The bullseye shooting season is coming up soon, so I packed up two of my Model 41s to sight in at the club range in Maryland and practice a little bit. Being retired I can go when most people are working. After I got through with practice I started on my way home. On the way was a gun shop that usually I don't have the opportunity to visit because I'm on the way to get somewhere but this time I figured I had the time to stop in.

Along the back wall rack I saw a familiar outline. With my fixed eyes I could see a 41 on the tag at the distance. I asked to see the gun and indeed it was a Model 41 with a rail installed on top. I got to check the bore and it looked good. I asked what came with the gun and it had the original case and manual. The case looked pretty new and it turned out the gun was made in 2021! Apparently the gun was one the shop wanted to move because the owner gave me a significant price drop right off the bat. I couldn't pass it up and it will be following me home. The shop is in Maryland and I live in PA so it will be a couple days before my new acquisition will be coming home.

And there will then be balance in my house. This gun has a heavy 5 inch barrel, and I have another 5 inch gun and a pair of 7 inch Model 41s with muzzle brakes. This will balance the flock of Model 41s in my house.

I brought my new foundling home today. I ran a patch through the bore and it turned out bright and shiny. I ran all of my spare magazines through it and it accepted and property ejected all of my spare magazines. The finish is beautiful. It looks like this gun didn't get a lot of use. I loaded up all of the magazines and once I put the green dot on this gun I'll take it out to see how it does. Sometimes you do get lucky and stumble across something nice you weren't expecting.

I've owned two M41s; the first belonged to a buddy. When he was skint, he'd sell it to me; when flush, he'd buy it back. After 3 of these interactions, I told him the next time would be the last. His is an old one, with the long barrel and brake, and it's back in his possession.
A neighbor had one for sale, heavy barrel with an optic. I struggle with optics, so I tracked down a long, thin barrel version. That led to having a Smith bob it to 'field barrel' length, and an XS white stripe front sight. Really like the result.
Dammit, have to try to figure out how to post pictures.

Given it was 2021 production, I hope it runs okay. Maybe that's the reason it wasn't shot much and was already for sale again.

I have a newer pc model 41. Runs great. I find most 22 auto problems are related to magazines or ammo. My pc 41 likes cci mini mag and even Remington thunderbolt. I do shoot some cci standard velocity but more of the other. Remember for every reported gun with a problem there are usually many more that are fine. People report problems but are quiet when things are fine.

This is my personal practice with new 22 semi autos is: Clean and lubed. Start out with CCI 40 grain HV solids. Those guns, especially when new, need full power ammo to make them work. Then work my way down to standard velocity ammo.

I never did understand the thought process behind the necessity of running standard velocity ammo in a 41. Then complaining that it doesn’t run. I’ve ran a lot of CCI HV thru my 35 year old M41, and it still shoots great and runs perfectly.

You can’t have too many 41s. The 41 and the MP Metal are the only new Smiths I’d buy nowadays.

I hope you can post a photo of your "Bobbit" 41.

Have a spare 7-3/8" barrel; thinking of doing that.
Would like to find one of those old shorter Field barrels, but any offered for sale seem to be made of gold.

In the Dean W. Charron "My Life with Smith & Wesson" book, he writes about
the first "Field" barrels being made by cutting down existing 7-3/8" barrels.
THIS BOOK IS FORTUNATELY AVAILABLE AS AN EBOOK -OFFERED ON THIS FORUM -FOR FREE!
ABSOLUTE MUST READING FOR ANYONE ON WHO WOULD BE ON THIS FORUM.
