Speaking of Army Cooks, ya gotta love James Garner.

Sounds realistic. While in East Africa we had an enlisted club, an NCO club and an Officers club. If you were E5 or E6 you could belong to either enlisted or NCO but not both. I joined NCO because it was nicer and every once in a I got a chance to dance with one of the wives.
Every once in a while I'd sneak back to the enlisted because it was "looser" and more fun. I got chased out a few times. Complimenting the food didn't help!

I'm not sure where he is on our favorite Amendment. He may not be with us. Anybody know?

You should hear James tell the story about road rage when he was in his 70's and some young guy handing him his arse when he thought he was still young and tough.
I thought I would never stop laughing---stories you have to tell just because they are funny.
Blessings

I got to work in the kitchen from time to time... Does it count doing K.P?

I don't care what anyone says, sometimes you could get into the fresh baked cookies, or I sometimes liked having to clean up the big cooking pans, especially the ones that have those nice big left over hunks of meat...Life would sure have been easier if they would have given me a sharp knife to cut out the eyes of potatoes, instead of trying to do it with a table knife.

Getting off duty, and looking like you had just fell into the slop bucket!!!!!:eek::eek:

From the movie "Tank" if I recall correctly?

Oh, I see Ringo beat me to it. Why am I not surprised??:D:D

Yes sir its from Tank. I only beat you to it because your working and I aint---yet. :D

Ib also thought about adding some Sam Elliott-CSM Plumley, as well as some from Gunny Hartman (R.Lee Ermey, but dont know how the upper mgmt might think? :D

The company I was stationed with in Germany was right alongside Battalion Headquarters, it was a trucking company in a little town called Russelsheim. We had an award winning mess hall run by a genious of a mess sgt. You coud not eat better on your own unless you were married to Julia Child. We always had guys from other areas coming in on a regular basis, lots of officers. Every meal was excellent and nothing like any meal I ever ate while in the Army traveling around to other bases. He was supposed to be married to a German gal and had connections with local produce and meats.
For the better part of my service time there I lived off base with seperate rations, etc. added into my paycheck. I still ate nearly every breakfast in the messhall, probably paying for one every now and then depending who was watching the sign in book, best damn breakfast I ever ate. Fresh eggs and taters, chipped beef made from local pastrami, his sausage country gravy was good as any I ever ate, fresh bisquits...he was a master at his craft.

I recall 2 really good Mess Sargent's, One was an Army E9 he invited our 8 man unit to share breakfast with them every morning. The Army unit was an engineer unit. The eggs were powdered the bacon was canned, the corned beef hash was made from canned beef and canned potato's But it all tasted fresh. It beat the heck out of c-rations. This was in Vietnam in a field kitchen.

The mass hall was on the Sac side of Kadana AB Japan in 1969. The food was amazing. The majority of the people assign to this wing were TDY from other SAC bases in the US. The mess Sargent had posted a letter on the bulletin board promising the best food prepared by dedicated people for the men away from home and supporting the fighting men in Viet Nam. Our wing was flying ARC light bombing missions around the clock.

Good food in the chow hall makes a bad base just a bit better. I was at a couple of state side base were the cooks burned the hot water .

Best mess hall for me was in Udorn Thailand. They really layed out a great meal for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My favorite meal was Shrimp Creole day. Goodness gracious.

I saw it at the theater too. I dont remember it making a lot of money but, while it was there--I paid to see it three times. Ive always been a big James Garner fan.
