Strange Dog Names
A friend has gotten a new dog and has given it strange name. The name over the door on the dog house is: Phydeaux.
How many others have encountered strange names for dogs or other pets?
Oh, by the way, the dog's name is pronounced - Fido!

A neighbor has one of those little long-haired dogs; looks like a dustmop missing its handle, a Maltese or something. His name is Walter.

So it's not so much the name as it is the spelling.
Everyone I know with dogs those dogs have typical dog names. The only strange one I can remember was my aunt naming their Rottweiler Channel. As in the perfume name.
My one friend named his dog Mike. Don't know if that's considered strange

Fido isn't a strange name, heard it all my life
Fido (1941 – June 9, 1958) was an Italian street dog that came to public attention in 1943 because of his demonstration of unwavering loyalty to his dead master. Fido was written about in many Italian and international magazines and newspapers, appeared in newsreels throughout Italy, and was bestowed several honors, including a public statue erected in his honor

Our beagle mix was named ' Stroh's' after the beer that I drank at the time. We took a picture of him sitting on a case of Stroh's and sent it to the brewery and they sent us all kinds of stuff for our home bar.

We had a dog named Fabio. He was a rescue and his previous owner named him Astro. But being a Bichon "Astro" really didn't work. We wanted something that ended in "O" to help with the re-naming. The Mrs came up with Fabio. It was kind of embarrassing when he got out and I had to run around the neighborhood calling his name.
I had a neighbor that gave all his females boy names, and vice-versa. That was weird.

Usually I let my dogs name themselves. Used to have a beagle named Sally. About three months after her first litter she didn't know "Sally" anymore. Answered to Fat Mama.
Was given a Chesapeake named Ivy ("because she's the color of Godiva chocolate"). Two years later she answered to Big Brown Dog.
Current dog came with a collar that said "Jeannie" on it. She doesn't look like a "Jeannie". She was "Nameless Yeller Dog" for about a week, and then she and I agreed that she was the most Worthless dog in the world, so her name's Worthless.

Years ago we had a poodle named "Kimo". He was named after the Kimo theater in Albuquerque. I don't recall who came up with that idea.

A good friend's grandmother had named her pets after WWII Nazi generals. I don't think that it gets more strange than that.

I don't think dogs care much what you call them. Mine always came no matter what I called them, they pretty much understood anything I tried to tell them especially if you mentioned eat or food!

When my GSP Maggie died (just a month before), we picked up a male GSP that the pound called "Haggerd" because he was picked up wandering and all beat up (he'd been fighting coyotes). Wife suggested "Hagrid". I thought that's a nice Teutonic name for a German hunter. The next day, I looked it up and found it was the name of the BIG, GENTLE, DARK giant in Harry Potter. At over 100 pounds, he has lived up to his name.
Before his diet!

My wife let our kids name our shepherd, Hallie (as in Halloween). We got another one a year later and I named him Roscoe.
We had sheepdogs when I was a kid and the neighbors got one of the pups and named him Shadow Clint Eastwood. Really rolls off the tongue!

One of my son's poossies is named "High Commander Lord Griswold", but he answers to Grizz. The second one they just call Baby Dog.
A buddy named his pit bull Cheddar, because he is proud to live in Wisconsin, even though he is originally from Chicago. He still roots for the Bears over the Packers, though.
My favorite red merle Aussie I named Tusker. Don't ask me where I got the name; it just came to me.

My mother had an English Springer Spaniel named "Mica". My grandfather had a Black Lab he called "Folly", when my boy Chocolate Lab picked me while I was buying his sister "Hershey", he was given the name "Folly", also. We have a recent rescue, a Beagle Dachshund, which we have named "Gretl". Nothing strange, just uncommon names.

Good name.
My two Goldens were Bonnie and Beau, wonderful dogs. Then came an English Setter named Clyde, who lived to the ripe old age of 13.
Sam, the English Setter, now 13, has been a great hunter.
Never had difficulty naming a dog. Certain names just seem to fit their personality.
Just saying those names out loud brings a tear to my eye of dog memories.......special retrieves, forgiveness on their part for training screwups on my part, that shredded magazine, chewed slipper, that special lick on the hand.

One of my son's teachers named her Golden Retriever pup "Cat." (Actually her second grade son named the dog "cat" because he wanted at cat instead of a dog).
So the dog is a cat.

Whatever it is already has a name. If you have only one of them, it doesn't need another name. Dog is sufficient.

A friend of mine had a puppy who unfortunately considered urinating in the house his sacred duty. He forthwith named him Liberace.
I asked him why -
His reply "If you remember, Liberace was the pianist."

Fifty-plus years ago I had a little fox terrier mix I named Ralph, because with my bass voice if I called "Ralph!" it sounded like a huge dog barking.
My present dog, a rat terrier, weighed ten and a half pounds when he adopted me as a rescue. I named him Moose. Just seemed a good idea at the time.
My stepdaughter and her husband have a Shih Tzu mix named Jagger. And many years ago some friends of my sister had a cat named Nosioptar. Which is "rat poison" spelled backward.

Years ago I had picked out a female Wire Hair terrier. The lady said you don't want her, take him, pointing at a male he's so pretty. I replied, not only do I want the female, but you just named her Ugly. Ugly was a wonderful loyal companion who lived to a ripe old age.

Fifteen years ago I got two purebred mini dachshunds, short red coats. First one got the registered name Junior G Man because of his fearless personality, we call him Junior. He is laying in his bed looking at me right now.
The second ones registered name was Little Big Man. It took a couple weeks to find an everyday short name for him. One day he was still very young and was out in the back yard with my kids playing. The back door was open and I was inside when I heard this loud puppy hurt crying sound getting louder and louder as Little Big Man came shrieking into the house and ran into his crate where he laid crying and licking his paw. I went over and examined him, he had a sticker jammed into a paw pad, he had a bobo. Yep, you guessed it. His name was Bobo from that day on. Happiest little dog I ever had. His tail seemed to never stop wagging. Rip Bobo. You are missed.

My current owner is named Frankie, after Sinatra, because he has absolutely beautiful blue eyes, and he sings sometimes (boxer/husky mix with a nice howl).
We call him moose though, not sure why as he only weighs about 50lbs. He's a bed hog though.

Hmm... Drumming up fond memories of past (or passed) buddies with this thread...
Had cat named Mr. Jones
A rabbit named Thumper
A Cocker Spaniel named Beauregard
A dog named B.W. Berry
Have a cat named Squish. Used be be Squash, because she's orange, but the name somehow morphed.
And the one that takes the cake...
Had a registered Cocker Spaniel named Hugo Harvey Wallbanger (wait for it...) The 3rd! Yep there were two previous to him.
Thanks for the memories!

The one in my avatar is Hooch. That was is name when I acquired him (long story). He don't even like beer. I very affectionately refer to him as "worthless hound" cause he is so spoiled. hardcase60

Damn, I never heard that Gregg Palmer had passed away in 2015 In Big Jake he was the machete-wielding "Fatty" and was the guy who tried robbing him at the beginning of: The Shootist.

Rest in Peace Gregg.

My favorite red merle Aussie I named Tusker. Don't ask me where I got the name; it just came to me.

A friend of mine in England, named his dog: Lord Noodles.

Our Westie-Chihuaua mix is named Mandy - After my wife's great aunt Amanda who outlived six husbands. A sextuple widow, I guess? I never knew the circumstances. Maybe she was just too much of a woman. Or an expert poisoner. After the first three, I have to wonder why #4 tied the knot. The sole picture we have shows her posed with, apparently, a much older man. Maybe she liked guys who were about ready to die anyway.

I'm a thinkin' y'all spend way too much effort on the dog's name. My dalmatian was named Spot. As he got a little older, it changed to Ole Spot. He answered to both, or to any mention of the word "walk". Worked for us.

He also had a cat named General Sterling Pryce in True Grit, the original version.
