I have been on a kick to watch war movies, and have watched many of the old ones. Anybody got suggestions? Chances are I have seen it recently, but maybe there will be some suggestions I missed. Tis the weekend for this you know

Lesser known and low budget but good:
"Attack". Jack Palance, Eddie Albert, Lee Marvin
"A Midnight Clear". Ethan Hawke, Gary Sinise
"Steel Helmet" Gene Evans
Major budget offering:
"The Young Lions" Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, Montgomery Clift, Maximilian Schell

I remember The Guns of Navarone from when I was a kid, one of my favorites. Does that even make the re-run list anymore? Gregory Peck (?) I think...

For me, the British have several good ones, I have watched The Way Ahead staring David Niven among others many times. Perhaps you might find it enjoyable.

My favorite war movie, hands down is Patton. No question. I do have a soft spot for Fury, since my uncle was in the Second Armored. He was a combat infantryman and I like to think one of those guys trapped in the field might have been him. For other wars I like Glory, The Patriot and We Were Soldiers. Also, Ken Burns's excellent documentaries are worth revisiting.

war movie
Twelve O'Clock High
The movie was described by heavy bomber crews that saw action in WW2 that the movie was the most accurate to true war experience.

“ The story of G.I. Joe” is perhaps the flat out best WWII movie. Filmed in 44-45 with real combat troops, check it out.

Good topic for Memorial Day weekend.
My favorite war film of all time (and favorite film of any type), is The Best Years of Our Lives.
It was the highest grossing film of the 1940s and took all the academy awards from another monster film of 1946: It's a Wonderful Life, including best picture that year.
It's rated the number 37 film of all time on the AFI 100 list. It's an example of moviemaking at its highest art form, anywhere in history.
Three other must-sees: Mrs. Miniver (1942 best pic), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957 best pic), and 12 O'Clock High.
I also love The Sands of Iwo Jima.
That should keep you busy.

I think “Merrill’s Marauders” is a worthy watch. 1962 with Jeff Chandler, Claude Akins, and other familiar faces. WWII in Burma.

In college one of my military history courses used this film for us to discuss leadership and command. During R&R from Vietnam I actually ran into and talked with Robert Lansing (TV's General Savage) while in Don Ho's place.

I just watched "Hacksaw Ridge" for the first time last week, and I really liked it. Based on a true story about an unlikely hero emerging during the Battle of Okinawa. It's got a lot of realistic looking battle ground scenes, some a bit gory and heart wrenching to watch. But a great story!
I don't know how I missed this one before.

I just paid some money -which I almost never do- to re-watch my favorite WWII movie. The Longest Day.
More recent ones that I really like -
Saving Private Ryan
Band of Brothers
I hate low-budget war movies when the arms that they portray are not period correct. I couldn't watch one that purported to be a WWI flick that showed the main character shooting an M1903A4 sniper rifle. "Hey boy, run out and find me a scoped rifle so I can use it in the movie!"

As an ex-pat I watched The Battle of Britain again today. I really noticed how well the ending was done. No big speeches, no cheering crowds or backslapping people in uniform, and no sloppy reuniting of a flyer and his girl. Nope, we just had a taciturn Hugh Dowding walking out onto the terrace of RAF Bentley Priory, realizing he can here no aircraft and see no contrails in the sky. The ending perfectly captured the reality of the moment. There were still five more years of war to run, and the victory could only really be determined by analysis as time went on. Yes, they did put Churchill's "Never in the field of human conflict..." speech was overlaid on the final sky scene, but without voice over.

There are some good war movies not made 40+ years ago.
We Were Soldiers
Hacksaw Ridge
Black Hawk Down
The Hurt Locker
American Sniper
Inglourious Basterds that's the way they spelled it.
Devotion
Just a few.

Other than some old WWII in Color programs on History Channel and Band of Brothers on AMC, I found nothing in the way of "war" movies on TV. I am about BoB'd out due to the frequency it is shown, as well as Saving Private Ryan. I utilized YouTube to get my overdose of war movies, including one very surprising one called Man in the Middle starring Robert Mitchum. It was sort of the Army version of The Caine Mutiny. Great cast.

Who the heck would want to watch modern Hollywood, though?
