John Wayne movies.
Ok, big John Wayne fan here, forever. Seen most of his movies at least twice. So this afternoon and evening I watched two. Hatari, which I had not seen since i was a kid, and Brannigan that I watched once in my 20s. I thoroughly enjoyed both. Hatari had me laughing out loud at some parts, and Brannigan was Coogan's Bluff in London...good fun both. One thing i liked about the Duke. It was like the adage, "Take your work seriously, but don't take yourself too seriously." Seems John Wayne always put a bit of humor in MOST of his movies. I wish I'd had the chance to shake his hand.

Join the crowd. There are very few JW movies I don't like. The guy had more movie savvy both in front of the camera and behind than almost all of today's hotshot actors.
One of the favorite online exercises amongst John Wayne fans is to list his ten best movies and then cuss and discuss your choices versus someone elses'. In a nice, respectful way of course.
1. The Searchers
2. Red River
3. El Dorado
4. Rio Grande
5. The Quiet Man
6. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
7. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
8. Stagecoach
9. The Undefeated
10. The Sands of Iwo Jima
10a. The War Wagon
Of course, on different days, when I am in different moods, this list could change.

It is an okay list but not having "Rio Bravo" in it puts it at risk. Never was a fan of "The Undefeated" or "The War Wagon" but they were ok IMHO. I would replace them with "Rio Bravo" and "The Comancheros" and I also think "In Harm's Way" deserves a shoutout.

The Shootist and The Cowboys need to be on the top 10... in my not so humble opinion. Oh, and Trie Grit....make it top 13.

In Harm's Way and Wake of the Red Witch top my list.
Trivia question: In how many movies did Wayne's character die?

Also, I would give an honorable mention to Rooster Cogburn. Not an especially great movie, but Wayne always did his best acting across from a strong female lead. Big Jake, McClintock and McQ are all second tier but worth watching over.

Well, Pilgrim, that's a good list and I, too, have seen them all many times as a long-time Wayne appreciator. There are a few on your list that I would drop if we were only listing top ten, and then I would add:
They Were Expendable
Angel and The Badman (rarely seen or even mentioned Western)
Hondo (in 3D!)

I thought I had seen all his movies until I bought the book with every movie.
The Duke made a bunch of B Westerns before Stagecoach.
I also thought I knew all the Hank Williams songs until I got the book.
Hank wrote a bunch of B Movie level songs!

For a large group of men who grew up watching John Wayne, it would be impossible to limit his "Best" to just 10 movies. I love them all and watch any of them I get a chance to watch whenever I can. I have to say that he was truly an idol when I was a kid and tens of millions of people world wide followed his exploits.

Even his mediocre movies are better than most a-list movies made today. Too much is invested in special effects to make up for sub-par acting.

Angel and the badman, great movie, what a great name, Quirt.
The singin sandy stuff early 30s wuz great for a fun watch.
Years ago Franklin mint had a commemorative 45 for his war movies, I paid as much for it as my gold cup.

"Rio Lobo " contains one of my favorite scenes.
Wayne and his party have bivouacked for the night. He wakes up, finds the girl snuggled up next to him.
Wayne: "What are YOU doing here!?"
Girl: "Well you're more comfortable than he is."
Girl gets up, gathers her thing, and leaves.
Wayne: "I've been called a lot of thing before, but COMFORTABLE ?"

Seven screen deaths at least plus he'd already died
at beginning of "The Man Who Shot
Liberty Valance."
Now name the two in which he drowned
inside a diving suit, his air hose being
broken.
And after that name at least three films
in which he sheds tears/cries. The sniffle
in "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" doesn't
count.

So many good scenes come to mind, there's no way I could pick a favorite! The fight scene from "The Quiet Man" came to mind first, though.
Here's a scene from "Laugh-In" that perhaps not everyone has seen. He could be silly with the best of them!

Two things came to mind reading these posts.
One is a movie I remember seeing with pa and ma in the 50´s " The High and the Mighty" .
The other is Donna Reed in " They were expendable" . What a classy and beautiful lady she was !

I believe those are the only two movies Wayne made in which his character died in the film. (Shootist & Cowboys) Anybody think of another one?
I watch him every chance I get, even if I've seen it multiple times.

"The Cowboys", killed by Bruce Dern. My wife has hated Bruce Dern since that movie, ha.
BTW, a fan of all John Wayne movies, "The Cowboys" is probably one of our favorite. And since we live in a small development where all streets are names after John Wayne movies/characters, we kind of like True Grit and Rooster Coburn (and the lady) as we live on Rooster Cogburn Ct.

No one has mentioned one of my favorite John Wayne movie , " Blood Alley " with Lauren Bacall . It was originally supposed to star Robert Mitchum but John Wayne couldn't agree on somethings so he (John Wayne ) said that he play the leading role and behind the camera work as the Director . I'm getting to like old westerns . We have a channel that is all old western shows and movies . I am also partial to the "Duke" movies . I saw one the other night from 1941 , can't remember the name . It was about these moonshiners that lived back in the hills . His dad came back from prison and was trying to find a way to tell the Duke that he was his son . Won't ruin the story , it's worth watching .

I can see that we "might" need to change our approach. John Wayne is credited with 180 acting appearances with roughly 10 of them being spots on TV shows, not movies. So make it 170 movies which he was in.
Perhaps we should list the 10 Worst John Wayne movies?

I am trying to get all of his movies on DVD. It has been taking some time. So far I have 69, guess I better get back on the trail of more of them.

The cowboys
Are my top three.
Actors and movies- they sure don't make them like they used to.

The Duke had a legendary affair with her too. Cost him his first marriage. Supposedly when Dietrich first saw Wayne she asked his agent to "get her that."

I was going to run a poll and see which of his war movies were favorites, In Harms Way, Flying Leathernecks, Sands Of Iwo Jima. or The Longest Day Mine is In Harms Way.
Some of my other favorites are The Quiet Man, The Cowboys, Brannigan, El Dorado, McQ , Donavans Reef, The Shootist, They Were Expendable, Red River and I could go on.

I just ordered "Hellfighters" on blu ray. It's hokey and pretty dumb, but it's fun entertainment.

Every time a John Wayne movie came to the Woodlawn Drive In, my Dad would pack a cooler with Big-K soda and sandwiches and popcorn and take my brother and I to see it. IF I could watch one more movie again with him it might be John Wayne's True Grit.

"Red" Adair was the real life basis for the movie. As with all movies, I am sure the director and writers took poetic license with true events to make it more filmable.
How are things in New Bern? Spent about 20 years off and on in that area.

I spent quite a few night there and at the Twin Drive In accompanied by my friends Schoenling, Weidemann and Hudy.

You don't know how lucky you all are. Mrs. Wdbutcher's Father loved John Wayne and never missed any of his movies. My Wife got so burned out on his movies that we've never watched a John Wayne movie together in the 33 years we've been together. I bet her Father and would have got along great if he would have lived long enough for me to meet him. I have always liked John Wayne movies.
