Default Damn Good Western: Broken Trail

Had not seen it in a long while. Even better than I remembered. Not Lonesome Dove, but in, I’d say, the same class.

On Amazon Prime now.

Broken Trail is one of my favorite shows. Robert Duvall is a class act.

Duvall, of course, is great. Truly.

(Lemme put a paragraph here, 'cause he deserves it. Outstanding)

The guy who plays his nephew, lemme look 'em up... Hayden Church, is really good. He is the archetypical "strong silent type," as we said in my youth, the kinda fella we all grew up admiring.

And his, the nephew's, love interest..... Well, dang it, I'll look that up, too, out of respect for acting ability... Okay, Gwendoline Yeo, the actress, in the movie "#3."

I thought she was terrific. Especially the last scene. Very moving and well done.

Do yourself a favor and watch the flick.

I had wanted to see it again for several years now but it wasn't available for free. A buddy was visiting last month which made the rental worthwhile. The enjoyment of watching it with a friend who loves westerns but had never seen it was a plus. All the actors were excellent ! Hayden Church was perfection in his role. It was originally a made for TV two parter. Lonesome Dove, Open Range, and Broken trail -- Duvall's best for me !

I own it. A great flick that was a mini series. Robert Duvall plays that type of character really well (as seen in Lonesome Dove and Open Range).

I liked, among many scenes I liked in the movie, how, at the showdown, the nephew, actor Hayden Church, knowing the moment is desperate, pauses for a beat or two, collects himself, breathes deeply, conquers his fears, and steps out resolutely with his rifle. Very well done.

Not the typical Hollywood shoot 'em up, bang bang bang.

(The bad guy, actor Chris Mulkey — looked him up, too, out of respect for his acting — was excellent, too. Extremely creepy.)

Great movie!

One of the few movies I've ever seen that I was completely glued to the screen. That ending...I mean...WOW!

Got to me.

Masterpiece.

One of my all-time favorite lines from any movie.

He has an 1866 Winchester with no front sight or barrel band. What's that about?

That's how it was written in the book. Kudos to the filmmakers for accuracy to the source material!

I didn't read the book. Why didn't he use a front sight?

Onomea - based on your recommendation, I watched “Broken Trails” last night. I must say you were spot on —- this is one fine, watchable and totally enjoyable movie. Rare for Hollywood. A really good western movie. And what good writing:
"We're all travelers in this world - from sweet grass to the packin' house - birth till death - we travel between the eternities."
It will be added to my list of movies to watch again. Thanks.
