An hour later you're hungry again?

Note the bullet holes in the cockpit door. We kept a red grease pencil to circle the shrapnel/bullet holes for the attention of our maintenance folks. Most were obvious enough not to need the red markings

I was amused that the family name came first (Nguyen), then the given name.

Don't forget Michelin. They grew the rubber trees they hid in.

I had a pair but sold them a few years ago. The straps are made from inner tubes and the sole are...well you know.

Highway 13 (AKA Thunder Road) going up through a Michelin plantation. That's a lot of rubber trees.

Ho sandals are very collectable. I missed a huge opportunity to get any VC or NVA uniforms/ gear about a month before DEROS. 2 ARVN officers came into our area we were closing and said they had any kind of VC/ NVA stuff they would trade for air conditioners or evaporator coolers. We told them “ help yourselves”, we got in our jeeps and headed to MACV annex . Wish had “ traded”. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Reminds me of this: There was cement factory on the civilian side of the wire at Da Nang, It had a tall gantry and I was on guard on the post about 100 yards away also in a tower, I saw a couple of guys hiding in the tower and observing the Flight Line. Called it in and awaited orders, keeping them in my sights the whole time. The Guard Officer came on the line and refuesed permission to fire. He told me that they were sending "Mobile 2-7" to investigate. "Mobile 2-7" was Air Police and that drove a jeep reminiscent of Rat Patrol. They came with lights flashing and of course the two guys di-di'd.

About three hours later we got hit, in the area they had been observing!

Some of our offices had AC or evaporator coolers. As our Group stood down the remaining detachments “ inherited” lots of equipment, vehicles even few nice guns( grease guns , M-60’s and M-2’s).

Now I know where they got the character from Family Guy.

I don't think I ever saw an over weight soldier in Vietnam.

I remember hearing about "Pink Elephants" when I was at Da Nang from the OV-10 Drivers. Seems the elephants were crossing a river and had churned up a bunch of red clay. When the water/clay mixture dried they looked pink. That is my story and I am sticking to it.

What memories, read about the pink elephants. They used whatever they could to move stuff south. Shame SOG units were not given “ free rein” to hinder the trail traffic.

Our aircraft flew the trails almost every night. Usually loaded with 28 500 Lbs bombs. On a good night they would get secondary explosions, meaning the had hit something for sure. Can remeber one crew getting 18 secondaries. A lot of foot and bicycle traffic was taken out too. Our aircrew had a patch for their flight suits that said "Laotian Highway Patrol".

Heard there were “ other devices” that would have ruined their days/ nights. Bombing restrictions in certain areas were just plain stupid.

My one brother was on the carrier Hancock, he said the film on one plane showed the pilot lighting up a fully loaded elephant. The pilot got an elephant on the side of his plane to go with a jet he had shot down

“They” would rather have some of them shot than the water buffaloes. We were told Never hit one with vehicles, wheeled or track , forget what the payout was. We had several contact teams that went to S.F. and other compounds. One guy actually killed a buff with a M-79, IIRC he got article 15.

Didn't have elephants in III/IV CTZ but lots of water buffalo. My last mission was to go up into II CTZ to look for the 1st Cav CG. (He was already dead, flew into a mountain side) The 3 gun ships we had with us were told to rocket any elephants with pack marks on them.

Yea, you didn't shoot the water buffalo. Cost Uncle Sam beaucoup dalla.

Don't get me started on that subject. "The Tunnels of Cu Chi" might be an interesting read. The Cu Chi base camp (home of my Bn HQ) was built on top of a large existing tunnel complex.

Read the book many years ago. Good read.

Bug juice? Most resupply missions I flew were ammo, water and food, in that order. No telling what was snuck in with the good stuff. If you wanted to see the grunt's eyes light up, land with a couple mermite cans of hot chow.

Sometimes after reading these posts, I wonder if my memory is failing me or there are some things I just didn't know. Cu Chi for example....

Cu Chi, Home of the 269th CAB, 25th ID, etc. Top center. Saigon is bottom right. Just come out of the big city, NW on Highway 1. You can't miss it. Excuse the condition of the map. It got carried a lot 53 years ago.

I was south of Saigon, down on the Mekong at a little village Vinh Long. I hadn't heard that there were tunnels under the base at Cu Chi. 7/1 Air Cav. Assigned to 1st Aviation Brigade.

The kid should have been shown how to throw it BEFORE being given a live one. I know we threw dummies before we got close to a live one. Also I remember remember being show the correct way to open the packing container so we could confirm the pin was intact before removing the grenade.
