The Brandy Alexander
This afternoon I mixed up a little different cocktail from what I normally drink. It’s called the “Brandy Alexander” and is perhaps most famous as being the choice drink of the Beatles’s John Lennon:
It’s made from between one and two parts of brandy, one parts of creme de cacao (chocolate liqueur), and one parts of cow’s cream and garnished with a dash of nutmeg. Not too far away from a White Russian in concept. It’s smooth, not too sweet, and pretty good honestly. I can see John (or anyone) packing these down. I’ve been trying many various classic cocktails and while this won’t replace my dry martinis, it’s not bad and would make a great nightcap or cooler weather drink.

They called them.....
They called them 'milkshakes' because they went down so easily. That picture must be from the "Lost Weekend". May Ping and Harry Nilsson are there. Ringo liked them, too.

If you are a martini man, try a negroni. Since this year is the 100th anniversary of its invention, and I read about it, this summer I’ve had a couple.
Not as good as a martini, to my taste, but I much prefer it to something like a brandy alexander.

I made some a month or so back. Pretty good. The bitter and earthy Campari is quite an acquired taste, but the Negroni is very refreshing and I very much believe it stimulates the appetite. Great before dinner drink.

Anybody for a pink squirrel or a grasshopper?
It being too political, I'd stay away from a black
Russian.
But wait until my own brand, the Willy Wonka
double Dutch chocolate vodka hits the market.

Back in my old bartending days we made Alexanders (and Squirrels, and Grasshoppers, etc.) with ice cream. It was an after dinner chocolate shake with a kick.

The only brandy that I can handle is a good Cognac, Hennessy VSOP preferred. The aging in oak barrels seems to strip away the copper sulfate (which gives me monstrous headaches) used in pest control of vinifera. When dad was still on this earth, I'd buy a bottle every Christmas for the two of us. The bottle never survived a Christmas eve. A good time was always had.

Brandy is good for sipping, fruitcakes and plum puddings but makes a terrible song.
