I'd never watched Patton until last night. I couldn't get into it at all. Maybe I was expecting too much considering..."Patton won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Although Scott won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role, he declined the award."
I did enjoy Ken Burns work in great multitudes.

Just kidding. Probably the worst war movie ever.

How about a couple films with Jimmy Cagney: Mister Roberts and Gallant Hours (where he plays VADM William “Bull” Halsey.
Since the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings is approaching, The Longest Day would be at the top of my list.

Some that may not have been listed yet worth watching...
Objective, Burma with Errol Flynn. A superior film of the era...no false heroics and a good story and well acted.
Detination Tokyo with Cary Grant.
Breakthrough with John Agar.
Desperate Journey with Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan. A bit over the top but enjoyable.
Destroyer with Glenn Ford and Edward G. Robinson. Hard to find but worth it.
Crash Dive with Tyrone Power.
Imitation General with Glenn Ford.
No Man is an Island with Jeffrey Hunter
Merrill's Marauders with Jeff Chandler.
The Hunters with Robert Mitchum.
Torpedo Run with Glenn Ford and Ernest Borgnine.
Operation Pacific with John Wayne.
Back to Bataan with John Wayne.
The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum.
Command Decision with Clark Gable.
Task Force with Gary Cooper.
Run Silent, Run Deep with Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.
Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo with Van Johnson.

Although the portrayal of the U-Boat Wolfpack was a little cartoonish, I did enjoy watching Greyhound with Tom Hanks as a USN Destroyer Captain trying to protect a convoy crossing the mid Atlantic where air cover was not possible.

“We Were Soldiers” is the best war movie ever, bar none. The first major battle of Vietnam
at Ia Drang.
Pretty much everything but the ending was true to the book.
Great performance by Sam Elliot as the humorless battalion Sargent Major.

I lost my respect for “Patton” (the movie, not the general) after seeing newsreels of Patton himself speaking.
He actually had a high, somewhat squeaky voice. IMO, he was nothing like Scott’s thoughtful, emotive portrayal, but a man who matter-of-factly said spoke his mind and didn’t care what anyone thought.

I just finished watching a movie called The Greatest Beer Run Ever.
It was more war than not. I really enjoyed it.

Stayed up late last week watching Longest Day, front to back.
Was ok if you get past the obvious 'stars' playing the all of the characters.
I was waiting for John Wayne to say, "OK Pilgrim".
However, he did say, "move 'em out" though.

Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee - he is a good actor, but there is just sumptin' 'bout him in this movie that just doesn't feel right.

Robert Duvall was a much better Lee in Gods and Generals. The fact that Duvall is actually related to Marsh Robert might have something to do with it.

It was also used as a study in command by several federal agencies back in the 70’s and 80’s.

Let's not forget the Navy. "Run silent, run deep" was well done. Good acting by Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable. I watched it last night for the first time.

The Great Raid, 2005
The Steel Claw, 1961.
Video of me walking without paying attention, thru a small
anti-war protest, as I was about to enter the Hearst Gym, for the '68 Smallbore Western Nationals.
Fruits and vegetables launched by puny punks.
Rescued by a lovely blonde flower girl.
Received the USAF medal for
"lack of attention to surroundings".

I normally can't get through subtitled foreign films. The orginial Swedish edition of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is likely the last one I'd enjoyed.
So, I can heartily recommend this one as another exception. It's the true story of a man who fought under 3 flags during the war. Here's an article, if you'd like:
https://nationalpost.com/news/world/...sides-of-a-war
Here's the IMDB background page...
My Way (2011) - IMDb
Here is a free link. At the bottom right of the screen you will see a box to display the closed-captioning. English-4 seemed to work fine.

Close Quarters 1943
Just today I happened upon another British navy WW2 film. From what I have gathered, all of officers and crew are the real thing.
I have to say the film is quite entertaining, I'll leave it up to you for your thoughts.
