SNAKES - NOT COLTS

The average snake can't 10mph and be able to strike 1/2 its body length. The average human can hit 18mph and that is without being scared by a snake. If you wear leather boots and loose denim pants and check where you gonna stick your hands the odds of being bitten by a snake are really low.

The majority of snake bites in the US occur when people try to handle snakes, not when snakes try to handle people

About time for the rattlesnakes around here to den up.

But, that brings me to an interesting thought. Say what you want about global warming, this is the first time I have even known this part of the country to make it to Oct without a frost and one isn't protected until the middle of Oct. Unreal. People's tomatoes are still going. But, then a mountain lake about 20 miles from here had 33" of snow a week ago. We are at almost 4000' and that lake is at 5700

Like Steelslayer...no frost here so far...was 90 2 days ago...gonna be the same tomorrow..the house is at 4200 ft. ...there was a little snow on the Pryors the other day..gone by 0930. Gonna change the oil in the tractor today...drain the fuel filter...and add a little diesel additive...summer fuel you know. I saw a fair sized Bull snake yesterday. And a small rattler on the road coming up to the house. he seemed to be heading for a little rocky hill where they seem to den up

Out here in the West, Calif & Nev;

I was taught not to harm the gopher or black & white King snakes from my father,
since they eat bugs and mice that he did not want around the house or his garden & plants.

Most rattle snakes were dispatched, if near a camp or home, for the safety of the childern and hunting dogs.

A rake, sharp Hoe or shovel, was my father's favoite tool, if needed, in town.

The only snake that I will pick up, is the Army colored, "Rubber" snake, found in the south Tahoe country side, that is around 10" long.

My late father spent part of his childhood in northcentral PA. Decades later I remember him still looking over top of anything he was going to pick up off the ground to make sure there wasn't a snake there.

That's good advice in most of North America, and not just because of snakes. Various spiders and scorpions can make for a bad day, too.
