Looks like a species of May Fly.
Have two different species in this area and one looks like the picture and the other (and more common) like a large mosquito.

Yeah, looks a lot like some mayflies. About how big is it?

Looks like some kind of Ichneumon Wasp to me. The wings seem too narrow for a Mayfly.

The body is 1.5" and the tail "hairs" are another 3.5" it is long but slender and delicate.

Yes! I believe you are right, but this one does have three separate hairs out of the tail. never seen or heard of one before thanks!

That has me baffled, too. I'm wondering if this is some kind of mimic species decked out to look like an Ichneumon. Tricky girl that Mother Nature.
I was going to say that it looked like an Ammophila wasp or a type of mud dauber. Definitely a type of hymenoptera and definitely not a mayfly.
That's what my brother would have done when he was a kid!

It does like like one type. They are parasitic and have a long ovipositors that they use to lay their eggs in a host insect. Sometimes they do the same in soft bark or rotten wood.

I always heard of those referred to as tree wasps by my good ol' pop and grandaddy.
Not sure on the technical name. I never messed with them much. Just observed and moved right on along.
