Sorry but I was unable to decide where to post this information to learn more about this scope & mount. Hope this is the appropriate place.
A while ago I found a scope & mount for a S&W Revolver produced by Weaver but made in Japan. This combination was designed to replace the rear adjustable sight on a S&W Revolver, the scope is a 25 power. I learned today that the mount is designed for the older model revolvers because it will not fit up to a M-617-1. The distance between the screws is too long for the new round rear sights(where they were squared in front) and will not fit to it. This scope & mount was a design that would allow the rear sight to be removed and the mount attach perfectly in the two points for the rear open sight. Anyone familiar with this Weaver product and able to put a date and more information with it would be much appreciated?

It's likely 2.5 power, as in 2 1/2 power. 25x would be mighty strong for a revolver. Any handgun, really. Unless it was something really special. Like a bolt-action rifle-pistol in .22-250, or something like that, used for bench rest.

IINM there was a base that used the front sight screw on the older Smiths. It didn't work out so well. That teeny tiny little screw would shear off, or pull out, with anything other than a .22 LR. I'd advise against using that front sight screw to mount a base. You might get away with it on a rimfire for a while. Even then, I'd be worried about it shearing off that impossibly small screw.

I can't answer your question with regard to the weaver mount but I can give you some insight into another type of scope mount. Several years ago, I was looking for a M17 and found a -5 with a red dot scope mounted to the frame. The rear sight had been removed allowing for a mounting screw to be placed in the channel and it was fixed to the frame again adjacent to the crane by a clamp/set screw fixture. It was made by Burris but I'm not sure if they still make it. I prefer iron sights and had a heck of a time finding the square front end (older) type to replace the red dot.

Thank you, my mistake, I left out the period between the 2 & 5. Yep 25 power would be much more magnification than useful and this scope & mount combination is to be used on a .22LR caliber revolver. I'll check and learn whether it will fit the older Smith with the square instead of rounded front.
Appreciate the information "ordy" interesting and informative. Thank you both for the replies.
