Hiking Through and Over the Paw Paw Tunnel

A pic of the tunnel and waterfall would make for a great puzzle.

Thanks for sharing your slice of paradise. It reminds me of a few places I've been.

You gotta see the rock slides in Bavaria. I was always a little concerned driving threw those mountains. It sucks when you have to take an alternative route. It can take hours.

The Paw Paw Tunnel

I have to ask.

Is the Paw Paw Tunnel named after the little known, but extremely delicious, fruit that grows on trees in the eastern part of the country?

Or is it named for someone's grandpaw?

I'm serious here, okay?

And matter of fact, after some online searching, I see the tunnel will be closed indefinitely, effective June 2 (today). So I reckon it's a good thing you got your hike in already.

The park's website says the area will be undergoing rock scaling...removing rock from the tunnel's interior to lessen the chance of injuries from falling rock. It states that they expect full reopening by late July, although there may be delays due to weather.

My searching, by the way, still didn't tell me how the tunnel got its name.

I keep editing this post, the more I look at the video. That's some beautiful country, isn't it? I envy you your access to it. I have to drive about 80-90 miles to get up into the North Carolina mountains.

It's named after the fruit. Which is also the name of the town we live in.
The local Indians named the fruit way back when.

The tunnel closing is the reason we got the video when we did.
What I've heard was that you could still go through the tunnel during the closure but the only way back's gonna be to turn around and go back the way you came.
They're gonna detour the towpath traffic, both hikers and bikers, over the tunnel on "Tunnel Hill Trail."

They've recently built a connector path to the Towpath that runs right here to town.
Sunday, we're planning on a bike down the C&O Canal Towpath. We can start from our back door.

Thanks for the video, Snubby. So, when are you opening a B&B for us forum members so that we can come and visit and take in the scenery? :D
When we bring our own rubbed sage and buffalo burgers!
That'd actually be pretty cool. There's a rather large camping area. Wouldn't it be cool if a bunch of forum members took it over and we had a massive Bison burger cook out after taking a nice long hike to admire all the cool stuff I've found while exploring the trails in the area?
If it's warm enough, we can go on a tubing trip down the local river.
We could get it all on video and share it with the forum.

Been a while since I've enjoyed a "Snubbyfan Productions" video.
Luv it, Snubby. Just Awesome.

I have yet to go on any good hikes this year.
I have, however, been beating up on my body a bit doing other areobic activities.
Like furniture moving and digging garden beds.

Well that sounds like good exercise.

Stay tuned I have some hikes planned for this year.
