Is the book called “ Hell I Was There” ? I heard of that one when I read Guns & Ammo magazine. Shooting Times also mentioned that title of Elmer’s. Life .

I switched from phone to I pad . Now I see the title is “ Keith An Autobiography “. Should be very entertaining. Congrats.

Have not looked to see if any of the books I have are autographed. I do have a M1 Carbine that has a cartouche on it that is Elmer Keith's, when his was an inspector when at the Ogden Arsenal. Did he handle the stock? Probably not, but maybe..........

I enjoyed his books a lot. I believe he took a few "liberties" with the truth, but I'm sure a lot of authors do if it helps build the legend and sell books.

I was rereading my copy of his book "Hell, I Was There" yesterday afternoon. This post inspired me to look up his son Ted. Regrettably I found this obituary which had some family information:
Theodore Keith Obituary (1935 - 2019) - Boise, ID - Idaho Statesman

I do have an autographed copy of Elmer's book "Sixguns by Keith". A good friend of mine always said if somebody designed a caliber .50 BMG revolver Elmer Keith would be the first person to buy it.

I have autographed "Sixguns by Keith" and "Safari", the latter of which is rarely mentioned by anyone but an extremely interesting book. He goes into great detail on the big five in Africa and mentions lots of guns used on these hunts.

I'd wager that since it has Elmer's stamp, he personally inspected and stamped it.

Would like to think so.

Here are three quotes from "Hell, I was There!"

"I did the real inspection, checking the barrels, checking the actions, and I did all of the proof firing."

"Enfields, Springfields, M1 rifles, .30 carbines, .45 pistols; all went through the shop."

"I told the officers when I took the job (inspector at Ogden Arsenal) I would not put OG.E.K. in the little rectangular box, my proof mark, on any gun I was not willing to go into combat with myself."

Thanks, I have the book and probably read that and forgot it. Will reread the book.

I grew up reading Elmer's books and still enjoy them to this day. He's perhaps THE all-time greatest outdoor / hunting / shooting gun writers of a bygone era. I learned so much from him over the years. I have all his books except Safari. My copy of his autobiography "Keith" is an autographed copy.

Has anyone read both books, Keith, an Autobiography and Hell, I was There?

I wonder how the two books compare? The synopses — unsurprisingly — sound similar. The former was published in 1974 and the latter in 1979.

One of the charms of Hell I was There is that it is written in Keith's own, ungrammatical, vernacular voice. How about Keith, an Autobiography?

I bet there is an interesting story about why two autobiographies were published only five years apart... Maybe Keith was unhappy about the deal he cut with the publisher in 1974?
