I had to make a trip to Little Rock recently and had the opportunity to stop by the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History and take a few pictures. I grew up in Little Rock and had driven by it a zillion times but had never stopped until this week.
A little background; The museum is located in the historic Arsenal Tower Building of the Little Rock Arsenal which was once part of a major military installation just south of downtown Little Rock. One of Little Rock's oldest surviving structures, it was built in 1840 as part of a frontier military post to protect Arkansans from Indian attack. It witnessed pivotal exchanges between Federal and Confederate forces during the Civil War. The building originally housed weapons, munitions, cannons, cannonballs, and gunpowder. In 1868, the Arsenal Tower Building was converted into housing for officers and their families. In 1879, Captain Arthur MacArthur was stationed in Little Rock at the arsenal and on January 26, 1880, Douglas MacArthur was born in this building.
In 1892 the military post was turned into Little Rock's first public park and all of the structures except the Arsenal Tower Building were either moved or destroyed.
I found the museum very interesting and if in the Little Rock area this is definitely worth putting on your list of places to visit. One of the most interesting artifacts in the museum was one of General MacArthur's officers caps. I just never realized all the insignia on it was embroidered.
