Just heard this song. "City of New Orleans"

My all time favorite song. I was and still am an early riser. Back when I couldn’t tell time. I’d wake up go to the living room turn on the tv. And the test pattern would be on with no sound. Then after a while they’d play some music. Every morning the first song was Arlo singing City of New Orleans. Then the Star Spangled Banner. A great way to start the day!

The town I grew up in is on the Illinois Central and the City of New Orleans went through every night. I came within a few inches of getting hit by it one night, but that is another story.

Every time I hear the song, I think of playing ball in the city park and hearing the train roar by. It was usually running 90 or above when it went past the West side of my little town.

Seven dollars for a hot dog?
I should have mentioned, the sleeper accomodations included unlimited menu choices in the dining car at meal times. He still talks about the delicious Cajun omelette breakfast special, that was so good he went to the kitchen and thanked the Chef.

A while back I rode from Indianapolis to Chicago, then Chicago to Albquerque.
Just a regular seat. Dont ever do that!
Uncomfortable tedious event.
Felt like I was on a prison train.
Can I appeal my sentence?
No! Your not very appealing.

Great song! Always loved it.

The true hero of this song. No matter who sings it.

"Good morning America, how are you?
Don't you know me? I'm your native son!"

And Hank Snow!

My favorite train song from Hank Snow is The Golden Rocket. Wonderful in the movie Who'll Stop the Rain. I remember first seeing it Summer of 1979 after I had just finished 9th grade in high school. Plenty of great music especially if you are a CCR fan, which I am.

I am another who loves the song City of New Orleans, Guthrie and Nelson versions are favorites but I am partial to the Arlo Guthrie one.

Steve Goodman was my favorite singer to do "The city of New Orleans" after he did it no one could live up to his version in my opinion. Rule3 thank you so much for posting Steve Goodmans version I went up and clicked on him and heard him again I knew he had passed early, again Thanks. Jeff

RIP (too young) Steve Goodman. To watch him sing that iconic song that he wrote is still my favorite. If you Google Steve Goodman songs, you'll be amazed at the songs he wrote and performed in his short life. He was also a great acoustical guitar player, and played with John Prine on several occasions.:)

Oldster I never knew that Steve Goodman wrote the song thats the reason I liked him so well he knew how it should be sung. All the others are good but to me Steve sings it like he meant it to be. Jeff

Growing up in Tuscola IL where the Illinois Central ran North & South, The B&O ran East & West and the Chicago & Eastern Illinois RR (C&EI) blocked the streets.

The City of New Orleans came through everyday between 80 & 90 MPH. Screaming fast and blowing its horn. Every time I hear that song, I think of my home town.

Steve Goodman wrote a number of other wonderful songs including the Cub's fans anthem '''Go Cubs Go''' History: The Story Behind the Chicago Cubs Song | Time
