Wendy's Chocolate Frosty-So Disappointed
So, the Radiation I am getting for my cancer is sorta burning out my throat. Some sweet soul suggested Wendy's Frosty as a swallowable treat.
Plus, the docs are all saying to pile on the pounds if I can (no one ever, ever, said that to me before).
I stopped by a Wendy's near our neighborhood, walked in, looked around and realized it had been a looooooong time since I'd been in one-like 25-30 years.
The counter lady assured me they still had the Frosty and that the recipe was unchanged. I bought two, one for me, and, to prove I ain't as stupid as I look, one for my wife. I took 'em home and we sat down for real anticipated enjoyment.
Phoooie! Awful! Not chocolate, , maybe mocha, maybe something else, but not the Frosty I recall. I first thought it was the Chemo making it taste different, but my wife, who is pretty much a chocoholic, agreed the taste was not the same as the old Frosty.
Now we did finish both of them , but the taste just wasn't good.
So, my question to all you fast food lovers is this.
Where can I get a decent chocolate shake, not too thick so I can drink it through a straw.

Fast food has gone downhill for a long time. If I were you, make your own.
Your favorite ice cream(s) some milk... Blend it up to the consistency you want. Add some fruit if you like that. Or if you have an old mom and pop type grill, they might make a good shake, hit an mis there. to pack on a little weight, add some sweetened condensed milk as an experiment.
Good luck with the chemo!

Fuddruckers, Orlando or Miami area, has excellent shakes.
So does Steak and Shake which are all over Florida.
Don't know if it's still going on, but Steak and Shake had
half off pricing between 2 and 5 p.m. and 2 and 5 a.m.
Yes, that's right 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. besides afternoon deals.
You also might give Starbuck's a chance with its mocha frappacino, extra whipped cream.
Still, as suggested, some vanilla ice cream, a bit of chocolate
and a bit of milk blended with a hand blender or regular blender. You can make it to your preferred thickness.
Also try A&W root beer with vanilla ice cream--the old Black Cow (root beer float) of Midwest fame. Gets all foamy and sudsy and changes the root beer to a different taste than you might expect. Coca Cola or Pepsi don't work.

A Frosty is chocolate milk whipped up and injected with air. Not a shake, I think it is marketed as a frozen diary treat and that it is, a frozen diary treat made from chocolate milk and air.

Rick-that's exactly it. Chocolate milkish. Weak chocolate milk.
I don't dislike chocolate milk, drink it once every decade or so, but this darn Frosty was so far from what I recalled a Frosty tasting like, I almost posted another thought on the I hate lawyers thread.

A Frosty, according to Dave Thomas' autobiography, is a mixture of chocolate and vanilla. It's sold as a "dairy dessert", as it is too thick to drink.
As for a chocolate shake, I'm partial to the chocolate malted from Sonic.

Cold Stone is awesome, too, but expensive. As others have already stated, you can make your own at home and use Hershey's chocolate to flavor vanilla ice cream to your liking. You might want to toss in a banana and chocolate flavored protein powder to add extra body, protein, and calories. I wish you speed in a full recovery.

I think all the Cold Stones are gone from this area.
That looks like one of the lecric ice cream makers. Back in another age, like the 70s, the one we had wasn't powerful enough to keep turning in the ice.
Are these more powerful?
I'm a bit out of date on some things, I guess.

***? My parents told me 'lectric' motors soured the ice cream.
We eventually got an electric one, but I think the work and anticipation of the old hand crank ones made it taste better.

White Castle used to make a pretty good chocolate shake too. Sonic also has a LOT of good shakes.

I was pretty peeved when McD's stopped making apple pies in the deep fat fryer, instead baking them into some sort of styrofoam appleish concoction.
Then I discovered KFC is making their apple pies like McD's used to.
Once a quarter, no more. Makes them taste all that much better.
Prayers for your health.

Most of the chocolate "milk" I see today is only 1% butterfat - healthier you know - but very weak on taste. That's probably the reason Frosties disappoint.

Shakes are half off after 8pm at Sonic.
Sadly, there is no Sonic here. McDonald's shakes are tolerable. Arbys Jamocha shakes are good if you have a clean Arbys and not one run by excons.

I believe Wendy's aims to disappoint with their Frosty's in an attempt to stay consistent with the rest of their food offerings...
IMO, for fast food joints, Steak and Shake is the best for shakes. Chick Filet also has a decent shake. That being said, I'd scope out a good local ice cream parlor.
Also, I wish you the best with your treatments!

I think part of the problem is faulty memory. In my experience most things are seldom as good as we remember them being. Milk Shakes, coffee, ball games, stock car races, fishing trips or old red-haired girlfriends. We always remember them being a lot nicer than they really were.
Wendy's also probably has changed to a lower fat content milk over the years. Whoever told you they haven't is probably a one year veteran employee. A year is forever to people in that business.
Best milkshakes around here are at Dairy Queen, but then I don't buy them all that often. I've never had a doctor tell me to gain weight.
May the Lord touch you with His healing hands, if that is in His will, for in the end, all healing comes from Him.

Thanks for all the Prayers and good wishes. I really appreciate them.
After Church, I just felt too low to go chasing a milk shake. Just one of those days. I am at home now, gonna put my feet up and rest a couple of hours, then see if I feel like the chase. There's a McDonalds and a DQ fairly close. (Of course, I will pick the DQ. )
I'll try to report later on the taste. I have to get one for my wife of course, so we can be sure it's a real taste, rather than the chemo influence. And because she would be really hurt if I waltzed in with a shake and didn't bring her one.
What's this false memories, CajuBass? My memory is perfect! I do remember all the great looking gals I used to date, especially the old redheaded ones. All 10s. And me, I was tall, dark and handsome. Yeah, that's it.
Well, actually, I do worry about not recalling right. So I try to challenge myself with some law issue, think it out in my mind, arguments for an against my position, etc.
Some of the folks say Chemo gives you what they call "Chemo Brain" which, I think, means a bit of confusion. I am trying real hard not to have that.
I don't know if that is real or just a reaction to the poison which is being pumped into the person.

Another idea that worked for my husband when he was going thru multiple rounds of chemo was to blend up a shake with Carnation Instant Breakfast with milk and ice cream. The extra protein in the instant breakfast stuff is a benefit when doing chemo.
Yes, your sense of taste goes wacky and yes, chemo brain is real.

Thanks, Pawngal.
I just got a call from one of the Dietitians at the VA who, among other tips, suggested the same thing. Carnation Instant Breakfast. You just confirmed what he said.
We are going to pick some up today if we go out.
Apparently the Instant Breakfast nearly duplicates Glucerna and is a fraction of the cost. Can be ingested orally or used through the PEG tube (which, of course, I rushed out and got-then got infected, then spent several days in the hospital. Oh yeah, I'm a smart one).

Yes, definitely put the Carnation Instant Breakfast powder in there, it'll help keep you fueled. I broke my jaw in college and had my mouth wired shut for 5 weeks. Awfully difficult to eat with your mouth wired shut! BTW, you do NOT want a broken jaw.
I lived off of Carnation Instant Breakfast shakes for those 5 weeks. I would blend in a banana, apple, or orange, but that's all I ate. One day, in a fit of hunger, I tried to blend in a piece of pizza. Didn't work too well, as it was too chunky to sip through my closed teeth. This was before all of these protein shakes were popular/available. That's another thing to look into putting into your shakes if you find yourself losing your appetite... Hang in there, you're in my prayers.

For fast food around here, I usually hit Sonic or Dairy Queen. You can get malts and they'll give you an extra shot of chocolate if you want. I would think that there would be a regional chain in Florida, that might be good for ice cream treats.

Besides milk shakes, which my wife prefers, you can also have as a backup Boost, the chocolate flavored one. It's high in everything you need. When cold it's not too bad nor is it too
bad warm. At the hospital, three a day was recommended.

Well, I got out with my wife and we went to the supermarket. As we left, I just happened to notice a McDonalds right next door.
We each got a large chocolate shake and came home to test it out.
My take: Not bad, much closer to how I remember the old Wendy's Frosty (except, thanks to CajunBass, we now know all my memories are false).
Not great, but not bad. Thin enough to such through the straw, distinct chocolate taste and nice and cold on my throat.
Now the best part. My wife says she agrees with the posters who say Chic Filet has the best shakes. So, after my treatment tomorrow, guess where I'm headed?
Sadly, Sue is working so I'll have to struggle through this taste test alone.
Once again, I am humbled by your prayers and good thoughts for someone you really haven't met. Thank you so much.

I tried one of their so-called shakes--about three years ago. It was like drinking Hersheys Chocolate syrup out of the can..Nothing like what it used to be. If you have a Whataburger near you--theirs used o be good. They had both--Shakes and Mlts. Shakes you could barely get some through a straw--the malts wee impossible to drink they are so thick. Sonic also sed to have some good shakes but--it been years since I last had one so dunno if they are still good or not? Same with Dairy Queen.
Do you still have any Pharmacys nearby that may still sell shakes??

I'm sorry to hear of your going through chemo and pray for the best outcome with it.
I haven't had a Wendy's frosty in years but thanks for the warning. I had one of their burger and fries the other day and wasn't so red hot either from what I remember.
My best shakes were ones I made at home in my blender with quality ingredients. We did add some malt powder to them sometimes as well.
I did love them too at the soda fountains of my youth but the best ever were at an outlet for a dairy store that was also a restaurant. When I was a wee kid Mom would sometimes take us there on payday while Dad worked his second shift in a GM plant here. We'd get the chocolate shake and be served in a glass poured out of the mixer cup which was left there for a partial refill with what was left in it. I do remember brain freeze trying to get to that cup before it melted.

Ringo, I haven't seen a Whataburger since my college days. And pharmacies with a soda fountain-never ever really saw but one, and it died in the late 60s.
I'd go to a Jamba Juice, but I have no idea where one is.

Yes, your sense of taste goes wacky and yes, chemo brain is real.

when i was in highschool(class of '91), i had a stomach virus for a few days followed by the chicken pox. i lost about 19 pounds in those 12 or 13 days. the docs had me drink carnation instant breakfast to gain the weight back. I preferred the vanilla.

Straightshooter1,
My dad just did a cycle of radiation treatment in the head and neck area the end of last month. He got mucositis, mouth sores pretty bad to where he couldn't eat and drink too much. Mucositis changes the way food tastes for a while after it goes away.
Please keep eating, drinking, and if you start to get dehydrated, don't hesitate to ask your doc to get an IV fluid. Keep, the mouth clean and moist. You can do this.
Matt

Portillo's has the best choc shake. They are based in Chicago but have stores in some other states. Also, their Italian beef is top notch.

Thanks, Matt. My mouth is sore, but I am hydrating a lot. Actually use the feeding tube to pour bottles of water in.
Yeah, the mouth is getting beat up, but I am still going.
I've never seen a Portillo's and, like Wendy's, I haven't been to an Arby's in a loooong time. Might get by there.

Everybody is different but my dad's mouth got really bad after the 6th or 7th treatment. It really got him about a week after his treatment ended. My mom made him shakes/smoothies and eventually had him drinking pedialyte. He was still dehydrated and for the last three weeks, twice a week, we've been getting hydration from the cancer center.
The last time, about 7 years ago, he got mucocitis, he ended up in the hospital from dehydration, The IVs have really helped him.
We're three weeks out from his last treatment and he says food tastes bland and some simply doesn't taste good. If we go by what happened the last time, it'll probably be about the end of July before he can taste food again. Hopefully, it's sooner.
Hopefully, you, Straightshooter1, are one of those people who don't have a rough time and this is as bad as it's going to get.
Matt
