Default Anyone still uses Zippo lighters?

I have a few Zippos and really like them. But with this one I have a confession to make; I bought the gold plated luxury diamond design Zippo solely because it reminded me of my Weatherby Mark V checkering as well as the diamond grip insert. First time it came out of the box, never filled, never lit.

Should be the official Weatherby lighter

Old school luxury, style and elegance!

One of my regrets for stopping smoking: Can’t pull out that classic Zippo anymore.

That’s a beauty, Jorge!

Default Zippo

Quit smoking 35 or so years ago but I still have a Zippo laying around somewhere. Remember seeing it in a drawer, just don't remember which one.

Like that satisfying click sound it makes.

Now I gotta go look for it!

Yes - have a brass one in my pocket right now. For several years I never passed up a Zippo at garage/estate sales, so needless to say I have a bunch - mostly the cheap brushed finish ones, but a few have various military markings. Still looking for one with the S&W logo on it, but I guess they don't make one like that.

Zippo has made at least a half dozen different lighters with S&W logos. Look on eBay.

I have one that was given to my granddad. It is leather wrapped and has his initials on it. I don't smoke, but this is a nice remembrance of my granddad.

I have used and collected Zippo's for years. I dont have as near as many as I used to and primarily focus my collecting on Unit marked ones.

I've got a few.

I put butane inserts in the one's that I use regularly.

The soft flame butane's my regular daily carry.

It's good for lighting cigars in windless conditions.

Otherwise, I'll use my custom Zippo with the double torch insert.

The original inserts are stored unused and without flints, in the original boxes.

I quit smoking almost 50 years ago. My dad always carried a zippo and I did also. My daughter gave me one with my initials on it several years ago and I carry it when I go hunting. If I have to build a fire, I want some help.

I too gave up cigars a few years ago. My Zippo was a gift from a sailor off the USS Dwight D Eisenhower. It is very cool. Still a very good fire maker.

Several years ago I was in a small college town bar. When I returned from the restroom my buddy was showing me the Zippo he was just given. After I left the table a guy came over and said he had quit smoking and was giving his Zippo away. On the back was a date. It was the day he returned from Korea (during the war). He said who evers birthday was closest to that date would get the lighter. My buddy was only off by a couple years and was the closest. He showed me the lighter and the date on the back was my birthday and year exactly. I didn't get the lighter but always found it interesting that the date was exact. If I could of just held it another minute.

I carried a Zippo for many years, ever since High School. I scratched my initials on it with a vibra-pen, a crude job. I stopped smoking over 40 years ago, don't know where it is but I probably still have that Zippo.

I carried one for many years, as did my dad. He had one given as a gift from co-workers in the early ‘70’s that I sent back to zippo for rework. They tightened it up, replaced the wick and packing and sent it back with a pack of flints at no cost. Functioned as new.

I smoked from the time I was 13 until I was 30. Always had at least one Zippo. Towards the end there I had a modest collection. I always meant to keep them but over the 46 years they have all somehow or other disappeared. I really don't have a use for one any more but I still regret that I have lost them all.

On a side note I despise all those butane lighters.

Yep, have lighted thousands of cigars with one over the past 18 years or so.
I have a couple that belonged to my pipe-smoking father which date to the 1950s and 1960s.

A Zippo will certainly ruin a good cigar.

I have one that belonged to my deceased younger brother, with Jimmy Carter's picture on it. It stays in my Memory Box.

Have a blessed day,

I use a Zippo daily. It's an old beat up model I bought back in junior high before I started smoking. I put it away for 20 something years and got it back out about 1 or 2 years ago and have been using it daily. Nothing fancy but a lighter that has lasted me 27 plus years is pretty good.

The older Zips seem to be a little more robust than the new ones. They just feel different. Zippo owns Case Knives, and The same different feel exists with the new Case knives. There's also a quality difference between the old and new production knives.

OP.... nice Zippo.
Had near 150 at one time.
Never smoked just collected Zippo's.
Made some decent change on Ebay when they
were pulling good bucks.

Mainly bought advertisers ...Oil companies, Coke, Disney..etc..
Some had great colors.
Likely still have 30-40....

I had one years ago and don't remember what happened to it.

My Dad always carried one.

Funny thing...we recently befriended a guy who owns a farm in southern NY. He has been a Zippo employee for many years. The plant is just over the border in PA.

This is one of those items that I can relate to by the smell. I never used one, but my uncle did and I can recall the smell of one being lit. Can't describe it, but you know it instantly. Like the mimeograph ink from when I was in grade school. Sorry for the drift.

I think they changed the fluid formula somewhere in the past. It has always been NAPTHA but I think they used to add an aromatic to it.

Trivia Time. The Number 1 collectors of Zippos and the ones that have written most of the collector books on them are Japanese.

I had an old and good friend who died a few years ago; like many people who were never in the military, he was fascinated by that life. As a lifelong smoker (not what killed him) and Zippo man, he started collecting Zippo's used in Vietnam by various troops when eBay was first taking off, and things were cheaper and less likely to be a knockoff. He studied the subject thoroughly, and knew what to look for. He had a nice little collection in a neat display case, and I would have liked to have bought it from the estate, but his surviving brother is possibly the cheapest person who's ever lived, so I didn't even try. Ce la vie.

Here's one I bought and keep in his memory, since we saw the Stones together in 1972 at the Charlotte NC coliseum:

It's funny, the takeoff of the whole collecting thing has probably kept Zippo in business.

I smoked and carried lighters from the time I was 11 or 12 years old. Finally quit at age 33.

I remember the red legs from old lighters leaking in my pockets.

Opening them by squeezing between my thumb and fingers.

Carrying extra flint inside the bottom of them.

I had several Zippo lighters but I remember an old Ronson best.

The one below could be its twin.

Thanks for the memories!

I am not a smoker but I have a couple of Zippos. The Parkerized one was a promotional item from the movie Pearl Harbor. And of course I have the original boxes and papers for both of them :-)

I carry one mainly because I camp a lot...and the one I carry has the S&W logo...so they are out there..

That said I equipped my lighter with a Z-plus butane insert...no more leaching fuel..

My dad was a Zippo man, always carried in his dungarees watch pocket.

I despise the smell of cigarettes but the smell of a zippo cant take me back to childhood.

Also, recall him getting the occasional rash on his leg when it would leak fluid on his leg.

Realistically, if I were a smoker today, I would probably carry one of the cheap BIC-type butane lighters instead of a Zippo, and not worry about losing it. Back when my wife smoked she always had a BIC in her purse. While I was working in the Persian Gulf area in the early 80s, I bought her a fairly expensive gold-plated Butane lighter in one of the Souks, some European make. It took her about two weeks to lose it.

I got a few that are only valuable to me. I've been thinking about giving one away but I'm not sure if he really appreciates the story.

That's sad when you think about it.

65 years ago when I was invincible and in flight training I learned from my instructor who flew P-51’s off Iwo Jima in WWII and in Korea, to fill my Zippo with 100 Octane when we drained the fuel sumps under the wings when doing the preflight. Saved a lot of money and was kind of “cool” to light up with it when having a cigarette and beer in the bar at the end of the day.
That came to an end when advancing to jets because JP-4 didn’t work.
I will have to find it and keep it on hand for emergencies .

I used to have a few from back when I still smoked. My favorite was a coated brass model that started losing the black finish. I took Dad's wire brush wheel to it and then polished it out. It developed a wonderful patina over the years. Don't have any use for one any more but would love to have that one back.

I’ve got two or three here. Don’t smoke other than a cigar or two a year. The one I really cherish is one that has my Grandfather’s signature on it. He was a truck salesman and I assume it was a promo giveaway type item. Still in its box. Pretty cool.

I’ve never smoked, but I have managed to accumulate a couple of dozen Zippo’s. Most are new in box, but I use my first Zippo, a gunmetal blue model, whenever I need a lighter. Among the collectible one’s I have a Model 19 Zippo. The Model 19 on it looks identical to my 4” 19-7 service revolver, even has the Uncle Mikes grips

I've got maybe 25 laying around. All mine are brass except for a couple.

I got the Marlboro one back in the 80's, sent in pack tops or something to the company and picked stuff from a catalog I think. It's never been used. I have a couple Marlboro money clips that came on cartons of smokes back in the day too. One's still in the package.

One of the Harley Zip's has never been used. The other was given to me by someone years ago. I switched it out for another brass Zip a couple months ago.

After being a chain smoker for about 40 years, I gave up all my Zippo lighters, and cigars, and expensive crystal ashtrays and so forth but a found memory was high school, smoking Lucky Strikes, and snapping a Zippo against the leg of your jeans to light up. Yup, me and James Dean.

Sure glad I quit. I have more money to buy S&W revolvers!

I quit smoking 40 years ago. I collected Zippo lighters from every ship I served on during 20 years in the Coast Guard I still have them, somewhere.

There was a dive bar in San Diego across the street from the Broadway pier named Bernie's. The bar was very popular with Navy and Coast Guard members and had huge glass front display curios filled to the brim with ship Zippos. That bar is long gone and I don't know what happened to the collection.

The sound of a Zippo opening, lighting and closing is as distinctive as the sound of racking a shell into a shotgun.

Had many over the years. Bought one from the souvenir shop In the USS McCain when it was in port. Still have it in the box.

I carry one on my moto for cigars. I replaced the innards with a Thunderbird butane torch. Bought several for friends. Even got the Zippo torch insert for a friend, but it has no sight glass, so IMO the Thunderbird is better since you can see if you have fuel.

This thread jogged my memory about another Zippo I have. I never smoked, but one day I found a Zippo lighter I had to have. It was a Cleveland Indians model, complete with a full color Chief Wahoo. The seal is unbroken, the price tag is still on the lighter, the lighter sits in its tray with the paperwork, the tray sits in the tin box, and the tin box is in the sleeve. Anybody who wants it will have to wait for my estate sale.

My son has collected Zippos since he was a teenager. Has well over a 100.
He also has one of the Zippo factory floor standing lighted display cases

I have never been a smoker and don't plan to start now. However, this Zippo called to me, for rather obvious reasons, so I made no effort to resist the urge to add another Smith to the stable.

I’ve never smoked but used a Zippo to light many a heat tab & C-4 for cooking C rations & boiling water. Occasionally lit off some time fuse with it as the need arose. We could wade a chest deep creek with a Zippo in your fatigue pocket and it would light fine when you waded out of the water.

Still have several around that I keep filled just in case.

I am cursed with constantly cold hands. Every winter, I always carry Zippo hand warmers and lighter. Never without the lighter year-round.

I also add a lighter every time I visit Hawaii. I don't smoke but there is something about Zippos.....so "American". A true collectors item.

And they work fine on white gas. Cheaper than lighter fluid.

I've had a Zippo since 1966. Several, actually. My current one (2013 version) has been filled once to make sure it works, and then left sitting to see how long it took the fuel to evaporate - three months. It's part of my needed tools. It's not solid steel like my 1968, but still acts like a regular Zippo.

I "Acquired" a gold inlaid Zippo from one of the people that I showed around the places and clubs in "Okie" in the 60's on one of my visits to the fun places to go and see, eat, drink and have fun at and maybe soak in a hot tub of water and get my back scrubbed down.

It was of the USS HANDCOCK but some where in my travels it got lost or traded.......... bummer.
However I did bring a few "Auzzie Hats" back home, some how. !!

Got to love those shore duty visits, where you get to meet the other half........
well, except when the Shore patrol told me to climb down from the palm tree, while knocking down coconuts, to take back to the ship, when time was up.

Just don't over fill those baby's !!
