One of my all time favorite guitarists was the late Toy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band. He didn't use a pick. They mixed rock, blues, country, and even jazz. And they had a flute player who was great. Dickie Betts is in on this one, too.

Wes Montgomery, Mark Knoffler, Lindsey Buckingham, Pat Simmons, Albert Collins, Albert King, Jeff Beck, Derek Trucks, John Mayer are just some off the top of my head.

Give me a bit and I could come up with a lot more.

I stopped using picks in the early 80's as I was tired of dropping or losing them.

PS: Billy Gibbons uses a coin and Phil Keaggy used a washer.

Whatever works

I was just reading about and watching Albert king videos yesterday. I was watching Lonnie Mack videos and one thing led to another. Rusty, have you seen this big Billy Gibbons book? I don't play guitar, but ZZ Top is one of, if not, my favorite band. Book shows his combo guitar and car collection. And like this shows they meld together.

I saw an interview with Billy Gibbons once and he said that he'll use a Peso when he wants to give his guitar more of a Mexican sound.

A long time ago, Paul Gilbert often used a Makita cordless drill with a pick in the chuck. The crowds loved it.

One time he was head banging and his hair got caught and the drill ran up his hair and knocked him to the floor. His guitar tech ran over and had to cut the drill out of his now beehive.

He never let his hair get too long after that.
