Default Senior Golden Finds a Home

As some of you know, we lost Sonny, a Corgi mix, about two months ago. It hit me very hard.

We were not looking to adopt but we were not “not looking” either. Last Thursday my wife was contacted by a rescue and told about a Golden bitch heading for the pound. She called the owner and heard about this lazy dog, yuck yack, divorce, dogs gotta go. Deb said we would come over and see the dog.

We get there and this sweet old sugar face is brought out on a leash to meet us. She is overweight and undernourished. Her coat is a mess, her nails are uncut, I could go on and on. Long story short, she came home with us. She got a good brushing that night and seems to relish being fussed over. Deb got down on the floor to brush her and Quinn lay down between her legs. Deb started trimming the fur on her paws and she fell asleep. Slept through her nails being trimmed and even slept while her ears were cleaned. Poor girl has not been to the vet in over a year. Previous owner got her from a puppy mill when the owner died and said the breeder may have done some vetting.

So, Quinn is now part of our family and gets along with Seamus, our 7 year old Golden. She has become Deb’s dog and stays by her constantly.

It is nice having two dogs again!

Kevin

Anyone that takes in an animal in need is a very special person . All of our rescues felt right at home as soon as they stepped in the front door . Sounds like she found heaven on earth .

Thanks!

Love geriatric dogs, last rescue was ten when I got her, she shouldn't outlive me, as she did her prior owner.

To all who have responded.

My wife and I find strays. Our first together dog walked up to us on a job site. Two months later a homeless beagle adopted us at a campground. Couple of years later we are in a PetsMart and someone dumped a 4 week old puppy. Management is busy calling the pound. My wife picks up the puppy and walks out of the store. I tell management to KMA or call the cops. Then my corgi mix, also from an overcrowded kill shelter. Next dogs was from a breeder. They thought it would be a show dog. He wasn’t, but I would not hear of him going to a kill shelter. Which brings us to Quinn. We are not strangers to senior dogs. They come with their own baggage but so do I. And they come willingly. A little attention and they thrive.

Quinn has been with us for 5 days. Previous owner described her as lazy. Each time I leash her we walk to the mailbox and back to the house, 1/4 mile. And she does that 4-5 times a day. Someone was lazy but certainly not Quinn. We will work on getting some weight off her. Tomorrow we will stop at the vet on our way out of town to weigh her. Then Herself and I will come up with a diet to help her lose weight. Nothing drastic but a pound every two or three weeks until she is at 60 or 65 pounds. That itself will help her joints. And proper nourishment and supplements will further help her.

Right now, she is curled up at the side of the bed snoring. I could not be listening to a more beautiful sound.

Kevin

Great news that you rescued that lucky dog! I just got a fostered dog last
month after my little guy passed away New Year’s Eve. We are both pretty happy these days. Willyboy

Sorry to hear of the loss of your last friend, but very happy that you are bringing her into a loving home. It's tough to hear when they are neglected and malnourished, with our shelter cat it was about three weeks until his fur was shiny, full and new vibrant colors became apparent. Pets are innocents and I am thankful for good people like you that are making a positive impact locally. There's a lot of love in those photos.

Strawhat, I had a rough day today...as a matter of fact the last 4 days were frustrating. I came in from working outside today and took a shower which helped some but I pulled out the old laptop and came in here to see what's going on. I haven't had much time for playin' on the computer lately.

I logged in and read your post and saw the pics and I instantly felt better.
Your story put a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat. Heaven holds a special pace for you and your wife.

What a wonderful way to end a 4-day run of hard work and frustration.
Thanks for the feel-good story. You have no idea how badly I needed that and how it lifted my spirits.

Just this morning I finally got the courage to urn my Daisy and I have 4 lockets for the wife & girls that got a pinch of her ashes I sealed in them. We had to put her down Dec. 7th. I still walk into the house or living room expecting to see what she's into! I had tears running down my face the whole time I did that this morning, almost 4 months later. That Weimaraner was just the best dog that ever owned me. God, she could read my mind I think! I'm glad you rescued that Golden girl...that face!!!
Peace...Jeff T.
(Dang it all! More tears!)

As it happens, we four are in NE Illinois until 10 April so it won’t be as much as a walk!

You are welcome anytime!

Thanks for the invite, but she seems to think that as long as I cook dinner I'm still a keeper. She quit cooking a year ago and my biggest problem is menus and getting it on the table when she is ready to eat not so much the cooking. Again thanks for the invite may take you up on it when I go to NY in the fall. In and out not overnight.

Default An Update

We are back from Chicago and Quinn finally got to meet her Veterinarian. Lots of tail wagging (something new for her!) and she was very good about all the poking and prodding. Best guess among the vets is 10-12 years old. Heart, lungs, eyes, are all clear so health is good. Weight… well the old girl has already lost some weight but tipped the scale at an even 100 pounds! Breed standard for bitches is 55-65 and we prefer our dogs to be on the light side, so, Quinn will be on a diet whether she knows it or not.

Last evening we had my Brother and his dogs over for supper and a get together. Quinn and Seamus had a riot. His Chesapeake bitch and Seamus chased each other around the house and rumbled. Quinn stood by growling and barking as if to say “NOT IN THE HOUSE”. He also brought with him a cousin’s Spinone. They all interacted well.

Quinn has been with us about 3 1/2 weeks and fits right in. I built a ramp for her to get in the house and she seems to appreciate it although once in a while she will use the steps as if to say “I can still do steps!” She is more active and definitely more vocal with a variety of growls and a very deep pitched bark.

We are pleased she chosen us.

Default Reverse on a Ramp

Bama, a friend's Golden, usually walked backwards up his ramp.

My best guess is that he may have slid backwards at some time while walking forward.
By walking backwards, any slipping would be in the direction he was facing.

IIRC ramp was just painted wood.
Nothing special for traction.

Quinn has decided she likes being in the backyard! She trots down the ramp and proceeds to do the “Stop, Drop and Roll” maneuver! I tried to add a video of her break dancing but it did not attach.

Default Update on Quinn

Had the old girl back to the vet, she lost 1.8 pounds in 3 weeks. She has not noticed the diet but it seems to be working! She is coming more and more out of her shell, more vocal, more playful, stealing toys from Seamus and definitely wants to be petted and fussed over more. It is wonderful to see her transformation.

Default Update.

Well, Quinn had some bad teeth and they were effecting her life. We had blood work done and her heart checked out. Everything came back better than normal so we agreed to put the old gal under and have her teeth worked on. We expected a good cleaning and a couple of extractions. Got the cleaning. And EIGHT extractions! No wonder she wasn’t excited about chewing or playing with toys.

She came through the procedure fine and has been home three days. Her tail is wagging more and she holds it up higher than before. We have her on a rehydrated food. We keep some dehydrated food in a bug out bag in case of emergency. Just added water to it for a softer food for Quinn. Normally we feed raw food but with all those incisions, did not want to introduce even a chance of infection into her jaws.

And, she has lost almost 10 pounds! 44 more to go!

Right now we just came in from an evening on the deck. Quinn is sound asleep behind our chairs and snoring like a freight train. Such a beautiful sound!

Not sure if this was mentioned. I built a ramp from the deck to the yard and we have a ramp to help her into the vehicle. She using the deck ramp about 1/4 of the time. Uses the steps most of the time as if to say “haha, I have lost weight and can use the steps just fine!” She used the ramp to the vehicle exactly once, phooey! I just climb up!

She certainly has adapted well to her new home. And to traveling. We travel four times a year for business and more to see the grandkids. In the four months since Quinn adopted us, she has been on two trips to Chicago (16 days each) and a trip to Atlanta (14 days). Quite the trooper.

We certainly have been blessed by her presence.

That is another fine update about Quinn, and always a great thing for us unworthy humans to do what we can to make life better for our hairy best buddies. Very pleased to hear how she is adapting to her own family and home.

Default Update!

Quinn has been with us nearly 6 months. We just received a scale appropriate for canines and she has lost about 25 pounds! We did not get her weighed for almost a week after she adopted us but she was over 105 pounds. Today she is a beautiful 90.2 pounds. I wish I had lost as much!

She is doing great. Walks to the mail box daily, 1/4 mile round trip, and taking out the trash once a week. Chasing Seamus, the 7 year old house mate, daily!

I am very happy she decided to make us part of her family!

Default An Update

Quinn has been with us over eight months. She has lost more weight and had some health issues resolved. Her previous keepers never took her to a Veterinarian so there were some problems. Massive ear infections which were dealt with antibiotics and weekly ear drops for keeping them clear and clean. The poor girl had some rotten teeth so eight were extracted! That improved things a lot! She now runs nearly everywhere she goes! We found out she was intact when she went into heat in July. I am not big for spaying or neutering without just cause so we decided to keep her intact. Well, if you want to hear God laugh, make plans! We had a quarterly business trip scheduled to Chicago in October. Maybe 12 days before we leave I am rubbing Quinn’s belly and see some discharge. Herself looks and calls the vet. Our vet knows we do not panic and bring the dogs in “just because” so she gets us in the next day. They swab the old girl and run a quick check under a microscope. Turns out Quinn has Pyometra. We caught it early as if left untreated, it is a killer. Drugs will work but the best cure is a spay. Two choices, do an emergency spay that day or wait ti get her on the schedule 8-10 days later. We opted for the emergency spay. Not ideal but I was not going to Chicago and leaving her in the hospital while we were gone. Did that in January with Sonny. That is the reason we have Quinn. Not going through that again if I can help it.

With the health issues corrected, Quinn is much more active and even climbs up on things. Her she is in one of her favorite places,

Kevin
