El Dorado with John Wayne and Robert Michum
I have to laugh that I’m watching this movie for umpteenth millionth time times 10.
It is one of my favorite Wayne flicks along with the one that starred Ricky Nelson.
Now something finally dawned on me that never clicked before,
1. Wayne and Mitchum are using Winchester’s that were probably The Rifleman’s rifles Big lever rings) since that show went off the air in 1963, movie was made in 1966. So these rifles just became extra prop rifles
2. Paul Fix aka Micah is now playing the town doctor instead of the sheriff?
3. The best one yet that I never never knew is that Johnny Crawford aka Mark McCain plays Luke McDonald in this picture. He’s part of the family that has the problems with the Ed Asner crowd.
4. Another blast from the past is the Bartender who is played by John Mitchum brother of Robert Mitchum, who later on in life becomes Dirty Harrys partner Frank DiGeorgio.
Just some interesting old movie facts!

John Wayne used a large lever ring Winchester in many movies starting with Stagecoach in 1939. I believe I read in American Rifleman were it sold for around $112,000 a few years ago.

Duke liked the large lever ring Winchester as did Chuck Connors. Duke had a few in his personal collection and I think Connors had one-for each of his sons-including one he used in The Rifleman.
And yup-some neat alikes but-Paul Fix always was a Westerns stalwart (character actor) long before duke ever came along. Also-Fix taught Duke-how to properly throw punches too.

And here he is punching a well-deserving Leo Gordon in the mouth

And Ben Johnson's version of throwing one hell of a punch!

While I prefer Rio Bravo with Angie Dickinson and Ricky Nelson, I too have watched El Dorado a million times.
Robert Mitchum: "Did we have a fight or something?"
John Wayne: "Or something."

Don’t forget “Rio Lobo”, the third of the cookie-cutter plot which included (wait for it).... Christopher Mitchum. Who also portrayed one of the Duke’s two sons in “Big Jake”, the other being Wayne’s actual son, Patrick, and a grandson played by his youngest son, Ethan, who is said to be named after the Duke’s character in “The Searchers.”
My favorite character of all three was Arthur Hunnicutt in “El Dorado”.

I just watched it too. Did u notice the Winchester that Joey shot Cole Thorton [Wayne] with was a Plastic job. Maybe a Daisy. Before He throws it in the River you catch a reflection of the Buttstock and you can see the deep grain and shiny surface. I had a Daisy just like it the 60's.

You are mistaking "RIO BRAVO" with "ELDORADO". Ricky Nelson was in RIO BRAVO while James Caan played the second young banana in ELDORADO.
The Duke started carrying the round loop M1892 in 1939 in the movie STAGECOACH and carried it in numerous western oaters from then on.
It was in Rio Bravo, Eldorado, Rio Lobo, Big Jake, etal.............
The RIFLEMAN began in 1958 or 59 and his rifle had a bigger more circular loop, unlike Waynes ovate loop.

Yep. My favorite too. Stumpy and his dynamite.
Walter Brennan was always great as a supporting actor. He got Oscars for it too, although earlier in his career.

Sacrilege on a gun forum, but my favorite Duke movie had no firearms. The Quiet Man, made even better with Maureen O'Hara and Barry Fitzgerald.

...I like El Dorado...
...some don't know that the excellent paintings shown in the introduction to the movie were done by artist Olaf Wieghorst...who also played Swede Larsen...the gunsmith in the movie...

Yup, I too think The Quiet Man is the Duke's best film.

Just my opinion, but the Duke’s best performances were in The Quiet Man, The Searchers and The Shootist. They can switch position by time of day.

Liberty Valance??? That's the toughest man south of the Picketwire..........next to me.
That's My favorite Wayne film. The Searchers a very close second. Stagecoach, The Shootist, True Grit, Big Jim McLain, McLintock, The Angel and the Badman, The Quiet Man all get an honorable mention

There was one revolver in "The Quiet Man". It was a early model Webley that was kept in the tavern. Used to signal the start of a match or fight

Next time you watch ELDORADO. Near the end of the film, after the big fight. Mitchum and Hunnicutt are talking. As the camera switches back and forth, notice Mitchum's boot. In one scene it has a large dark spot (or hole) on the bottom then in the next scene the spot is gone and then back again.

John Wayne was a great character actor playing himself. In my opinion his last film, The Shootist was his best acting. That movie stunned me with how good he was acting. Although he was acting like a hardened man dying of cancer, which he was. That said... Big Jake gets my favorite JW movie vote. He has some stinkers too, but with the crowd here I'll forget about them.

Well, I’ll take a shot. “The Conqueror” and “The Gesiha and the Barbarian” were not his finest efforts. He was never so good as when he was on a horse or opposite Maureen O’Hara.

One thing in this movie you don’t see too much of, Bull is carrying what appears to be a Revolving Rifle.
You don’t see them used that much, or have I been missing them?
Next time I watch I’ll be looking for that hole in Mitcums boot!

I felt sorry for the guy talking to Barry Fitzgerald in "The Quiet Man", when Barry was talking to him and spit on him during his excitement. Neither one of them seemed to miss a beat with their acting when that happened.

John Wayne has long been my favorite actor, and while there are some of his movies that don't quite hit the mark, I can generally watch and enjoy anything with him in it. My wife doesn't understand how I can watch the same movies over and over again, whereas when she's seen a movie once, that's enough for her. Yet she will watch "I Love Lucy" repeatedly.
My all time favorite JW movie is "The Quiet Man" but his westerns are a close second. His war movies are good too...my personal favorites are "In Harm's Way" and "Flying Tigers."

When Bette Davis slapped Errol Flynn in: The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex--that was a very real one too. Flynn wanted to kill her. They had had a bad rivalry for years started by a jealous Davis. Davis thought he couldn't act-till many years later long after he was dead-she watched one of his old movies (I don't recall which she said?) and she said: "He really could act."

Speaking of The Flying Tigers-Duke as Sq leader-was actually portraying Sq leader David Lee "Tex" Hill. I actually met the B.Gen at a gun show in San Antonio about 14 years ago-and have his autograph on a pix with him next to his "tiger."

John Wayne was a very impatient shooting instructor in El Dorado. He has James Caan shoot at a cactus using his famous Colt, he misses, and Duke says, "'Fraid it's hopeless.", then they go buy him the shotgun. Just one shot!!
My all time favorite guy in the film is Christopher George as Nels McClowd". The slick two gun packing gunslinger who Duke respected but killed anyway. He was also great in Chisum. My favorite guy in that movie followed by Glen Corbett as Pat Garrett.

When the dust settles.
When the dog is done.
After The fat lady has done an encore.
Yellow Ribbon is my favorite John Wayne movie.

Love John Wayne westerns but it has always bugged me that he made no real attempt to be historically correct in some. Rio Lobo took place directly after the Civil War but he shows up in town with his Peacemaker and Wichester. Same with The Comancheros that takes place way before (10-15 years) the Civil War. This is just 2 that stand out.

.Another vote for "The Quiet Man" here. The Duke was good but Barry made the movie. Got to like Ward Bond too.

I wasn’t a big fan of “Sons of Katie Elder”, but it was based on the true story of the five Marlowe brothers in Graham, Texas, near my hometown.
The book “The Fighting Marlowes” was published back in the 90s and is a great account of the story.
Unfortunately, the story did not end as well for the Marlowes as it did the Elders.

I always found it interesting that John Wayne and Howard Hawks essentially made the same movie three times with Rio Bravo, El Dorado and Rio Lobo.

Its part of the ""Cav trlogy"" but my least favorite of the three. Fort Apache and Rio Grande are co-equals. What I dislike about Yellow Ribbon-is the over-acting. BTW-though I KNOW it wouldn't have been meant of part of the Cavalry Trilogy-and would have been before the trilogy took place. Id rather have had The Horse Soldiers as part of the trilogy instead of Yellow Ribbon. If it had been meant of a Cav Quad-whatever it could be called? THEN and only then would I have had it been part of the unofficial series. And yes-I fully know that H.S. story had nothing to do with the other. Just saying.

I love it. The ONLY time-a thrice made movie worked-and very well at that-and with the same lead star in the starring role too.

Not the only time.
You have.
"Yojimbo"
"A Fistful Of Dollars"
"Last Man Standing"
It's the same story in all of them.
Edit. Well, not with the same lead star.

AH! My favourite piece of dialogue, in one of my favourite movies followed by one of my favourite gun action in a movie.
They didn't have John Wayne in this movie. But they did have the man who shot him from the back.
