Aloha,

The new Jurassic World movie will be out soon.

After watching the previous Jurassic movies, and thinking about

dino guns, I found this:

Dinosaur Hunting Guns: Taking Down T-Rex and Other Extinct Reptiles | Outdoor Life

So, just for conversations sake,

Assuming that you are running the Jurassic Security Team.

What Guns would you have in your armory ?

What I Think I would work

Hi Cap bull pup type 12 or 10 ga semi or pump shotgun

Or maybe the 50 cal Beowulf

Ohio Ordnance H.C.A.R. Suppressed

Browning M3 50 cal dual mounted on a APC

Curious to see what you think about going up against the new

Jurassic Smart Dino

We have been led to believe in previous movies that their eye design was of a nature to pick up movement as opposed to objects. So a paint ball gun with the balls containing a rotting flesh smell might be a good escape and evasion tool.

For a carry rifle something in 6.5 mm with 160 grain RN-FMJ like the 6.5 x 54 Dutch round that was so effective at dispatching Elephants and Hippo. A modern round based on a 308 case would work out of a G-3 and make a good select fire weapon.

I'm not sure a typical shotgun slug would have the penetration needed to reach vital organs. Perhaps sabots with FMJ projectiles would. If so the high cap bull pup 12's would be a good choice.

And my final choice would be a S&W 37 with 146 wadcutters for a pain killer!

I knew I kept my Winchester model 70 .375 H&H around for some reason. My 12 ga. shotgun with an extension magazine & my .454 casull will come in handy when the yahoo scientists get their cloning ducks in order. Might be fun...I can't seem to draw a moose tag.

I remember seeing some type of 50 cal semi auto rifle that was a bull pup design. It sat on the shoulder with the action behind you, balanced by the barrel. That would be my minimum. Depleted uranium ammo would be nice.

Iran reportedly now has a 20mm version.

The classic dangerous game rifle is a .41 caliber and up double rifle, or sometimes a bolt action. The double offered a faster follow up shot, tbough large caliber semi autos were not around in the hey day of big game hunting.

Honestly, I do know which dinosaurs would eat people, how thick their skin is, how smart they are, whether they hunt in packs, etc. I do not think anyone really knows.

For convenience I would likely carry a duplicate of the CZ550 in .416 Rigby that I used to have. Mine had a Kevlar stock. All I would change is get the pretty blued steel coated with something, as I think the Jurassic was wet and damp?

I would carry a 4" Model 629 variant. I do not know how much good it would do, but it would make me feel better.

I would try to make sure I had ready access to a Heym .470 NE double rifle, probably the utilitarian Professional Hunter variant.
Outside the box choices? Russian 23mm AA guns, 14.5mm hmgs, twin 40mm Bofors mounts, quad .50s, 25mm chain guns, a 20mm Vulcan...take your pick. The old German 75mm/L70 ala a Panther tank might be of interest.

I seldom play "what if" games, but I am bored this Sunday morning, watching the rain melt the 3 feet of snow I got last week. I have studied terminal ballistics for 4 decades, and have some definite "opinions", some based on experience. It always puzzles me about shotgun capabilities. Having never hunted big game with a shotgun, I have but one experience with a slug and a deer, with dismal results. I think people feel they are more effective than they are simply because they recoil is so heavy. Many slugs are recover from small whitetails every year that failed to penetrate such a small body. The old African hunting proverb says, hunting has 2 bothers, they are bullet placement and penetration. The mighty 600 Nitro Express had a poor reputation as a killing round as it had poor penetration. The wider the projectile, the shallower the penetration in shoulder fired arms. That being said, I would give my left testicle for a 12 bore single shot British rifle to hunt with for a few years. In Africa the 12 bore rifle was considered as a medium size game gun only. Bell felt that the ideal elephant cartridge would be 30 caliber, driving a 250 grain fmj bullet at 2500 fps. Very close to a 30-06. So to play the game I would have such a rifle and load for times I had a aimed shot. And a 450 Lot for the time I am running for my life. Handguns choices would be a double action 454 Casull, they have a great reputation for penetration yet are easy to shoot, and a high capacity 9mm for the last ditch stand, knowing you are about to give that creature you are about to be eaten by, a belly full of lead to make him suffer as much as you did.

Well if we're up against a volocireptor a good pair of steel toe boots will do, maybe a baseball bat. Unlike the movies Volocireptors were about 30lbs and 5 ft long. A fit child could outrun it and they were about as smart as a your avg chicken. The Utah raptor is a different animal all together but it wasn't discovered till after the 1st move came out.

For anything else I'll take a 20mm mini gun with explosive tips and 80,000 rounds of ammo. Also I would like to be 10,000 ft up when I'm shooting it

One of the "pains" of becoming a biologist is a class called "Comparative Anatomy"==a comparison of the anatomy of different types of animals and how anatomical parts differ. "Dinosaurs" were of two types: One based on birds and one on lizards. The upright walkers were ancestors of birds. As such, they would have some relatively light bones. They would not be too hard to take down. However, birds are, literally, "bird-brained"==once the attack it is all out and non-stop. I would speculate (and that's all it is), a repeater of medium caliber==30-06, 308 and up. So, given what I have it would be my Garand or a 71 in 348.

True but some of them were rather big and all that muscle there too. I'd go for big and heavy bullets just in case. Say you run into Trex or another large dino

You guys are brave but, I aint taking any chances. For me--and since I live on the coast--id just use the fifeteen or sixteen inch guns on the Battleship Texas.

This is a Smith & Wesson forum, for pete's sake. Obviously, a K-22 Outdoorsman would suffice ... for knee-capping :D

Hint: the Outdoorsman is to slow your buddy down similar to the ubiquitous bear threads ;)
