I have thought about getting a vacuum fluid extractor for years, and think I am about to spring for one... anyone have any suggestions on good/bad ones?

Yes sir.

Highly recommended. I've extensive use of a Mityvac 7400 Extractor, approx $70 on Amazon:

Amazon.com: Mityvac 7400 7.3 Liter Fluid Evacuator: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31RFGF1HlmL.@@AMEPARAM@@31RFGF1HlmL

I've performed multiple tests on my car, and proved that the extractor removes more oil from the crankcase than traditional drain. Obviously your mileage may vary, but they are a very worthwhile product that works very effectively.

Have you used this unit with synthetic oils? I noticed it has many poor reviews that the seals will not handle synthetics.. and thats all I use.... This or the pela are the two I was/am looking at however.....

Yes. BMW Synthetic 5W-30 OEM oil exclusively, over 103,000, before I sold the car. Zero issues.

Never have used an oil sucker machine. Have used a hand pump on a few inboard boats in the past. I currently drain it in to a pan and have a 10 gal plastic barrel with a screw on large mouth lid I pour it into and when full I drag it to the local Orielys and pour it in there recycle barrel. In Texas if a retail outlet sells batteries and oil and charges the state environmental recovery fee they are required to accept old batteries and used oil from consumers. In most cases any Walmart quick lube or local Jiffy lube will accept your old oil for recycling

harbor fright has one you hook up to an air comp that worked great for sucking gear lube out of rear ends and changing oil on inboard boat motors if i recall it held 3 gallons before we had to empty it.

West marine carries pumps with 3gal. buckets and 12v. clips and they work well. Slow but well.

Yep, walmart will accept your old oil. Just use one gallon milk jugs, or buy your new oil in 5 quart containers and use those. You can also just drive around the back of the stores and nicely place the jugs next to the trash container. Its just not a problem.

As for the oil suckers, I kind of got rich back in the 1970s doing it as a favor to guys who had houseboats. Those were almost all inboards or I/Os. There was a marine shop here on the river, but to get your boat serviced you needed an appointment and they charged big bucks. There were some boats that did have large oil sumps (they used more than a car with the same engine.) There were some tricks like changing the filter but using a paint roller pan to catch the spill. The end result was a boater with a fresh oil change and he got it at his convenience at his own tie up. At the boatyard, he'd probably pay $100 for the service, I'd charge half that and had beer money for the next week or so. And I let the owner specify the brand of oil, not the bulk junk the boat yard used.

The other money maker was splicing tie up lines. Few boaters could do it themselves, and worse, every time they changed places on the dock they'd need a different line. Even if they didn't, the good soft nylon turns hard after some time out in the sun. Once you learn how, you can turn them out in a few minutes per eye.

Back to oil. Disposal methods have become more PC. Back in the day we'd just water a fence line to prevent weeds from growing. Now they'd want to bury you under the jail.

Default Hmmmmmm, never knew.

Never knew this was "old" technology. My 2011 Range Rover doesn't even have a oil pan drain plug. (No oil dipstick, either, but that's another story.). Thought it was a scam to have only dealer changes.

Good info, folks; might now invest in a new "tool."

Be safe.

I have one that's identical to the Pela 650 shown above. Bought it to suck the oil out of my Sea Ray's 5.0

Thing works great, I started using on the cars, you still end up dropping the filters though.

I have an electric 12v automotive fuel pump( in-line type) hooked to a long piece of metal brake line( small enough to go through the dipstick tube). Very slow but works fine. I've used it on boats and crawlers.
