass. But I sure would have beat feet to get out of the area!

By the time that ol hoss quit buckin' we was 1/4 mile away.

We went back later with a camera and a shot gun and some .22 rifles.
We have had enough horses, calves, and dogs bit to be happy to reduce the population a bit.
