What's Better than a Great Potato Chip?
Ok, Let's "lighten" it up a bit.
I've had lobster in Maine, Philly cheesesteak sandwiches in Philadelphia, crab-cakes in Baltimore, Aurelios's pizza in Chicago, char broiled Oysters in NOLA, carne adovada in NM, chimichangas in Tucson, breaded pork tenderloins in Indiana, brisket in about everywhere and on and on.
But IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER AND MORE INSTANTANEOUSLY SATISFYING THAN A GREAT POTATO CHIP? If so let me know cause I want to know.
My current favorite is Trader Joe's Ridged Cut. It has great crunch, a huge flavor rush and it's cheap!

I like potato chips as much as the next guy, but they don't even move the needle on my instantaneously satisfying-o-meter.

I like chips, I like them a lot. These days I try to stay away from them because of the sodium. I love the salt & vinegar chips. Lays does make a reduced sodium in the regular & the ridged, my favorites are the ridged ones. Lately though I just can't find them at Wally World. Hacks me off because among the plethora of bewildering varieties that they carry, they only have two that are reduced sodium.

There is a brand called Cape Cod Kettle Cooked potato chips, and they used to make a dark russet chip...all the chips in the bag were a dark brown, like they had been slightly burned, but they tasted wonderful. I haven't been able to find them in the store for some time now, and they aren't on the Cape Cod website, so I guess they are no longer in production. Man they were good! With some sharp cheddar cheese to snack on, YMMM!

Try Utz. No salt added. Walmart (at least around my parts) has them.

I think Wise are the best. However when I lived in Indiand back in the dark ages (mid 60's) we got a brand there that beat Lays hands down and if I remember correctly it was Seyfert's. However Potato chips cannot trip my W-O-W trigger. A great Rib Eye med. well with A-1 is what does it for me.

It's not a chip but I do love garlic flavored Nabisco Triscuits smeared on top with a homemade cheese spread recipe laced with Serrano peppers.

Here in the most miserable city in America (or so they say) we are in potato chip heaven. We have two chip makers that beat the heck out of any other that I have tasted.
"Old Salty's" are terrific if you like a hearty chip. Crispy and crunchy, with a little heft to them.
"Mrs. Fisher's", a chip that has been around since before my time. I remember going to the plant where they were made, and you could get a brown paper bag of "crushed". They were the small pieces that fell through the grid when the chips were being salted. Two kids could ruin their supper for two cents! Fisher's are quite similar to Old Salty's, but just a hair thicker. But, if you liked Cape Cod Dark, you would go nuts for Fisher's Dark, sold only at the plant. Comparing them to the Cape Cod Dark is like comparing--well I don't know what, but they are delicious!

A true potato chip connoisseur will know about Charles' Chips. I used to be able to have them delivered by the Charles' guy to my house every week-a 1 lb tin, which would be swapped for a full one the next week, since I and my friends would empty it every weekend. Now, you can order them online and the price has gone UP. But, with free shipping and a full 1 lb tin, how can you go wrong. Try them, you'll love them.

Chips are as good as the oil they're fried in
I worked thru the '70s & 1/2 the '80s for a co. that made a variety of chips & snacks.
There is nothing like a chip fresh & hot from the line. As they exit the fryer, they go thru the spicer/salter. Pick one up just after the spicer while it is still hot, NOTHING better.
Potatoes are potatoes, but fry oil varies greatly in taste. Peanut, canola, or cotton seed oil are all very mild flavor but most expensive. Some companies blend in palm oil for their fryer because it is about the cheapest oil there is but tastes STRONG!

I have seen Utz products here, but usually only pretzels & cheese puffs(think Cheeto). Must be a MA thing. If I were to see them I would definitely try them.

Panera Bread Company's house brand chips are delicious. Extra, extra crispy with excellent taste. You get 'em free with a sandwich.

Utz is in Hanover, Pennsylvania, not far from Baltimore. Their chips are sold in just about every food store here, and they are, hands down, the best...

There isn't much good about living in the Detroit area, with the exception of potato chips. The Better Made factory is still operating in the city. Better Made potato chips are, hands down, the best on the planet.

I have to second that as they do make the best chips and we can get them here too. I especially like their hot BBQ chips as I like the heat.
I don't know how far from Detroit they distribute them but worth buying if you can get them.

In the early 80's, Frito-Lay made a potato chip called O'Gradys. It was a very thick cut chip. I loved them and wish they would remake them. My favorite flavor was Au Gratin. Anyone else like or even remember them?

I used to love the Au Gratin chips. More recently they made a "Loaded Baked Potato" flavor that was excellent, but like everything good these days seems to be, it was dropped.

I agree a rib eye is almost perfect, but why ruin it by smothering it with "steak sauce"?

I don't know if Pringles are actually a potato chip but I sure can't eat just one, unless they mean one tube full.

Your memory is just fine! I too remember Seyferts and they were great! I think they made them in Fort Wayne and if I'm not mistaken they survived into the 80s. I also remember anther brand called Chesty but Seyferts was king.

I think my mom started my potato chip problem with Charles chips. She worked in the school cafeteria and when the Charles delivery guy came around she would sometimes buy a big tin from him. I didn't know you could still get them.

Right now I'm looking at the top of the refrigerator where I have stashed a bag of Trader Joe's ridged chips, and three bags of Cheetos.

I like Pringles too but the truth is that they are only about 40% potato. The rest is flour and other ingredients that we don't want to know about.

Does anybody remember bacon flavored Cheetos? It was quite a while back & the only place I saw them was in Arkansas. Maybe it was a test market that flopped. They were delicious.
I remember Charles Chips too. For the longest time I had one of their tins that I used to keep chips in. Finding out they are available online might not be a good thing for me.

I always associate Utz with New York City, but that's only because they used to advertise in Yankees Stadium.
You can always ask someone at Walmart. Well, not anyone, but maybe a manager.

Gone now but Paramount Potato Chips in Flint, Michigan used to make a good potato chip. They packed their chips in a foil bag and had Slim Chipply as their mascot. I think the foil bag kept their chips fresh but for some reason they went out of business.
I remember it must have been late 50's my Cub Scout pack went to their factory and watched them make their chips and got free samples too. I think those were the best chips I ever had.

My favorite is Costco's house brand Kettle chips. Very substantial and tasty. Also, they run less than $5 for a 2 pound bag, which is much cheaper than most grocery store brands.
They only downside is the chips at the very bottom of the bag are sometimes a bit oily. I place those in a large dish lined with a paper towel. After about 24 hours, the excess oil is soaked up.

Granite State Potato Chip company in Salem, NH had the best chips. Fresh from the oven, they will fill up a five gallon pail for you. Great stuff.
Actually, that should probably be fresh from the Fryolator, not the oven.
I think they went out of business around 2007. Which is probably good for my diet, but boy were they good.
