Best Western Movies - Without John Wayne

Easy, just about any Western without John Wayne is better than one that does include the Duke.

Sacrilege, I know, but I cannot stand John Wayne. He played the same character every movie. They are all very dated and even the ones that came after Leone's revolutionary Dollar's Trilogy reek of yesteryear "golly gee shucks" portrayal of the Old West.

I watched The Searchers because it is on every list of Best Westerns. It is one of the most stilted pieces of garbage I've ever seen. I guess if those were the types of movies one was raised on I can understand having nostalgia for them. But in modern times they are so horribly dated from dialogue, costumes, cinematography techniques (except some of the landscape shots) sound effects, action scenes, etc that they pale in comparison to more modern cinema.

That’s an example where whether it is a Western or not is debatable. same with Quigley Down Under. Regardless, Treasure is one of my favorites. I remember that Nixon once said that it was his favorite movie.

How about No Country For Old Men? I would consider that a western. Here's some more grist for the mill: Hell Or High Water. Another great Jeff Bridges film that is a western, albeit a modern one. I would consider Treasure Of The Sierra Madre to be a western and a great one at that.

Always liked "3:10 to Yuma", but have yet to see the re-make. I'm usually disappointed in remakes. However, most of the Magnificent Seven versions are good in their own way.

Clint had some great movies, .......... but "Paint Your Wagon" wasn't one of them.

The Outlaw Josey Wales
Open Range
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Tombstone
The Magnificent Seven (original)
Once upon a time in the West
Dances With Wolves
Unforgiven
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Jermiah Johnson

My favorite western, noted above by others, is High Noon.

Thought I saw a post by someone who didn't like Clint Eastwood westerns. Can't find that post now, but I'd suggest The Unforgiven. Very different from his early stuff. Excellent western.
