50s-60s-70s Muscle Car Dreaming
if you could go back in time to buy just ONE muscle car
NOT to sell or invest.....just to have and drive
what would you bring back?
I would go get a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback Wimbledon White with a 289 4 speed.
All I would do to it today, is fill the wheel well with as much tire as possible, modern mufflers and tint the windows. (maybe AC unit since I live in south Texas) and cruise!
unless I win the lotto or go back in time....its only a dream!

I wish I could have afforded to keep my 1969 Road Runner hard top.
I was 21 and it was the first car I ever bought. I was single and the insurance was killing me. It was the first casualty from my single life after I got married. I still have the wife, but never had another car like that one.

I wish I still had my 1956 Chevy Nomad with the 283 'vette motor. Sadly it went down the road when I built my first house so I could get a souped up 1955 Chevy pick-up to haul materials for the house!

My '67Camero with a 327. Red convertible with a black bumblebee stripe, 70 series tires and mag wheels. My Ensignmobile. Taught my wife to drive on that thing.
They're both gone now.

I, too, would have to go back to the '50s.
A '58 Chevy Impala, 2-door hardtop, 348 w/3 deuces, 4-speed, white over turquoise out, turquoise in.
or
A '63 Chevy Impala Super Sport, 409, w/2 4s, 4-speed, white out, red in.
Be still, my heart -- it'll never happen!

I would like to go back to about 1980, I had a chance to buy a Shelby and thought that $3500.00 was too much. I do own a 64 1/2 Mustang coupe with a 260 V8.

My late oldest sister had about the third 1969 Mustang Mach I in Utah. It was painted "Indian Fire," a sort of metallic root beer color. Gorgeous. Girls looked at me when I drove it.
I'd like the same car in dark red.
There's a white '71 Mach I that lives a couple blocks from here. Nice.

1970 Dodge dart with the 318 engine. Had a guy who worked at a gas station who raced on weekends. He'd do tuneups on that dart and you'd think it was a different car. That was the last year that Dodge had the high compression engines. Frank

Not exactly a 'muscle' car....
My sis had a '68 Malibu with a 327. Maroon, black interior. That thing would RUN and was smooth as silk in every respect. Sporty and comfortable. Just having ridden in it impressed me so much I'd go back and buy the same car. You can go right up into the 460 range, displacement wise, but pure power isn't everything. It's just good to have more than you'll need right there in front of you.

As a junior in high school in 1972 I had a 69 Hemi roadrunner with a 4 speed 4:10 gear & no power steering. A lot of fun with gas at only 35 cents a gallon.

An orginal Shelby Cobra with the 289 Ford engine the early ones had.
The big block Ford engines the later cars had seemed a bit much to me. Or a Corvette with the small block Chevy engine. The cars with
the cleanest looks to me were the 65-67s and the 75-77s. The 70s
cars were somewhat down on HP but still had enough. These are more
sports car than muscle car I guess but for plain simple muscle the
plain Chevy Impala with the 409 engine would sure get your attention.

My 1962 Ford Galaxie 500 hardtop with a 405 engine and three deuces - snow white with red upholstery. Got me into a lot of situations, both good and bad. The most beautiful car I ever had.

Man, I love that Ford shifter. I love the transmission connected to it even more. I'd take a 68-69 Mustang fastback, with the 428 Super Cobra Jet, and 4 speed.

My cousin used to drag race one of these. Didn't you have problems changing plugs in this one. Something about having to raise the engine to get to the back plugs on one side?

Way back then a buddy had a 64 SS Impala with a 409 under the hood and a 4 speed in the console, it wasn't the fastest car around but it was plenty fast. Back seat had a bunch of room too. I would want one just like it.

I am lucky enough to have acquired my favorite muscle car. Maybe not a "muscle" car in the strictest sense of the word, but rather a "gentleman's hot rod", a 1965 Buick Riviera. Dad bought a new one in '65, and brought me home as a newborn in it five years later. I have wanted one all my life, since I saw pics of me next to it as a child. It was worth trading a nice '99 Corvette for this one to see the look on his face when I brought it to his house. He's 86 now. The pic of me and him in his driveway was made two weeks ago, and the small pic is of me and him at our old house in Detroit in October of '70 when I was 10 months old. This car rides like a dream, and with it's numbers matching 401 Nailhead, it's no slouch either. Torque, torque, torque! Four bucket seats, console, power everything, what's to not like? It garners attention wherever I go, plus it has only 62,000 original miles, car has never been painted or taken apart.

Back to the 1930s
Not a muscle car by definition, but I'd love to go back and bring back a 1939 Ford TudorSedan. Probably to my eye the most beautiful car ever built. I'd even leave the flathead V8 in it.

on the Bullitt car chase I always thought a split window was in the scene, but after closer inspection...my guess is a 1962.
check it out at .39 seconds. they could have at least washed it for the movie!

Changing the plugs isn't quite that bad but it does take some doing. I generally change the plugs when I set the valve lash, which requires removing the valve covers. I can replace the plugs with the valve covers installed, but removing them does give a little more room to work.
If I could have any muscle car, it would be a 427 Cobra. Otherwise, I will keep the one I have had since 1982.

Hey, that's my car!
I bought a used Chevelle, super sport 396 with an auto transmission in 1971. It was black with white vinyl top and white/black interior. I put on some nice mag wheels and bigger tires on the back and of course, Thrush glass pack mufflers.
Drove it for about three years and it was having some valve issues so I sold it.
Wish I still had it.

I live 40+ miles from Town. 95% of it Interstate. So a 4:11 or 4:56 geared, big block muscle car doesn't make a lot of sense. Even in a Fantasy scenario.
Back in the late 80's I fell into a nice deal on a very clean, mostly original ,65 Corvette Coupe. Marina blue, 327 , 4 speed, etc.
After a near fame off resto, mostly to fix chassis/brake issues, she was on the road. It didn't handle or brake very well at all. Made a lot of sweet noise when you mashed the pedal and went very fast in a straight line but stopping was something else. NOT terrible but the cop car I had at the time could beat it in a chase.
We recall these old cars through a haze of nostalgia. They really were not all that practical. Especially TODAY.
All that said....I'd happily take the 1969 Corvette coupe I had in the early 1970's. White, 350/350 hp motor, 4 speed , power brakes and steering. Only thing I'd add to my fantasy car would be original side pipe exhaust.
A 69 Z-28 would be acceptable too.

I'm not particularly satisfied with stock when it comes to cars, so I can't think of many originals I'd want. Mostly, I'd just want solid bodies and the funds to build them into what I want. For instance, a 1967-68 Shelby GT500 that I can stuff a 427 Cammer, and a few other goodies, into might be pretty cool. I have no idea how I'd do it, or keep it on the road, but still.

I have a buddy whose dad is into Fords and race cars.
He is building a 427 67 Fairlane and I believe he has an older Mustang....cant recall the model.
He told me a few years ago, that the cars of the 60s were cheaply built. While that is a huge turn off, my goal is to only have a good looking cruiser that I am able to work on.
todays muscle cars are far better built in all areas to include price....but it lacks one huge aspect in my book.....I like the look of muscle cars of the 60s and 70s. It takes me back.

64 Dodge Polara 500. 383 4 spd. and buckets seats. Black with red interior. First child was on the way so it went away. Got a 66 Impala. Then in 69 this brown Pontiac Catilina Ventura came my way. 428 m40 trans power and air. White interior. When radial tires came along in about 70-71 that old Indian came alive. What a car.

Had a '71 Malibu SS with a 396 which I wouldn't mind having back. But I'd really like to have a '71 Charger with a 440.

A 1969 ZL1 Camaro would be pretty high on the list, don't fit well in the Cobra.

That's easy, a 1967 Corvette convertible, 327cid-350hp small block, M21 4 spd, 3.73 posi, factory side pipes, tinted glass. First thing I bought when I got out of the Army in '71. Still have it, haven't found one I like better.

67 is my favorite Vette! Pics!!!!!!!
I had an opportunity to buy a clean 72 Vette (dull yellow) with rally rims for 2500$. Had a 350 auto IIRC. It was in the early 90s, the kid needed money for college and I had zero funding as a young cop.

Wow I don't think anybody has mentioned the Pontiac GTO! My '65 was the first new car I ever bought. Ordered it through the dealership with the options I wanted and it was amazing. The '65 was the best year for the GTO I firmly believe. The '64 was the first year and was a little crude. The '66 was starting to get a little fat and by the later years of the series they were badly overweight and over-civilized.

That's pretty much how I see the goat line as well.
A '65 GTO would make a nice toy, I've had a buttload of classic musclecars in the past, I would like one more.

Growing up in a Pontiac family I'd go for a '64 GTO with the Tri-Power carb set-up, limited slip and a few more goodies.

That is a tough one...
I have a small part of my dreams parked in the garage now... wanted the 67 GT500 Shelby... and I only got so close on my budget... 1967 mustang fastback... 289 4 bbl... 5 speed... 4 wheel disc brakes and a shortened 9 inch w/ 3.70 gears and a Detroit locker... custom suspension set up for road racing... sitting for over a decade on flat tires... parked when son was born... he wants it now... so I told him, get it running and guess what happens... I am fine with him taking over my dream - most parents would... besides it is parked next to my 2013 grabber blue BOSS 302... not the dream... but a better car...

I posted above about my 68 Olds 442 If I could get that car back I would but it's gone. Currently I have an 86 Corvette sitting in my garage,,, okay, been there done that! I'll still take my 68 back!
Now one car that has always caught my attention and if I ever were to win the lottery big big time I would then purchase a car of my dreams.....
A Ford GT40
Always loved this car!
