Anyone Else eat pork and cabbage on New Years Day
when i was young and still lived with my parents it was Sauer Kraut and Pork rib or Pork Roast. Cooked together i still enjoy that meal on occasion.
This year for New years pork and cabbage meal it will be pork egg roll cup made with Sausage, Cabbage and Ramen noodles.

For us it's always a pork loin or roast, cabbage, black eyed peas with tomato and pepper relish; it's Southern tradition on New Years Day.

70 years and counting
Pork tenderloin
"Polish style" Kraut [caraway seeds]
Mounds of mashed potatoes
IIRC Kraut is a good source of vitamin C ; the tradition is to bring good luck; that you don't get scurvy before spring!

Actually the reason we on the bayou eat smothered cabbage and black eyes over rice for New Years is because after spending all our money over Christmas, we be's too poor to afford anything else. And the "pork" is just seasoning salt meat for the beans and cabbage.
Noooooooooobody knows the trouble I've seen................

Black eyed peas, collard greens-or turnip or mustard greens, and cornbread. Big old hunk of hog in the peas and greens of course.

Quite honestly, I have never heard of that tradition. Usually if we have a NYE party, there are PLENTY of leftover's for dinner. Sometimes we even invite a select few from our usual NYE party back again to finish them. Sometimes we go to one of their homes and bring the food with us.
PORK & CABBAGE is a new one on NYD for me.......

Hog Jowl / Black Eyed Peas / Cabbage / Collared Greens
Traditional Menu Explanations
Hog Jowl
On New Year’s Day, hog jowls are traditionally eaten in the south to ensure health, prosperity and progress.
Black Eyed Peas
Typically, the belief that black-eyed peas are a lucky New Year’s meal is especially popular in the south,
Cabbage / Collared Greens
Cabbage and collard greens both represent “green” money in New Year’s tradition
Bekeart and SWMBO will have:
#1) Hog Jowl and Black Eyed Peas seasoned with onion.
May use some Green Onions - Another chance at Money
#2) Fresh Pork (Ribs or Chops) simmered with kraut
Thinking about adding a Green apple ...
#3) Start Another Good Year Together!

A big old baking dish wiped with bacon grease and filled with sauerkraut, sliced onions, green apples, garlic, and a dash of molasses plus lots of black pepper. Cover it with smoked sausage, pork steaks, and pork ribs. It takes a really big glass baking dish or a large roasting pan. A cup or two of white wine and some whole cloves Frenches it up a bit

In our case, it is usually pork sausage, cole slaw, and blackeye peas cooked with a new penny (to bring prosperity in the coming year). Have always done that. Sometimes, the sausage is replaced by ham. As long as it is something pork. Wife does not like pork chops so we never have them.

We enjoy SK with pork for meals,
be it chops, sausage, roast or what ever.
Don't knock it until you have tried it.
Some even like the "Red" SK as a little different, spin.

No, I eat donuts on New Year’s Day while watching the parade. Childhood tradition. I only eat cabbage if I need to keep the mosquitoes away.

Pork and Sauerkraut with dumplings every New Years day.
We just got back from the farmers market with treats for New Years eve. 4 dozen Chesapeake Bay oysters, 4 pounds of large shrimp, a pound and a half of sea scallops. Gotta get some bacon to wrap the scallops and we should be good to go.

When I was a young lad growing up in Texas every new years eve we would bury a dime then dig it up the next day for prosperity in the coming year. Then eat back eyed peas for lunch. My Uncle grew black eyed peas so we had the peas my Aunt canned that summer. Good eating!

The German heritage runs deep throughout Ohio. Pork ribs and kraut were/are a common occurrence in these parts not just for New Year's Day but year round. Good stuff.
Distinct bouquet, fer shore.

Pork is fine. Cabbage is for rabbits. Cooking it makes it worse.

That's the exact new years day meal I've had every New Years Day for as far back as I can remember. With the addition of some good ole cornbread to wash it all down.
Look'n forward to it already!

Speaking of cornbread, my dad and Ruthie's dad both loved to crumble cornbread in a glass of buttermilk and have it for dessert. They loved it.
I have tried many times to like it but have given up. Our palates are all wired differently.

Will be having Ham and Beans.
Cornbread and Buttermilk?
Haven’t had any for a mighty long time.
Same for peanuts in a RC Cola.
And I love all Beans and Peas.
Favorite Pea is the Purple Hull.
I can sometime get them canned or frozen.

Have never tried pork and cabbage, so ain't gonna knock it. When you're named after your great grandfather who was raised by the River Brethren in Lancaster County, you eat what i call Pa Dutch style pork and kraut.

Many times I have been to the sauerkraut festival in Waynesville, Ohio.
Wall to wall beer booths and all things sauerkraut including pastries and ice cream.
Major league good times.

I can verify Rusty's commentary on Ohio. My wife's dad always cooked a crockpot of pork and kraut for NY day.
We sat and ate the pork / kraut while drinking copious amounts of Busch beer. The combination made for an interesting next day.

Sauerkraut with a pork roast, kielbasa, link sausage and a few hot dogs thrown in cooked low and slow, and a pile of mashed potatoes.
Good eating!

I'm the only one in my family that will eat it; so I have it once every year or two. It was a comfort food we'd have at home when I was growing up. Mom did not like it, couldn't stand it, but Dad grew up on it.
It's really simple to make. We'd use a stock pot on the stove and just alternate layers of cabbage, sliced, seasoned with black pepper and a bit of salt,.... then pork sausage (hamburger consistency) that we'd flatten into a small burger-size shape, season again...then start over with the next layer of cabbage and continue to alternate.....all the fats would cook out of the pork sausage--cascade down--and then season the cabbage.
Usually, make fresh biscuits on the side, buttered, and that was it, maybe cooked potatoes on the side once in a while.
Other way we had it was thick pork chops in slow cooker, covered in sauerkraut. That smell also brings back some good memories...

My aunt who lives here in town used to make this too. Unfortunately she is very disabled and unable to cook anymore. So I'll go to the Fire Company south of Gettysburg that is having a pork and sauerkraut lunch on New Year's Day.
But there is one more thing to remember. My late father used to say, "Don't eat chicken on New Year's or you'll be scratching for a living all year."

Hoppin' Johns here....
...except I can't eat black eyed peas, so a substitute bean will have to do. I like field peas and rice.

Pork roast, black eye peas, and a green of some sort but it won't be collards. I cannot take those things. Maybe some real cornbread no sugar.

Heck yeah 👍
Having German/Hungarian mother it was always a New Years staple served with mashed potatoes.
Don’t recall what all mom put it the pot besides sauerkraut & usually a pork shoulder but it was good 😊
Once I left the house and assumed the duties of preparing I use the bagged sauerkraut and rinse it well and squeeze out the best I can the water. Using the crockpot I layer the kraut with plenty of died yellow onions. Place a small pork shoulder (bone in) in and continue to layer around it kraut & onions. Once completed I top off with some bay leaf’s and a can of diced tomatoes. Put it on low and cook a good 10-12 hours.
I might just put it on later today as that stuff always tastes better the next day 👍👍
Wishing everyone a Happy & healthy New Year!!

Pork on New Year's because pigs root ahead.
Never fowl because chickens scratch backwards.
Black-eyed peas for good luck.
Jus' sayin'.

Greens for money, cornbread for gold.
Seem to recall a certain # of cowpeas need to be eaten but can't find a reference.
