The Best John Wayne Tribute

In the mid 1980's, when I introduced myself to my new neighbor in a small farming village in Switzerland and he realized I was from the U.S., he got very animated and asked me into his home. He then proceeded to carry out three steamer trunks of John Wayne commemorative memorabilia and a bottle of schnaps, and spent at least an hour pouring shots and excitedly sharing his collection with me.

It surprised me that this actor, beloved in the U.S., could touch this rural foreigner so deeply.

If you didn't already know....That scene includes a tribute to his mentor and friend Harry Carey Sr. It is when the Duke reaches across and holds his right arm. That was a move/pose Harry Carey did frequently in his older westerns. You can see him do it while talking to Wayne in "The Angel And The Badman". That scene doubly gets me every time for that reason.

Thanks for bringing that scene up. I haven't seen it in years, now I'll have to find a way to add it to my collection. The one of which my son says, "Dad, it's easier to count the John Wayne movies that you don't have instead of the ones you do have,".

The final scene of The Searchers where The Duke is in the doorway, mission accomplished, turns around and walks away like only John Wayne could walk is perhaps my favorite. No lines, no acting, just that walk. Gets me every time.

Paul Fix tought him that walk and in Ths Searchers, ending scene where Duke is in the doorway, grabs arm--Dukes tribute to Harry Carey Sr. who had passed away several years earlier. Harry Carey used to grab his arm that way.
