Why do youtubers show that their guns are empty?

Only video gun guy I watch is Hickock 45 and he'll smoke some pot in his gun reviews. ;) :D

I sorta like ol’ Hickock45 but I do get tired of his thing of constantly racking of the slide of an auto pistol back and forth. Just take the mag out, lock the danged slide back, put the gun down, and be done with it! :D

I suppose his fiddling around with the gun is just his way of trying to give his viewers a look at different angles of the gun, but...

FWIW

Our Range Officer's requires the line of shooters (after the course is completed at the seven) to point the pistol down range, eject the mag, rack the slide three times, holster and secure the pistol, then place your hands behind your back.

Then the "all clear" command is given.

I learned my lesson as a kid. I was going to check an old bolt action Mossberg shotgun to see if the safety was on or not standing in the doorway of a porch facing out. The gun was pointing in a safe direction but I really didn't expect it to go off. It did. It disturbed a wasps nest over the door and they bit me around my eyes. I will check the safety manually from that point on. Just goes to show how you can not take a shot back.

I have found many YouTube videos to be very amateurish, poor camera angles, sound, poor lighting, work area not set up properly, and if someone can not follow safe gun handling practices.....

I agree, there are guys who pull corny comedy and fire large bore guns into blocks of wood to see how many blocks are penetrated. One time looking at their You Tube for a couple of minutes was enough.

Hickok45 and his son John are the only gun videos I watch. I think he repeatedly racks the semi autos just as fidgeting. I like how he always pulls the trigger on an already fired cylinder while pointed down range.

.... but I'm waiting for him to rack the slide to make sure a pistol is empty and then point it downrange without looking and pulling the trigger. It would not surprise me if it goes bang sometime.

You do realize these folks, like Hickock45, edit and post their videos themselves. This isn’t live theater.

You’ll never get to see anything that he’d find more embarrassing than funny himself. ;)

FWIW, that was the standard protocol I was taught when making safe. Remove mag. Rack slide to eject chambered round. Rack slide a few more times. Lock slide back. Visually and tactilely check to make sure the chamber was empty. Keep muzzle pointed in safe direction and finger off trigger the entire time.

The ones I really hate are where some macho guy has a girl try to shoot something they know will beat her up. The girl doesn't have a clue until she gets whacked. Those guys need a serious attitude adjustment.

I was unfortunate enough to witness this firsthand several years ago. Guy in the lane next to me let his female companion shoot a Desert Eagle. He stood behind her with a hand on her upper back to steady her. I don't know what caliber it was, but from the blast I'm assuming it was a .44 Magnum. She seemed to be able to handle it, albeit barely, but it could have gone horribly wrong.

As the father of 4 daughters that shoot, I couldn't agree more.
Some serious jerkwads out there.

You saying he would edit it out?

I’ve done some (amateur) video production myself in an earlier life.

I can pretty much guarantee you that what you see on Youtube is only a limited portion of the video he shoots. He most likely does multiple shoots of each of his videos. If anything serious or embarrassing ever happened, he’d just re-do that episode.

At least most producers would. I don’t want to impugn his character, he might be that rare individual to fess up to a screw-up so people can learn from it.

About 6 months ago forum member GF and I were set up at a gunshow in the Ky fairgrounds but it was an RK show and not National Gun Day. A difference of about 1000 tables at least. We had an end cap and a nice spread of old guy stuff. Hickok45 showed up thinking it was NGD and ended up spending most of the day bee essing with us. Fun guy and authentic. He's about 6' 8" and definitely sticks out in a crowd.

Hickock45 says unedited and I believe him. Watch the Shield EZ 9mm youtube video on youtube and Bud's guns and you will see the Sheild fail to fire/eject the last round of a mag not once but twice. Nah, Hickok is like the umpire - he calls em like he sees em.

If I made a youtube video I would include a ticker saying:

No you haven't seen me clear this weapon. If I had hurt or killed myself then the video wouldn't be up.
But then some folk call me ornery and contrary, I wonder why?:D

Entirely different issue.

I was not talking about sugar-coating a gun’s problems.

splitten hairs. if you're honest you're honest

And a stitch in time saves nine. Platitudes don't cut it. The guy plays Hickock45 in his Youtube movies. I have no idea who he is off screen. Being "honest" about a problem with somebody else's product isn't difficult, but broadcasting your own screw-up would be a very different matter. If he ever does that, I'll be pleasantly impressed.

PS: Thinking back about this conversation, it’s gone off the track a bit. My point wasn’t about Hickock45 personally at all, although you chose to make it about that. I like what I’ve seen of the guy. But like other folks with a regular YT presence, he still produces a product which he publishes on Youtube, and his videos need to be viewed as such with the necessary scepticism. You see only what he chooses to let you see.

Memory loss is a terrible thing. I don't think you know or care what you say. You just like to argue and spice it with a heavy dose of condescension. No one was talking about editing and fakery until you chimed in. Character glimpse perhaps? ;)
