Best Western Movies - Without John Wayne
Anyone can come up with a top ten list if they include John Wayne. It's a bit more of a challenged if you don't include any of his movies in the list. I'll start.
The Big Country
Once Upon A Time in the West
Westward the Women
The Gunfighter
Winchester '73 (The original)
Cowboy
Bend of the River
My Darling Clementine
The Westerner
The Virginian (The Original 1929 Gary Cooper)

"Paint Your Wagon"
Lee Marvin &, of course, Clint
Before there was Val Kilmer in "Tombstone" Stacy Keach played "Doc" in 1971.

Not a challenge at all: Last Train From Gun Hill.
John Wayne and Clint Eastwood (to a much lesser extent) were in some good westerns, but I can only recall perhaps one or two of the very best that John Wayne was in and can't think of any that Clint Eastwood acted in.
These threads are incredibly subjective; few have the same film tastes.

Haha, any of them!
But, Shane of course. Best western movie ever made.
The original Magnificent Seven was called The Seven Samurai. Great movie!

It's hard to ignore The Searchers. I think it might be the best western ever made. But we are taking John Wayne out of the mix so we can't count it. I'm going to cheat and say the Coen brothers version of True Grit. Jeff Bridges was great in this move. Like everyone else I go back and forth but I think that's my favorite right now. Close behind is The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward John Ford. The cinematography and music really give it a moodiness. These are relatively new movies and both seem to have paid a lot of attention to period realism. There is noting more distracting than watching a move that was supposed to take place in the 1870's with everyone carrying 1892 Winchesters.

All good ones have been mentioned, but I sort of liked that one film that was made, down in "Ausi" land.
He was plumb handy at shooting big holes in far away buckets.

That’s an example where whether it is a Western or not is debatable. same with Quigley Down Under. Regardless, Treasure is one of my favorites. I remember that Nixon once said that it was his favorite movie.

Most of the great ones are mentioned, but I really liked the Randolph Scott/Budd Boetticher films. Great tension in them. Also, Ulzana's Raid, one of the best indian war films.

Easy, just about any Western without John Wayne is better than one that does include the Duke.
Sacrilege, I know, but I cannot stand John Wayne. He played the same character every movie. They are all very dated and even the ones that came after Leone's revolutionary Dollar's Trilogy reek of yesteryear "golly gee shucks" portrayal of the Old West.
I watched The Searchers because it is on every list of Best Westerns. It is one of the most stilted pieces of garbage I've ever seen. I guess if those were the types of movies one was raised on I can understand having nostalgia for them. But in modern times they are so horribly dated from dialogue, costumes, cinematography techniques (except some of the landscape shots) sound effects, action scenes, etc that they pale in comparison to more modern cinema.

How about No Country For Old Men? I would consider that a western. Here's some more grist for the mill: Hell Or High Water. Another great Jeff Bridges film that is a western, albeit a modern one. I would consider Treasure Of The Sierra Madre to be a western and a great one at that.

Always liked "3:10 to Yuma", but have yet to see the re-make. I'm usually disappointed in remakes. However, most of the Magnificent Seven versions are good in their own way.
Clint had some great movies, .......... but "Paint Your Wagon" wasn't one of them.

Rusty1953 mentioned Broken Trail. I had forgotten about that one but yes, absolutely a great movie (although a tv movie). Rober Duvall does an exceptional job playing that type of ornery but honorable cowboy. Same as in Open Range. One of my favorite all time actors.

My favorite western, noted above by others, is High Noon.
Thought I saw a post by someone who didn't like Clint Eastwood westerns. Can't find that post now, but I'd suggest The Unforgiven. Very different from his early stuff. Excellent western.

Every time I revisit this thread I see more that I like and forgot about. The Culpepper Cattle Company is a great movie. Another great one that Billy Green Bush was in is Tom Horn. The Wild Bunch and The Professionals have to be on everyone's short list. These are movies that no matter how many times you see them, you will still take a couple of hours of your time and watch them again.

Won't mention any films specifically
but Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin,
Kevin Costner, Gary Cooper, James
Stewart, Randolph Scott. Glenn Ford,
William Holden, Gregory Peck
and Henry Fonda each made
several notable and excellent Westerns.
And yes, I left out Clint Eastwood.

A little odd. But good…
The, good, the bad, and the weird
It makes several on line lists…
