Thanksgiving Green Bean Casserole
Does anyone truly like green bean casserole?
It seems like it is considered a Thanksgiving tradition; we have always had it with our holiday meals. But after some thought, it really seems like a useless dish. I feel as if it is only liked because of the junk food flavor - that salty mushroom soup taste. What do y'all think, useless dish or American tradition?

Not useless.
Some even have it at other times of the year. Mom would make it growing up many times a year. Still does in fact she will have it at many family Sunday dinners.

Mrs Chad and I both like it, so I’ll be making my version for Thanksgiving. Her brother will be joining us for the feast and he won’t touch it with a 10’ pole! About the only green veggie he’ll eat is broccoli, so I’ll steam some for him.
I start by partially cooking French cut green beans. I use low sodium cream of mushroom soup, but make up for it by using cream instead of milk. I also fry up a bunch of sliced fresh mushrooms and throw them in. French’s fried onions are OK, but their little 6 oz tubs are expensive. For a few bucks more, Costco has 24 oz bags of sliced crispy hatch chilies and they’re awesome! I also add a copious amount of fresh ground black pepper.
I’d love to make the stuffing like my MIL and add fresh oysters, but the Mrs. and he brother won’t eat it. Sad that some folks don’t know what’s good.

The Lady that invented the recipe has passed away. I posted about this sometime ago and got flak about it.
I like green beans and make them fresh, not with some can of soup and a can of fried onions.
Whatever floats your boat

I always liked the green bean casserole, but for the last several years my wife has made roasted Brussels sprouts instead; they're very good and go well with the other things.

I'll pass. I like my green beans when they are still green in color. Not in some mishmash of light brown goop.
Fortunately the infamous casserole has never appeared at any of my Thanksgiving dinners.

I like it too. But I also like my green beans straight up, with a bit of jalapeno and some bacon.

I'm also a green bean casserole eater too. We have it at least 6-12 times a year, not just for holidays/Thanksgiving. My wife makes it with cream of chicken soup instead, because she doesn't like mushrooms.

My favorite way is battered and fried fresh green beans out of the garden.
Of course, there’s no garden in November so I’ll eat the casserole.

Green bean casserole is a staple at Thanksgiving on the same exalted pedestal as the cranberry "mold" that you "splork" out of the can onto the dish-it ain't thanksgiving without them

No green bean casserole this year. Tradition here is turkey dressing with black walnuts in it! Grandpas Mac and cheese for the grand daughter is a holiday treat. Left overs go home!!!

We had an old Italian neighbor when I was growing up. My dad was a great gardener (previous farmer ) and he got some seeds to grow Italian green beans from our neighbor.
Way better flavor, but hard to find in stores. Only place I’ve found them is in Walmart canned, but still good.

At our house the GB casserole is not a Thanksgiving dinner staple, but my wife occasionally makes it. If it shows up on the table Thursday, I wouldn't object. I like it. I also prefer the canned cranberry jelly over cranberries any other way. And pumpkin pie to the chocolate cake my wife is planning to serve this week.

Yum yum, canned green beans and canned sodium mushrooms.
You said it
It's not real hard to use fresh means make some cream of mushroom soup (scratch) and add some onions, but then we make cranberry sauce from whole fresh cranberries that is real hard as well, Boil some water add sugar and berries,

The young'uns in this house won't touch GBC. They view it as unnecessary filler that takes away room for the stars of the show..
I'm with them.

Nothing like a plate overloaded with sides of GBC, sweet taters w' mallow and the canned cranberry glop.
Strictly bird and stuffing for the mandatory second pass.

I do like Green bean casserole and beans about any other way too.
Re Cranberries, a few years ago we had friends from Argentina visit around Thanksgiving time. They arrived in Miami and spent a couple of days there, then rented a car to drive up to Louisiana. In Miami they saw lots of adds featuring cranberries on TV and in stores, Cranberries are not well known in Argentina so they wanted to try some, they stopped in a store and bought a bag of fresh cranberries to snack on during the drive. On arrival in Thibodaux they asked me "what is so good about Cranberries, we ate some and thought they were terrible!"
I explained how they are usually prepared and we all had a good laugh about it. They did enjoy Cranberry jelly.

I love fresh green beans, but I loathe canned green beans. I do not like the casserole, but others seem to. So, I usually take a bite or two and tell them it was good.

My Paternal grandmother was a "Bush/Busch". Seems one spelling was originally Catholic and one was Protestant. Anyway, her family was Austrian Protestants all the way back to Martin Luther. Green Bean Casserole was a family tradition. To show/prove they were not Catholic, they put meat in it and served it on Fridays; to prove they weren't Jewish, they used ham or bacon.

If you have not tried homemade might I suggest the Good Eats recipe. No canned mushroom soup in this one. It's worth the effort.

After reading all y'alls comments, I figure green bean casserole is not useless, but it sure deserves to be made better. Perhaps fresh green beans, fresh mushrooms, and a real French style white sauce is the key. With white pepper and Tabasco. Heck, I might even put oysters in it.
I guess the real issue is with the Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. I may have lost my taste for it. I'd rather have a tin of sardines sprayed with M-Pro 7.

We've been on a Brussel's sprouts kick=every couple of nights. I trim and halve them, then toss with olive oil and sea salt (good raw that way!), then roast at 350 for 15-20 minutes, then top with a raspberry vinagrarette, Lemon juice, olive oil and parmesan, add bacon and a little bleu cheese.
