One of these showed up in my garage yesterday it looks like a cross between a wasp and a dragonfly but has three long feelers or hairs out it's "rear end"
any one know what the name is? I've never seen one before.

Looks like some kind of Ichneumon Wasp to me. The wings seem too narrow for a Mayfly.

Yes! I believe you are right, but this one does have three separate hairs out of the tail. never seen or heard of one before thanks!
These things are amazing see this article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ichneumonidae
about their egglaying, boring through wood with their "tails"

That has me baffled, too. I'm wondering if this is some kind of mimic species decked out to look like an Ichneumon. Tricky girl that Mother Nature.:D

Grab hold of it and see what happens. Report back if you are still able to type.

I always heard of those referred to as tree wasps by my good ol' pop and grandaddy.

Not sure on the technical name. I never messed with them much. Just observed and moved right on along.
