I went to a party last Sunday and many of the younger generation were wearing wrist watches that looked like "boat anchors"! I do know that in recent times the watch industry has increased their diameters and weights quite a bit, but some of them can almost be used as wall clocks!

I asked one of the young men at the party if I could look at his watch and he gladly took it off and handed it to me. I laid it over my wrist and was even more blown away by the heavy weight than I was by the enormous size. When I asked how he could wear this thing all day he just said - "everybody has these now" and after a while it doesn't bother you. Some of thee watches actually weigh more than some of the light weight carry guns we have!

I do realize that watches are many times fashion statements but some of these things are just ridiculous! Many of the young women there were wearing watches that only a few years ago would be considered a large mens watch and were actually larger than the watch I wear.

I was very amused by this and a bit taken back by how far people will go in being "hip". No matter what they tell me, I just can't believe these huge mega watches (mini wall clocks if you will) are comfortable to wear all day and while they are all the rage now I would not be surprised if the watch industry started going backwards to smaller, lighter and more practical.

My watch is about 30 years old and measures 36mm which when I purchased it was considered a large mens watch. Today - I guess it would now be considered a women's version.

I think it would make a good cartoon caption.

Skinny jeans, underwear showing, "wife beater" t shirt, and huge wrist watch.

Any chance you asked him if it was more than just a wrist watch? Many watches today are miniature smart phones. They wirelessly connect to your phone so that you can talk, txt, search without having to take the phone out of your pocket. Then there are sport watches that keep track of your heart rate, calories burned, steps walked, oh and they are also smart watches

LOL!! This is just a fad & will fade.I see most kids not wearing watches..they just use their phone! Can you imagine what's going to happen when the fad ends...so many "huge" watches & nobody will want them!

The large watch wearing phenomena is well known in the military circles - especially amongst pilots and the spec ops types and wanna-bees. There was an old saying about it...the larger the watch, the smaller the (fill in the blank). By the way, the same thing was said about belt knives as well.

Now I've never been accused of being a bad man, but all I ever wore was a cheap old Timex watch, and carried a small Swiss Army Knife and a Buck 112. Just sayin'....

Regards,

Dave

Styles come, and styles go. As long as someone is behaving themselves, I try to ignore things that aren't important to me. Having turned 18 in 1969, I remember the "hair wars" back then, so when I see a man bun now, I just move along.

Those large G-shock watches are very popular with field troops in the Middle East, maybe they're just following the military trends, which has been the case for millenia.

They can be relatively inexpensive, and are very durable.

Just as our friends in the gun business whip up new pistols that do nothing better than what we have had for the last 100 years, the watch guys need something new to sell so we have the wall-clock size wrist watches that are neither practical nor particularly stylish, IMO - but they are undoubtedly easy and cheap to manufacture. ;)

At least the gun guys have given us some smaller, lighter pistols with a little horsepower that actually do serve some purpose. The new full-sized stuff... not so much. :)

It was not a phone but did have a removable screw-on cover to protect the winding crown. The cover itself was about the size of a sewing thimble! I suppose that even though it is not classified as a weapon, anyone hit in the head with this thing would have s serious problem. He told me it was the largest production watch made - can't verify that but I believed him!

I tried searching "largest production watch" but didn't get anything concrete. Lots of watches with some in the half million dollar range

Bring back the Casio Digital Plastic watches!! My watch has no numbers just little lines?
No hard thinking of "what time is it" :)

I really like some of the big wristwatches but I have one real problem with all of them. My wrists are really small. I put one of those watches on and they all look ridiculous. I wanted a new watch recently and I had a very hard time finding a small watch that looked good.

Fortunately, I rarely wear the watch since my retirement. I don't usually care what time it is or what day of the week. The only time I care is when I'm off on a cruise or other vacation or if I have an appointment to keep. Otherwise I really don't care at all about the date, day or time.

I saw some watches that were about 3" or so at a militaria show a while back. They were worn on the outside of the jacket sleeve by pilots. Seems like they were British WW 2. They were cool.
