Visiting Dallas (nothern side of town) for a few days, looking for recommendations on Gun shops or ranges that have a selection to look at maybe even rent and shoot?

I visited a long-time friend in Dallas not long ago and he took me to a place called DFW Gun Range in the northwest area of town. I couldn’t tell you how to get to there but you can find it on the internet. They have a nice indoor range and sell a large selection of firearms. They also have used guns and firearms on consignment. I almost bought a nice flat-latch Model 36 but they wouldn’t go down to what I was willing to pay.

They rent firearms including full automatic weapons that you can shoot on the indoor range. I was temped to shoot the M1928A1 Thompson.

The Bullet Trap in Plano Texas. Rents guns for you to try. Not much of a selection when it comes to buying.

Also check out the Jackson Armory. Really overpriced pieces but the place is like a museum but no gun range. Also check out in Allen Texas Cabelas gun library. There is also a gun show August 22-23 in Fort Worth.

Is worth a look. Kind of like going back 40 years in time.

That's a GOOD place to visit, especially if you're into historical firearms. You'll need to be buzzed in the door, and this is near SMU, in Snider Plaza. Dress and groom respectably.

Also, it isn't far from there to the Beretta Gallery, one of five in the world! That's in historic Highland Park Shopping Center, at Preston Rd. and Mockingbird Ln. If you look respectable enough and are polite, you may be able to get them to bring out some SO series guns from the back. Even the guns out front are often quite ornate, with beautiful wood and engraving. Or, you can just buy a spare magazine for your M-92FS 9mm, or special grips. I don't think much of the knife designs I've seen there, but the guns, clothing, decorative statuettes etc. are terrific.

They were very patient with me one day as I waffled between two Urika Gold M-391 20 ga. shotguns. And the on-site gunsmith, trained in Brescia, had me mount the gun chosen and examined me to be sure that the stock didn't need adjustment. I couldn't have asked for better help and courtesy had I been in Holland & Holland or at Purdey's.

This shopping center is in suburban Highland Park and is, I think, the original shopping center in the USA, updated over the years, but retaining its basic SW Spanish décor. The city was laid out by the same architect who designed Beverly Hills, and the homes reflect that. Drive around a little and be impressed. Be glad that it's not you who has to cut the huge lawns!

I suggest dressing in basically Old Money or preppie style. If you wear an Izod shirt or dress shirt and khaki slacks and handsewn Timberland or similar moccasins, you'll fit in. You can also enter the theater there or the restaurants and other shops without raising any eyebrows. There's a Ralph Lauren shop in that center, too. And I think there's still a Tom Thumb grocer, with a quite nice wine selection. But I think the once excellent camera store there closed some years ago. Probably a victim of digital photography. But I think there's still a UPS or similar shipping store and some nice restaurants.

If you visit the Jackson Armory (not to be confused with the long-closed Jackson Arms store) that shopping center has a restaurant named Kuby's with good German style sausage lunches and the adjoining store carries such niceties as Lindt & Sprungli's orange-filled chocolate bars. I think they also sell their meats to go, but call first, if that's an issue.

If you haven't been to a really high class gun shop, try those two.

The Bullet Trap in Plano has a nice range, but the staff are bad about answering the phone and I sensed an elitist attitude there on occasion. But they had more retail and used/consignment guns than a previous post inferred.

On W. NW Hwy., there's a big gun and pawn shop that has a lot of good new and some used guns. They can be snooty aND RUDE. I BOUGHT a BERETTA 9mm THERE, AND THE CLeRK aCTED LIKE HE WAS DOInG ME A FAVoR TO BRING OUT SEVERAL EXAMPLES TO CHOOSE FROM. Sorry: the danged Caps Lock came on. No time to correct. Someone will know the name of this store, which displays at the big Market Hall gun show, too. It's slipped my mind at the moment. I buy very few guns these days, and haven't been by there in several years.

The shop that that TS was referring to on Northwest Hwy was Bachman Pawn and Gun but it is out of business. It closed several months ago, never to open again when the elderly owner lost his lease. (BTW, I agree completely with TS about their "attitude". I never quite understood why that seems to be a not uncommon occurrence with many gun vendors.). His other comments on dealers/ranges are also accurate.

If you want a very nice Sunday Brunch ($$$) try the Cafe Pacific restaurant in the Highland Park Shopping Center.

Yes, Bachman Pawn & Gun! Didn't realize that it had closed. They did have a nice selection. And you are dead right on "attitude" in gun stores. I didn't notice that so much when we were in Jackson Armory, though. And they had some nice swords and knives, too, including a Randall Model 15, probably on consignment. Had several Patton swords, too, several in nice condition. Probably handy to have if a coyote attacks you on horseback...

I hope that I wasn't offensive to anyone in suggesting attire for Highland Park Village and the Beretta Gallery. But I've seen some guys swagger into gun stores in scruffy or "loud" tee shirts and jeans and a gimme cap and maybe a shirt with a gun on it. Just not the right dress for that store or area.

Yes, Jackson Armory is an exception to the "attitude" problem which we mentioned. They are very courteous and helpful. It is owned by a former judge, David Jackson, so you might expect that they would exhibit some class. In addition to firearms and knives of all types and vintages, they have a large library of books of interest to folks like us. And as TS mentioned, Kuby's German restaurant just a couple of blocks away is worth the visit, both to eat and to browse in the adjoining authentic German market.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! We're thinking about the DFW Gun Range or Bullet Trap tomorrow once my sister is off of work. So far we've kept busy with a few other staple Dallas area attractions.

Sorry I'm coming to the party late.

If you're up for a little drive there is an awesome gun store/range with rentals in Weatherford. Called "Lone Star Guns Gallery and Gear" off I20. It's an indoor range (important because of heat)

If you want an outdoor shooting experience there is a place called "Alpine Shooting Range" south of Ft Worth. They have lots of gun "stuff" and guns. You can shoot rifle, shotgun and pistol there.

Winchester Gun Gallery and Range on East side of Fort Worth fun because of Winchester gallery of old rifles to view.

Depends on what part of the metro-plex you're in and how far you're willing to drive. All the ones listed by others are good as well.

Gunmaster on Avenue K in Plano is another good place to shop.

Im late to the post. But, the best kept secret in the Plano/Richardson/North Dallas area is Mike's Gun Room in Richardson on Greenville at Beltline. It actually shares a parking lot with the Richardson Police Department. Mike always has a ton of Smith and Wesson revolvers and older semi auto's. He's not into the internet, so no website or email. He knows Smith and Wesson's well.

I'm glad to hear that he's still there. He had some nice model airplanes, too, but some weren't for sale. He flew OV-10's for the USMC in Vietnam, if I'm thinking of the right man.
I bought my S&W M-60-4 from him at the Market Hall show, years ago. I had to take some metal off of the end of the extractor rod with a small file before it opened right, but it was otherwise a primo piece, and remains one of my favorite guns.

Here's the deal on shooting ranges;
Frisco - nice but over priced.
Bullettrap in plano - I call it the 'wallet trap'. I don't go there anymore. They won't let you shoot reloads, lead, or just about anything but their WAAAAYYY overpriced 'range ammo'.
??? can't remember the name of the one on Mockingbird - doesn't matter - don't go there. Bad 'hood.
North Dallas - outdoor range, guaranteed to be to hot, cold, or wet.

Targetmaster - best choice: Jupiter and Miller Rd. in Garland, 18 indoor pistol lanes, 6 indoor rifle lanes. Here's the best part - one charge, $15 lets you rent and shoot EVERY gun in the place. Seriously, no limit. You will have to buy their inexpensive range ammo.

There are scores, perhaps a hundred, gun stores and pawn shops. They're everywhere.

BTW, I hear ya on the attitude. My old shooting buddy once asked "Is being a rectal orifice a requirement for working in a gun shop?"

That was back in the 90s. I think the CHL movement & women getting involved in shooting has forced most to clean up their act. But it still exists, I've found mostly in pawn shops.

Gentlemen, let me just thank you for all of your feedback! It was a quick week in Dallas, but I had a great time with my family. From Gas Monkey Bar & Grill, to the Dallas Art Museum, and The Stockyards, it was non stop. We were able to check out a few gun shops including MisterGuns, and Bullet Trap. Both had a great selection and seemed to be very friendly and helpful with addressing all of my mom's questions.

We also decided to visit the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison. For $10 entry, I was very impressed at the number and quality of planes they had on display in the 4 hangars and parked along their section of tarmac.

Ton's of things I didnt get to do, but I'll be back. Thanks again for the great suggestions!
